Abstract

Efforts to anticipate and overcome fire occurrence in wetland wood industries are not effective to reduce fire occurrence in dry season. This paper presents our research in Sebangun Bumi Andalas Wood Industries (SBAWI), South Sumatra that aims to (a) find effective water table depth to reduce fire danger, and (b) propose forest management schemes based on water management to reduce fire danger. We monitored daily rainfall, air temperature, and water table depth for period of 1 April 2009 to 11 May 2010 for data input to our model. Fire danger rating was assessed using KBDI model that have been modified to meet local condition of SBAWI, South Sumatra. The results showed that KBDI reached extreme level in August and September 2009 when rainfall was low. Using an analysis of time intensity curve (TI curve) of KBDI, we obtained KBDI onset rate was 12/day. Critical water table depth that is able to reduce KBDI value was 0.66m. The more water table depth than this value, the more KBDI value was. The onset rate was used as basis for water management option to maintain water table depth less than the critical value. Several water management options were described in this paper based on fire danger level and season.

Abstract

The number of sago palm species in Maluku province becomes the current issue of biodiversity. The research aimed to clarify the species of sago palm in the Seram island, Maluku province. The research was conducted from March to November 2009 in three sample regions i.e. Luhu of Seram Bagian Barat (SBB) district, Sawai of Maluku Tengah (MT) district, and Werinama of Seram Bagian Timur (SBT) district. Genetic analysis was done at the laboratory of plant biology Inter Center University (ICU) Bogor Agricultural University. Variety of palm sagu was analyzed using index of similarity analysis for group similarity and Shannon-Wiener (H’) index for biodiversity of species. Further, the genetic analysis used isozyme method showed that group of sago in Seram Island shared group similarity included index value ranging from 60.66–80.92%. Based on the result of Shannon-Wiener (H’) index, all growth phases of sago palm group in Seram Island generally indicated a very low H’ value ranging from 0.61 – 0.90. Clearly, the genetic analysis illustrated there were only two kinds of sago species in Seram Island i.e. Metroxylon rumphii Mart. and M. sagus Rottb. The first species consists of three varieties i.e. 1) Microcanthum Becc., 2) Sylvestre Becc., and 3) Rotang Becc. Sago species of M. sagu Rottb. has solely one variety Molat Becc. Here, variety of Microcanthum is divided by two kinds of variety i.e. Tuni and Makanaro. Seram Bagian Barat (SBB), Sawai Kab. Maluku Tengah (MT), dan Werinama Kab. Seram Bagian Timur (SBT). Sedangkan spesies M. sagu Rottb. hanya memiliki satu varietas yakni Molat Becc.  Varietas Microcanthum terbagi atas dua subvarietas, yaitu Tuni dan Makanaro.

Abstract

Kata kunci: kualitas air, sungai Cisadane   WATER QUALITY OF CISADANE RIVER, WEST JAVA-BANTEN ABSTRACT Cisadane River has functions and values for human welfare and wildlife. Human activities in using river water and dumping waste to the river could decrease water quality of Cisadane River. The aim of this research was to analysis water quality of Cisadane River based on physical and chemical factor.  Water sampling was conducted along Cisadane River from up to downstream at nine (9) stations. Result showed that Cisadane River is polluted. Generally, water quality of Cisadane River in up and middle part (Station 1-6) could be used for purposes as in Class 2 (Gov.Reg/PP No.82/2001) and classified into moderately polluted. But, water quality of down Cisadane River (Station 7-9) only for Class 3 and 4 that categorized into heavily polluted. Keywords: Cisadane river, water quality
