Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS) approach assisted by visual media on critical thinking abilities and scientific attitudes of students on biology subjects on the classification of living things. The research method used a quasi-experimental research sample of 2 classes determined by random sampling. Class VII1 as many as 32 students were taught with the approach of Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS) assisted by visual media and class VII2 as many as 32 students were taught with conventional learning. The research instrument tests the form of critical thinking Cornell X which is based on Ennis and was independently developed by researchers and scientific attitude observation sheets. The data analysis technique used partial hypothesis testing at a significant level ∝ = 0.05. The results showed 1) There was a significant influence of the approach of Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS) assisted by visual media on students' critical thinking skills (tcount = 2.37; ttable (0.05.62) = 1.66). 2) There is a significant influence of the Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS) approach assisted by visual media on scientific attitudes (tcount = 3.88; table (0.05.62) = 1.66). The results showed that the level of thinking ability using the SETS approach assisted by visual media ((X) ̅ = 82.38) was higher than conventional learning ((X) 49 = 49.00). The results of the study also showed better scientific attitudes in the classroom the SETS approach assisted by visual media ((X) ̅ = 74.63) is better than conventional learning ((X) ̅ = 43.02). Thus, learning science with the SETS approach must continue to be developed because implementing SETS learning can improve students' critical thinking skills and scientific attitudes. Keywords: guided inquiry, dynamic fluid, learning outcomes

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of a booklet on the rare flora and fauna of the Toba Caldera as instructional material for biodiversity topics. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the 4D model, which consists of the Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. The feasibility of the booklet was assessed based on expert validation, teacher responses, and student responses, while its effectiveness was evaluated using the Mann–Whitney test and N-Gain analysis. The feasibility results indicated that the booklet was categorized as very good based on expert validation. Teacher responses were also rated very good, with a score of 96.25%, and student responses in each trial likewise fell within the very good category. The effectiveness test conducted on students at SMAN 1 Lumban Julu showed an N-Gain value of 0.68, which was categorized as moderate. The Mann–Whitney test indicated a significant difference in ecological literacy knowledge between the experimental and control classes on the posttest, with a probability value of 0.00 < 0.05. In addition, students’ biodiversity ecoliteracy knowledge reached 86.64%, which was classified as high. Therefore, the developed booklet is effective in improving students’ ecological literacy knowledge and is feasible for use as a supplementary teaching material in biodiversity learning by utilizing local potential as a learning resource.

Abstract

The Toba Caldera region, designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark, requires continuous efforts to preserve its environment and strengthen the ecoliteracy of its community. This study investigated improvements in students’ ecoliteracy, including knowledge, environmental caring attitudes, and pro-environmental behaviors, through the use of problem based learning (PBL) integrated with geopark socioscientific issues (GSSI) presented in a digital comic (Comdigi) format. A total of 156 junior high school students in the Toba Caldera area participated in the study. A total of 78 students learned through direct instruction (DI), and 78 received PBL with GSSI in Comdigi. Ecoliteracy knowledge was measured using a 30-item test, while caring attitude and pro-environmental behavior were assessed using questionnaires with 15 items each. The results showed that PBL integrated with GSSI in Comdigi significantly outperformed DI in enhancing ecoliteracy knowledge 39.80%, caring attitudes 49.8% and in pro-environmental behaviors 12.50% with N-gain score of 0.71. These findings confirm that incorporating GSSI in a Comdigi based PBL model effectively strengthens students’ ecoliteracy related to the Toba Caldera UNESCO Global Geopark (TCUGGp).

Abstract

This study aims to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of a booklet on amphibian species diversity in the Silahisabungan Geosite as a teaching material for biodiversity topics. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model, which consists of the Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. The feasibility of the booklet was evaluated based on expert validation, teacher responses, and student responses, while its effectiveness was assessed through improvements in students’ learning outcomes. Data were collected through interviews, needs analysis questionnaires, booklet validation questionnaires, teacher and student response questionnaires, and cognitive learning achievement tests. The results of the study indicate that: (1) the booklet validation results were categorized as good to very good, with scores of 79.4 from the content expert, 96 from the instructional design expert, and 94 from the graphic design expert; (2) teacher responses were very positive with a score of 96.8, while student responses in individual, small-group, and large-group trials obtained scores of 97.2, 96.2, and 93.75, respectively; (3) the effectiveness test conducted on 27 students showed an N-Gain value of 0.74, classified as high; and (4) the t-test revealed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (t = 6.213; p < 0.05). Therefore, the developed booklet is effective in improving students’ cognitive knowledge and is feasible for use as a supplementary teaching material in biodiversity learning.
