Abstract

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study is to explore university students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of recognizing Japanese Kanji characters by using mnemonic strategies and of understanding Kanji’s meanings. Fifty Indonesian university students majoring in Japanese Language Education participated in this study. Data were collected through an online questionnaire survey and an in-depth interview with Japanese as a foreign language (JFL) students. Drawing on the analysis of questionnaire and interview data, students reported that the use of mnemonic strategies successfully enhanced their comprehension of Japanese Kanji characters lexically and semantically. The findings also showed that the mnemonic strategy was so applicable that students could recognize Japanese Kanji characters. The use of technology also mediated the adoption of the mnemonic strategy. Thus, the implication of the study is that by using different mnemonic strategies along with the use of technology, Japanese teachers could teach Japanese Kanji characters to students whose writing systems background is other than Latin/Roman alphabet systems.

Abstract

Games berpotensi sebagai salah satu metode yang bermafaat dalam mengajar kemampuan berbicara, tetapi peangamatan awal yang dilakukan tentang penggunaan games di kelas menunjukkan bahwa permainan yang diterapkan tidak cocok untuk kelas tersebut. Salah satu masalah yang teramati adalah bahwa games yang digunakan membutuhkan banyak waktu untuk dipersiapkan dan hanya memungkinkan sejumlah kecil siswa untuk berbicara. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan proses penggunaan games untuk mengajar berbicara dengan melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas partisipatif di salah satu sekolah di Bandung. Proses penelitian mengikuti langkah-langkah: Perencanaan, Pelaksanaan, Pengamatan, dan Refleksi. Ada dua set instrumen yang akan digunakan dalam penelitian ini, daftar pengamatan peneliti dan kuesioner guru. Para siswa diberikan pre-tes dan post-tes untuk mengetahui peningkatan keterampilan para siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa permainan 'Who am I' cocok dengan kebutuhan kelas dan memenuhi kriteria teori-teori permainan berbicara yang baik setelah diberikan beberapa modifikasi. Hasil uji t-tes pada skor siswa menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan yang dilakukan adalah signifikan dalam setiap siklus. Setiap aspek dari keterampilan berbicara siswa juga membuat peningkatan signifikan dengan t_obt_crit.

Abstract

Many studies have been researching critical discourse analysis, henceforth CDA, in analyzing a numerous contexts, nevertheless, those studies still have lack of contributions such as in pedagogical aspects and lack of incorporations with specialized technology such as corpus tool. However, this study intended to fill a gap that qualitatively aimed to explore on how teaching CDA focusing on sociocognitive approach through corpus analysis and to know learners’ responses about their experience. Then, this study concerns to three elements: corpus based approach, CDA approach, and pedagogical approach. The target of participants were undergraduate students of university in Karawang, Indonesia. It was randomly participated from higher semester, 7th semester, had been studying linguistics and learning media. The study ran for one month and included two training sessions for learners on how to use concordance software in analyzing words, phrases, concordance line, frequencies, and collocations in order to get sociocognitive which specialized by only microstructure couched by Van Dijk (2008). The corpus were made from 2 different newspaper with a specific issue contained a big data. The main findings showed that the participants can be able to use a concordance software independently as it seemed very excited in the exercise.  It indicated successful way that students eventually can criticize some discoures through corpus analysis that corroborated by the training and the learners’ responses. However, the further study requires to deepen and incorporate with other approaches such as systemic functional linguistics to strengthen the analysis.

Abstract

It is hard to select and produce appropriate semantic formulas of apologizing for paying off violation of social norms to restore harmony. It seems that it is even harder to realize such processes of selection and production in a non-native language. The study is of three folds; namely, it examines the realization of the apology strategies by students of a senior Boarding School in Arabic and English as a non-native language, the effects on the contextual factors (external vs. internal) on the students’ apologizing, and the pragmatic transfer. The participants were 101 male and 101 female students, recruited to fill in a Discourse Completion Task (DCT), which consisted of eight situations about the flouting of the politeness rules in the context of the Islamic boarding school, by drawing upon the five semantic formulas of apologizing from Blum-Kulka and Olshtain (1983) of Cross-Cultural Study of Speech Act Realization Patterns (CCSARP) for analyzing the data. The findings show that the students used identical semantic formulas in both languages. They prefer to use the “expression of regret” and “promise for forbearance” strategies. The findings also reveal that the internal and external factors affected the students’ selection and production of the apology strategies in both languages. In addition, the students’ pragmatic transfer occurred in linguistic areas, namely overgeneralization, inappropriateness, grammatical contrast, and conceptual transfer from L1 to L2, which are categorized into two types, namely, micro-negative transfer and macro-negative transfer. To conclude, these results indicate the students’ on-record-negative politeness attitudes towards the offended parties, which are determined by the contextual factors and the students’ lack of grammatical competence.

Abstract

Before improving and developing the best method for teaching speaking in vocational schools, teachers' beliefs and beliefs should be unpacked to know how far the understanding of them. This article presents a case study that examined vocational school teachers' beliefs and practices to do teach as a foreign language, especially speaking comprehension. Based on the case study, four teachers were asked to fill the questionnaire to get the information about their beliefs; forty students were confirming the practices of those beliefs in the classroom through questionnaires. Findings unfolded English teachers' views related to their roles, the students' positions, the effective English speaking teaching, the language used in the classroom, and the goals of teaching speaking. Based on the students' statement, the convergence of educators' beliefs to practices arrived at half of the teachers. The study results give teachers implications for constructing valid thoughts and provides an overview for stakeholders to decide an efficient teaching strategy.

Abstract

Fenomena maraknya penggunaan webinar menjadi salah satu alasan dilakukannya penelitian ini. Ada empat tujuan penelitian. yaitu mengamati rencana pembelajaran yang disiapkan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara peserta didik dewasa, kemungkinan peningkatan yang diusulkan oleh guru dan peserta didik dewasa, untuk mengetahui motivasi peserta didik untuk mengikuti kelas berbicara di webinar, dan untuk mengetahui seberapa baik peserta didik terlibat dalam proses pembelajaran. Metode yang digunakan adalah studi kasus untuk memahami fenomena spesifik yang terjadi di tempat tertentu. Triangulasi yang digunakan, berupa observasi, wawancara dan survei. Partisipan yang diamati adalah delapan pelajar dewasa dan dua guru dari perusahaan berpengalaman yang menyediakan kursus berbicara bahasa Inggris kepada pelajar dewasa melalui webinar dengan tambahan 108 koresponden survey. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa RPP yang digunakan sudah disesuaikan dengan format webinar dan selalu melibatkan siswa untuk aktif di kelas. hasil penilaian menunjukkan peningkatan keterampilan berbicara siswa. Masalah berikutnya adalah kemungkinan perbaikan yang diusulkan. Koneksi internet, spesifikasi gadget dan komputer literasi harus menjadi aspek mayoritas yang harus ditingkatkan untuk sesi belajar mengajar yang lebih baik di webinar. Hasil ketiga terbagi menjadi tiga motif utama. Itu adalah tujuan pribadi, perintah perusahaan mereka, dan untuk sertifikat. Temuan terakhir tentang seberapa baik peserta didik dewasa terlibat dalam pembelajaran dan pengajaran keterampilan berbicara disimpulkan pada jawaban yang sesuai dengan karakteristik peserta didik dewasa, dan faktor-faktor seperti pembicara / guru dan seberapa menarik materi. Implikasi dari penelitian ini adalah penerapan pembelajaran kemampuan berbicara melalui webinar yang lebih baik dan apa yang perlu dipersiapkan dan ditingkatkan oleh semua pihak terkait.

Abstract

Analisis fonetik segmentasi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui seberapa jelas pelafalan bahasa inggris guru bahasa inggris non-pentur asli dalam mengartikulasi bunyi-bunyi fonemik terkait fonetik segmentasi. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan 3 partisipan yang dipilih secara sengaja berdasarkan beberapa kriteria yang telah ditetapkan. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan dua jenis instrumen yaitu PIT (Tes kejelasan pengucapan) dan tes sejenis IELTS. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan penjelasan fonetik berbasis kesalahan. Temuan mengungkapkan bahwa dalam hal performa segmental, semua peserta memiliki inteligibilitas pengucapan yang tidak memadai dikarenakan banyaknya ditemukan distorsi beberapa konsonan seperti frikatif (dental, labio-dental, alveolar, dan palato-alveolar), dan juga fonemik vokal seperti vokal terbuka dan vokal dekat. Analisis ataupun kajian tentang artikulasi fonemik (segmental) amat sangat dibutuhkan bagi semua orang yang berbahasa inggris baik dari kalangan masyarakat umum, pelajar, terlebih lagi pengajar dikarenakan faktor pencentus utama unintelligible pronunciation (pengucapan yang tidak dipahami) adalah jumlah kesalahan pada artikulasi (produksi) fonemik dari kelas konsonan dan vokal.

Abstract

Revealing humanity issues through posters is a strategy to address conflicts. Therefore, campaign posters should attract the readers to concern about these issues. The unlimited multimodal texts provide chances to be semantically analyzed. This study focuses on social semiotics with a multimodal perspective in campaign posters that contain humanity issues. This study aims to identify the use of campaign posters in spreading principles of humanity and to reduce the prolonged humanitarian crisis in the world. The study applied reading images theory proposed by Kress & Leeuwen (2006), systemic functional linguistics proposed by Halliday (2004), the connotation of names and terms of address proposed by Keith Allan (2001), social semiotics proposed by Bezemer and Kress (2008), and observed the relation between verbal-visual texts through logico-semantic proposed by Martinec and Salway (2005). The study showed that the campaign posters can be considered as a part of efforts to improve the awareness of freedom, equality, and values comprehensively through multimodal.

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki strategi guru dalam membangun hubungan (rapport) dengan siswa dan bagaimana strategi ini berkorelasi dengan performa menulis siswa. Di dalam penelitian ini, ada dua dimensi hubungan guru-siswa—keterhubungan guru dan kecemasan siswa saat berinteraksi dengan guru—maka perhitungan korelasi dilakukan secara terpisah dengan menggunakan SPSS. Metode campuran—khususnya model concurent embedded—diterapkan untuk menjawab tujuan dari penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mengenali dan membantu siswa secara efektif menolong guru dalam membangun hubungan yang positif dengan siswa. Pernyataan ini kemudian didukung oleh temuan dari data kuantitatif yang menyatakan bahwa 1) terdapat korelasi positif yang signifikan antara keterhubungan guru dengan performa menulis siswa; dan 2) terdapat hubungan negatif yang signifikan antara kecemasan siswa dengan performa menulis mereka. Dari temuan yang telah diuraikan di atas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kehadiran hubungan guru-siswa yang positif memiliki korelasi yang signifikan dengan performa menulis siswa. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat membantu guru bahasa Inggris dengan strategi yang berpotensial untuk membangun hubungan yang positif selama pembelajaran online.Kata Kunci: Korelasi, Pembelajaran Online, Rapport, Strategi, Writing AbstractThis study aims at investigating teacher’s strategies in establishing rapport with the students and how these strategies correlate with students’ writing performance. As there are two dimensions of rapport—teacher’s connectedness and students’ anxiety when interacting with teacher—the correlation computation is done separately by using SPSS. The mixed-method—specifically concurrent embedded design—is then applied to answer this study’s research purposes. The findings show that recognizing and supporting students effectively help the teacher to establish a positive rapport with the students. This statement is then supported by the findings from quantitative data stating that 1) there is a positive significant correlation between teacher’s connectedness and students’ writing performance; and 2) there is a negative significant correlation between students’ anxiety and their writing performance signaling that when students’ anxiety decreases, students writing performance will increase. From the findings elaborated above, it can be concluded that establishing rapport is necessary as it helps students to increase academic achievement—in this case, their writing performance. The findings of this study are then hoped to aid language teachers with potential strategies to build positive rapport during online learning.Keywords: Correlation, Online Learning, Rapport, Strategy, Writing

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the factors that affect the students’ willingness to communicate in English in the classroom. This study employs a qualitative method, particularly the case study with the use of observation, questionnaire, and interview to collect the data. It can be concluded that there are mainly five factors that influence students’ willingness to communicate namely teachers, topic discussions, classroom environment, peers, and types of activities.
