Abstract

Background: Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is an infectious disease transmitted through the Aedes spp. mosquitoes. Based on data from Manado City’s Health Department, the Mapanget District is one of the areas with a relatively high number of DHF cases in Manado City. The Mapanget Barat Village is part of the Mapanget District and also contributes to DHF cases every year. Therefore, the vector's data of larval density is needed as an effort to prevent transmission of the dengue virus. Aim: determine the larval density of Aedes spp. mosquito in Mapanget Barat Village, Manado City. Methods: This study is a descriptive research with a cross-sectional method. Research sample consists of larvae collected from 100 households in Mapanget Barat Village. The data analysis is conducted by calculating the House Index (HI), Container Index (CI), Breteau Index (BI), and Larvae Free Index (LFI). Result: Based on survey of 100 houses, HI value of 24% was obtained. The percentage of larvae in the TPA breeding places is 65.62%, and in non-TPA breeding places is 34.38%. The types of containers that found positive for larvae were buckets for 10.93%, bathtubs for 7.14%, drums for 8.48%, followed by used buckets at 14.29%, and flower pots at 8.33%. The identification results indicate that all larva samples belong to the Aedes aegypti species. Results of the CI calculation are 8.91%, the BI is 32%, and the LFI is 76%. Conclusion: The larval density of Aedes spp. mosquito in Mapanget Barat Village is on the moderate level, categorizing it as an area with moderate risk for the spread of DHF. Abstract

Malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in many countries. A definitive diagnosis of malaria can be made through microscopic examination or Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs). Both microscopic examination and RDT have their own characteristics, advantages, and limitations. This study aims to describe the methods of malaria diagnosis at community health centers in Bitung City. A descriptive research design with a cross-sectional approach was used in this study. Data were obtained through interviews with nine health workers, including laboratory assistants and malaria program coordinators, from nine community health centers in Bitung City. The results showed that microscopic examination was available in only five community health centers. These centers confirmed RDT results and identified Plasmodium species through microscopic examination. In the primary health centers where only RDT was available, three referred patients to more equipped facilities, and one made a diagnosis using only RDT. The conclusion of this study is that RDT is available in all community health centers, whereas microscopic examination is available in only five community health centers due to limited diagnostic tools and human resources.

Abstract

Introduction: Malaria is an infectious disease caused by the Plasmodium genus of parasites. Plasmodium vivax is currently the most reported type of Plasmodium in Indonesia, accounting for 47.9% of cases. To reduce the incidence of malaria cases, a rapid, efficient, and affordable diagnostic method is needed, such as the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT). Objective: This study conducted laboratory tests on the RDT to evaluate its sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing malaria compared to the microscopic method, which is considered the gold standard. Method: This research employed an analytical study design using a cross-sectional approach. The data collected were processed and organized into contingency tables, calculating sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value. Result and Discussion: The sensitivity of the RDT was found to be 92.59%, with a specificity of 100%. The positive predictive value was 100%, while the negative predictive value was 66.66%. Conclusion: This study concludes that the RDT diagnostic method is both sensitive and specific in detecting Plasmodium vivax when compared to the microscopic method as the gold standard.

Abstract

Abstract: In North Sulawesi, malaria remains as a significant health issue, indicated by the high number of clinical cases and positive results in several areas. Bitung City is an area with sandy soil and is directly adjacent to the coastline, with a high population density. Residing in a malaria-endemic area makes the population of Bitung City vulnerable to malaria, especially teenager who are in the explorative age group. This study aimed to determine the profile of malaria among teenagers in Bitung City during the period of July to November 2023. This was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach. The data obtained were organized in the form of frequency distribution tables, and discussed according to malaria agents and the respondents’ gender. The results showed that there were more male respondents than females (59%:41%). The most frequent type of malaria agent was Plasmodium vivax (49%), and less in Plasmodium falciparum (6%); none in Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae (0%). In conclusion, the dominant malaria parasite species among teenagers in Bitung was Plasmodium vivax. There are more male teenagers suffering from malaria than female teenagers. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Malaria is an infectious disease caused by the Plasmodium parasite, transmitted through the bite of Anopheles mosquitoes, with high incidence in tropical and subtropical regions. Malaria control relies on early diagnosis using methods such as microscopy test or rapid diagnostic test (RDT), which are effective for rapid detection, especially in areas with limited access to healthcare services. This study aimed to compare the sensitivity and specificity of microscopy test with Histidine-Rich Protein II-based RDT in blood samples of fever patients. This was an analytical observational study with a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The data obtained were then processed, organized in a 2x2 table format, and analyzed using the McNemar test. The results showed that the RDT had an effectiveness comparable to the microscopic method as the gold standard in detecting Plasmodium falciparum infection, with high sensitivity and specificity, making RDT a viable diagnostic alternative for malaria patients. In conclusion, the rapid diagnostic test (RDT) method demonstrates good effectiveness and speed in detecting Plasmodium falciparum infection, as well as sufficient accuracy comparable to microscopic examination.
