Abstract

Background: MicroRNA (miRNA) is noncoding-RNA that comprises 18-22 nucleotides. miRNA binds its gene targets in the 3-untranslated region (3-UTR), causing direct degradation of mRNA and repressed translation of RNA. MicroRNA regulates various biological processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, cell growth, cell differentiation, and metabolism. Various changes have been identified miRNA expression in different types of cancers. This study aimed to describe the expression of miR-155 in patients with breast cancer tissue in Haji Adam Malik Hospital in Medan.Subjects and Method: This was a descriptive study. A total sample was 64 paraffin tissue blocks was taken from female patients with breast cancer at the surgical oncology unit, Haji Adam Malik Hospital in 2013-2014. RNA sample were isolated and checked using a spectrophotometer followed by cDNA synthesis. Then this sample was analyzed for miR-155 expression by using Real Time qPCR. Histopathological grade data were obtained from the medical record. Results: The miR-155 expression in the breast cancer patients is higher than that in the UniSp6 RNA Spike-in (internal controls). miR-155 expression was 29.64, 28.44, 29.22, in grade-I, grade-II, grade-III breast cancer, respectively. UniSp6 RNA Spike-in was 22.30, 22.89, 23.10, respectively in the control groups. Thus, increased of miR-155 expression was the highest in grade I breast cancer patients. Conclusion: Increased miR-155 expression can be used as a biomarker for early diagnosis and prognosis of breast cancer. Keywords: miRNA, miR-155, breast cancer.Correspondence: Henny Erina Saurmauli Ompusunggu. Abstract

Background : Antibiotics are drugs that work to prevent and treat infection caused by bacteria. However, improper use of antibiotics can cause antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance occurs due to irrational used without a prescription. The aim of this study is to determine the predisposition factors of non prescription use of antibiotics in Universitas HKBP Nommensen students. Methods: This research is descriptive study. Sample of this study were 210 active students of Universitas HKBP Nommensen, who were selected by using purposive sampling technique. The predisposition factors of non prescription use of antibiotics obtained from quetionnaire. Results: The predisposition factors of non prescription use of antibiotics in Universitas HKBP Nommensen students were poor knowledge of antibiotics, the suggestion of relatives or neighbors and the experience of consuming antibiotics to cure the same disease before. Financial problem was not a dominant factor. Conclusion: Poor knowledge of antibiotics, the suggestion of relatives or neighbors and the experience of consuming antibiotics before are the dominant predisposition factors of non prescription use of antibiotics.

Abstract

Background : Quality human resource are needed by our country in order to compete with other countries. Indicator of quality human resources graduated from university are good academic achievements. Academic achievement is affected by several factors, such as learning motivation. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between learning motivation and academic achievements in Medical Faculty of Universitas HKBP Nommensen students. Methods: This research was an analytic study. Respondents of this study were 148 active students of Universitas HKBP Nommensen. Learning motivation skor were obtained using an intrinsic motivation questionnaire and academic achievements were obtained from cumulative achievement index. Pearson test was used to analyzed the correlation between learning motivation and academic achievements of respondents. Results: Medical Faculty of Universitas HKBP Nommensen students majority had high learning motivation with academic achievments 3,19 ± 0,28. There was no correlation between learning motivation and academic achievements in Medical Faculty of Universitas HKBP Nommensen students (p = 0,227). Conclusion: There is no correlation between learning motivation and academic achievements in Medical Faculty of Universitas HKBP Nommensen students.

Abstract

Background: Analgesics are a type of medicine used to ease the sore. Certain types of analgesic drugs can be purchased by common people independently. This thing can be problematic if the analgesic drugs are not being used accordingly, the occurrence of unwanted side effects, for instance. The objective of this study is to find out an overview of analgesic drugs in self-medication towards the people of PKS Balam. Method: This study is a descriptive research. The respondents of this research are as many as 118 people of PKS Balam, which are chosen by using purpose sampling technique. An overview on the use of analgesic drugs in self-authentication in self-medication is acquired from questionnaire result. Result: Majority of respondents who consume analgesic drugs by self-medicating more than once a month complain to experience most frequent headache. Most common analgesic drug consumed is paracetamol. Majority of respondents initially read the brochure of medicine they are about to consume, but most of them understand only some information provided in the brochure. Majority of respondents acquired analgesic drugs purchased from drugstore. The most experienced side effects after consuming analgesic drug is sleepiness. Due to limited level of knowledge, majority of respondents will stop consuming the medicines and go to see the doctor when they experience side effects. Conclusion: The people of PKS Balam generally consume analgesic drugs by self-medicating more than once a month by initially reading the information about analgesic medicine they are about to consume.

Abstract

Introduction: Antibiotics are drugs that are used to prevent and treat infections caused by bacteria. Inappropriate use of antibiotics can cause various problems, such as bacterial resistance to antibiotics. One of the causes of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is the irrational in non prescription use of antibiotics. Aims: to determine the association of knowledge level about antibiotics with attitude and action level in non prescription use of antibiotics in Universitas HKBP Nommensen students. Method: There was 210 active students of Universitas HKBP Nommensen were included as respondents in this cross sectional study. The level of knowledge, attitudes and actions of respondents were measured using a questionnaire. Chi Square test was used to analyzed the association of knowledge with attitude and action of respondents. Result: There was no significant association of knowledge level about antibiotics with attitude and action level in non prescription use of antibiotics in Universitas HKBP Nommensen students (p > 0,005). Conclusion: Knowledge is not a dominant factor influencing both attitude and action in non prescription use of antibiotics.

Abstract

In 2022, 10,6 million people in the world were infected with tuberculosis and Indonesia ranks second. As many as 8 million of the world’s population died from tobacco smoking in 2021. Cavitary lung lesions are cavities filled with air in the lungs and smoking can directly damage lung parenchyma due its contents so tuberculosis patients who smoke are more risk of developing lung cavities. This study aims to determine association between smoking and formation of lung cavity. This study was an observational analytic study with case-control design using 80 samples consisting of 40 smoking and 40 non-smoker patients. Sample selection used purposive sampling technique and samples were collected from medical records in 2021. Data analysis used chi-square test. It was found that patients with lung cavity were 46,3% and patients who smoked and had lung cavity were 30%. Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between smoking and the formation of lung cavity lesions in tuberculosis patients at RSUP H Adam Malik with p = 0,014 (p < 0,05) and tuberculosis patients who smoke have a risk of 3,115 times to have lung cavity lesions (OR = 3,115).
