Abstract

This study aims to explore the acquisition of English morphemes which is the second language used by children through their interaction in online games. English morphemes, which have different structures from Indonesian morphemes, are analyzed based on their types, especially on root, affixation, stem and base. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. The research sample consists of children aged 7 to 12 years old who have experience playing online games. Observations were made to identify the use of relevant English morphemes. The results show that children can understand and use roots both as content words and function words. However, not all lexical morphemes are found in children's speech, nor are bound roots as part of morphemes. The types of affixes used by children in playing online games are affixes at the beginning and end. There is no use of infixes. Root, stem and base which are word building elements have been used by children in the context of online games.

Abstract

This study explores how language in the psychological thriller Get Out (2017), directed by Jordan Peele, conveys racism through polite yet indirect utterances. Although the white characters appear friendly, their language subtly reinforces racial stereotypes. Drawing on Grice’s theory of implicature (1975) and Searle’s speech act theory (1969), this research examines how pragmatic features reveal underlying racial bias. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study analyzes 17 selected dialogues between the protagonist, Chris, and white characters during his visit to his girlfriend’s family. The findings show that implicatures conceal power imbalances and racial discomfort, while indirect speech acts mask prejudice beneath seemingly supportive comments. These results suggest that film serves not only to entertain but also to reflect and reinforces social issues like racism. Addressing a gap where pragmatic analysis is underused in film dialogue, this study demonstrates how everyday language can conceal power and bias in seemingly ordinary interactions. Abstract

Research on “Denotative and Connotative Meanings in The Hundred-Foot Journey Movie (Semantic Study)” aims to identify references and meanings, with a focus on denotative and connotative meanings. The objective of the research is to understand the constructed meanings of cultural differences using Geoffrey Leech's theory (1981) in a semantic study approach. Conversational sentence data was taken from the film The Hundred-Foot Journey. The descriptive-qualitative method consists of the production of texts from verbal sources, text analysis, and interpretation to analyze data in discourse analysis. The findings show that meaning in speech is not limited to simple denotative meanings, but often develops into connotative meanings that are rich in cultural, emotional, and social power relations. The denotative and connotative meanings identified provide an understanding of each object or concept, resulting in an awareness of cultural differences in the communication process, especially in the dynamic interpretation of language Keywords: Denotation, Connotation, Culture, Film
