Abstract

The COVID-19 outbreak has transformed various parts of life, including teaching and learning methods. Teachers, especially Indonesian English teachers, were taken aback by the abrupt transition from offline to online instruction because it was unanticipated and unprepared. This paper attempted to investigate how teachers implement their pedagogical knowledge in the online environment during the pandemic and how they improve on using computer-assisted language learning (CALL) during the sudden shift from offline to online instruction. The findings revealed that teaching methods are being adapted to accommodate the features of the online platform. In order to adjust to this new situation, teachers use their creativity to adapt the stages of cooperative learning, collaborative learning, and class discussion in an online context. Participating in virtual workshops and training also helps teachers improve their digital skills concerning internet material. In the future, the results of the present study can be applied to improve the teacher education curriculum. Specifically, it is suggested to construct a course for the teacher education curriculum that places pre-service teachers in diverse and challenging conditions.

Abstract

The English Teaching Methods training program as a Community Service activity was carried out at one of the kindergarten schools, in Malang city. This training aims to improve the professionalism of kindergarten Teachers in teaching English materials. This activity consists of several stages namely preliminary study, material preparation, onsite training, and evaluation. The preliminary study, which involved discussion with presenters and school principals, was conducted to identify problems and assess teachers' needs. During the training process, teachers are equipped with theoretical frameworks, methodological examples, and English teaching materials specifically tailored for the effective instruction of young learners. Subsequently, the educators were allocated a period for discussion, during which they engaged in the development of inventive approaches and media. These outputs were subsequently delivered on the next day. The training instructors also offered feedback for every new method and media creation that was presented by the teachers. Upon the end of the training program, the participants offered testimonials and suggested ideas pertaining to the training. In addition, the lecturers offered instructional objects that can be utilized when teaching English in kindergarten.

Abstract

Reading is a skill that is initially taught in schools. Students are introduced to the alphabet and later learn to read texts. Reading Foreign languages is also introduced when students learn a foreign language. The student requires reading activities that include vocabulary learning. Extensive reading is one of the practical activities of reading. Nowadays, extensive reading activities include reading printed and digital text in e-books, journals, and internet and social media articles. In addition, digital extensive reading research on university students of agriculture is still rare. Thus, research on digital-mediated extensive reading in agricultural students’ needs to be conducted to investigate whether it improves their reading comprehension. This study involved 84 agricultural students majoring Agroecotechnology study program. The participants take an English course. The data for this study was taken from the pre-test and post-test scores and questionnaire. The data will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the study shows that the digital-mediated extensive reading effectively enhances the student's reading comprehension in English as academic purposes (EAP) setting, and the students express that the digital-mediated extensive reading provides flexibility, technology utilization, and reading.

Abstract

Salah satu media berkomunikasi antar negara yaitu melalui bahasa Inggris. Dengan kata lain, sangat penting untuk mengetahui bahasa Inggris di dunia modern. Tes TOEFL adalah salah satu cara untuk menunjukkan bahwa Anda tahu cara berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan baik. TOEFL yang merupakan singkatan dari “Test of English as a Foreign Language” merupakan jenis tes yang sering digunakan untuk mengukur seberapa baik seseorang dapat berbicara dan memahami bahasa Inggris. Mayoritas institusi juga akan meminta sertifikat TOEFL sebagai persyaratan, seperti untuk mengikuti ujian akhir atau mendaftar kuliah di dalam atau luar negeri. Seringkali institusi meminta sertifikat TOEFL dengan skor minimal 450 atau 500 sebagai persyaratan. Namun mendapatkan angka 450 atau 500 merupakan hal yang dikhawatirkan dan bahkan ditakuti oleh mahasiswa karena terkesan sulit untuk dilakukan. Sebagian besar orang merasa kesulitan untuk mendapatkan skor TOEFL yang dibutuhkan. Oleh karena itu, tujuan pelatihan ini adalah untuk membantu para pelajar dan masyarakat pada umumnya yang membutuhkan atau meningkatkan nilai TOEFL sebagai syarat sekolah. Kegiatan ini berlangsung secara live melalui platform Zoom Meeting. Pelaksanakan kegiatan ini terdiri dari persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan peninjauan atau pemantauan. Kegiatan ini memakan waktu sekitar tiga bulan, dan mencakup materi pelatihan, mendapatkan pelatihan TOEFL intensif, dan mengikuti tes TOEFL sebelum dan sesudah. Setelah melakukan kegiatan ini, diketahui peserta lebih memahami materi dan jenis-jenis soal TOEFL. Selain itu, terdapat peningkatan skor pre-test dan post-test yang mana skor post-test lebih baik dibandingkan dengan skor pre-test di akhir kegiatan ini.

Abstract

Responding to the pivotal role of English nowadays, higher education institutions require every student to take an English course. In higher education, teaching English focuses more on the specific discipline of the students. It helps students to have good English capabilities within their field of study. Writing skill is demanded because the students are required to publish an article as a graduation requirement. In order to find suitable teaching strategies for writing, it is necessary to know the writing difficulty the students encounter. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the agriculture students’ difficulty in writing essays. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this study. The data was obtained from the interviews and students' essays. The result of the study showed that generating ideas, vocabulary, and grammar are the constraints the students faced. This study concludes that the students need a guidance on those constraints.

Abstract

     Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is a plant with high economic value which is widely cultivated in Indonesia. Due to unfavorable environmental factors and improper cultivation methods, the supply of broccoli fluctuates, thus efforts must be made to boost production by altering the environment, adopting the use of paranets, and choosing the appropriate type. The study was carried out from February to April 2023 at an elevation of 460 meters above sea level in the Jatimulyo experimental field, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Brawijaya, Lowokwaru District, Malang City, East Java. Two treatments variety and shade were used in the study's nested design. Green magic and Lucky are among the primary plot variations, while no shade, 25% shade, 50% shade, and 75% shade are among the subplot variations related to shade.. The findings demonstrated that 25% shade was the ideal amount of cover to provide broccoli plants with the microenvironments they needed to growth and yield. Compared to the Lucky variety, which had a yield loss of 178.91 g.plant-1 (43.62%), the Green Magic variety was more suited to planting on medium plains, which Green magic loss of 22.26 g.plant-1 (6.99%).

Abstract

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic reconfigured several aspects of life, one of which is education. A study on grassroots voices on online learning is a dearth of. Therefore, a present study was addressed to uncover teachers’ and students’ voices in online learning. Questionnaires and interviews were employed to garner data. 233 students and 30 teachers’ responses from questionnaires were obtained. The interviews were conducted to obtain in-depth data. The data were interpreted descriptively. The results showcased that students’ voices on the ease of GC and GC performance were positive, yet institution support was not maximally implemented. Simultaneously, the teachers’ voices on the ease of GC, the performance of GC, and the supports of institution were positive. In a nutshell, teachers and students have a positive impression of online learning. Their positive impression comes from the ease of the online platform operation, the online platform’s good performance, but student views that the institutional support is not maximally implemented. The ease of using online platforms should be considered in choosing one of the various online platforms available. The online platform features are not complicated for students and teachers to easily operationalize the online platform and support teaching and learning activities such as delivering materials, assigning tasks, submitting a task, and assessing tasks.

Abstract

Perubahan iklim seperti peningkatan curah hujan dan suhu menimbulkan ancaman dalam sektor pertanian, karena dapat mengganggu sebaran neraca air. Pemenuhan kebutuhan pangan dapat teratasi dengan pembudidayaan tanaman sorgum. Sorgum merupakan tanaman pangan alternatif yang adaptif terhadap perubahan iklim. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah memelajari dampak perubahan iklim terhadap ketersediaan air dan produktivitas tanaman sorgum (Sorghum bicolor L.). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada Bulan Juli hingga September 2022 di Kecamatan Demon Pagong, Kabupaten Flores Timur. Alat yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah thermometer maksmimum, thermometer minimum, penangkar hujan observatorium, dan Microsoft Excel. Bahan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah data curah hujan dan suhu selama 30 tahun (1992-2021) yang diperoleh dari Stasiun Klimatologi Gewayanta Larantuka dengan pengelompokkan data selama 10 tahun serta data produktivitas tanaman sorgum selama 10 tahun terakhir (2012-2021). Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian survei dengan analisis data sekunder tentang perubahan iklim, analisis neraca air, dan analisis produktivitas tanaman sorgum. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perubahan iklim memengaruhi perubahan ketersediaan air yang berdampak terhadap produktivitas tanaman sorgum.

Abstract

Universitas Brawijaya memiliki dua Agrotecnopark (ATP), salah satunya adalah ATP Jatikerto. Kawasan ATP Jatikerto seluas sekitar 15 hektar tersebut difungsikan sebagai kebun percobaan dan pendidikan. Lokasi ATP yang berada di dataran rendah memungkinkan daerah tersebut terdampak oleh perubahan atau pergeseran musim akibat pemanasan global yang mempengaruhi produktivitas tanaman, sehingga hasil panen terkadang kurang memuaskan. Oleh sebab itu pengetahuan dan kegiatan antisipatif terhadap pergeseran musim perlu diketahui oleh pengelola kebun ATP Jatikerto. Tidak optimalnya tindakan antisipatif yang dilakukan menunjukkan kurangnya pemahaman tentang perubahan musim dan iklim. Untuk menanggapi kebutuhan pengelola kebun terhadap kurangnya informasi terkait perubahan iklim dan pergeseran musim, maka tim KJF Laboratorium Klimatologi FP UB melakukan pengabdian masyarakat di ATP Jatikerto. Pengabdian masyarakat dilakukan dengan memberikan penyuluhan dan pendampingan kegiatan budidaya tanaman di kebun untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan pemahaman pengelola kebun terkait tindakan untuk mengansipasi pergeseran musim. Dari penyuluhan dan pendampingan yang telah dilakukan dapat disimpulkan bahwa pengelolaan tanaman di kebun Jatikerto untuk mengantisipasi perubahan  musim sudah baik dan dilakukan secara intensif dengan penerapan aplikasi mulsa organik (jerami padi, batang jagung dan daun turi) serta pemberian pupuk organik (pupuk kandang sapi, pupuk kandang ayam dan pupuk kandang kambing).
