Abstract

This study discusses the protagonist's friends' betrayal in the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. It takes about the types of betrayal. Then, Reis’ and Spencer's theory are taken to deal with the impacts of betrayal. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to reveal the data. The data was originally taken from the novel. It is found that five data are to reveal the type of betrayal and twelve data to describe the impacts of betrayal. The results of this study indicate that there are two types of betrayal received by Hannah, i.e., intimate partner betrayal and interpersonal betrayal. It is also found that the impacts Hannah received as a result of the betrayal of her friends are loss of trust, loss of relationship/friendship, loss of sense of security, and loss of self-esteem. All data in this study prove that the protagonist’s friends in the novel betray her.

Abstract

This paper explores the impacts of using smartphones vs laptops on students' academic achievement in their English courses and their satisfaction in learning English via open distance learning (ODL). Experiments were conducted in authentic teaching sessions with a total of 304 undergraduates from a local university. The methodology applied is a quasi-experimental design with post-test-only. Results indicate that the relationship between the grade obtained and level of satisfaction with gadget is low and not significant at 5% level of significance. However, there is a significant relationship between the level of satisfaction towards gadgets used for learning English courses and learning English via ODL classes since the p-value is significant with a correlation value of 0.455. Finally, there is a low correlation between the grade obtained and level of satisfaction in learning English during ODL classes. Future research should be conducted to further check on the effects of using mobile phones against other mobile devices on other subjects learnt in the universities.

Abstract

The study investigates the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension. Reading Comprehension is the ability to read, process it and understand its meaning. It relies on two, interconnected abilities: word reading, being able to decode the symbols on the page and language comprehension, being able to understand the meaning of the words and sentences); meanwhile comprehension is achieved when the reader successfully extracts the useful knowledge from a text and constructs it into a new understandings of their own. The data were collected from 30 tenth grade students. The test items of vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension were given to the students to measure their level of vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. The results were compared to find out the correlation between those variables. The results show that there was strong correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension. The current study concludes that students’ experiences and reading strategies help the students understand text, but vocabulary was more contributive in helping the students to comprehend the texts.

Abstract

This research examines the portrayal of domestic violence in Colleen Hoover’s novel It Ends with Us, focusing on the experiences of the protagonist, Lily Bloom, who endures various forms of abuse both in her childhood and adulthood. The study identifies four major categories of domestic violence depicted in the narrative—physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual—by employing Tulangow’s theoretical framework on domestic violence. Conducted through a qualitative descriptive method as outlined by Creswell (2012), this study analyzes textual evidence drawn from the novel to understand the psychological, emotional, and social consequences of abuse on the main character. The findings reveal that domestic violence in the novel not only results in physical injuries but also generates long-lasting psychological trauma, fear, anxiety, and diminished self-worth. Furthermore, the narrative exposes the cyclical nature of abuse and its intergenerational impact, especially through Lily’s reflections on her childhood and her concerns about her unborn child. This study demonstrates how literary fiction can serve as a powerful vehicle for raising public awareness of gender-based violence, offering insight into the lived realities of survivors, and prompting critical reflection on emotional resilience, agency, and social intervention.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the effectiveness of the modeling the way (MTW) method in enhancing the learning of English vocabulary among third-year students at MTS Ta'dib Al-Mu'allimin Al-Islamy. The MTW method, which emphasizes the role of modeling and imitation in language learning, was implemented in a controlled classroom setting to assess its impact on students' vocabulary acquisition. The data were collected through observations, interviews, and a vocabulary test administered before and after the intervention. The findings indicate that the MTW method significantly improved students' vocabulary retention and recall, with a notable increase in their ability to use new words in context. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of teacher modeling and student engagement in the learning process. Then, this study suggests that the MTW method can be a valuable tool for English language instructors seeking to enhance their students' vocabulary skills. The study's implications for language teaching and learning are discussed for emphasizing the potential of the MTW method to improve students' language proficiency and overall academic performance.

Abstract

This study examines how social class differences are portrayed and how they affect the protagonists in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Using Marxist literary theory, the analysis focuses on class distinctions between the upper and lower classes and explores their implications for social behavior and personal identity. The qualitative descriptive method is applied to textual data gathered from close reading of the novel and relevant critical sources. The findings indicate that social class has significant impacts on the characters’ lives, manifested through experiences of bullying, jealousy, and internalized social inequality. The protagonists, particularly Meg and Amy March, face emotional conflict and social exclusion as consequences of their lower-class status. These experiences not only reveal structural injustices but also reflect broader capitalist social dynamics that define access to power, privilege, and self-worth. The study concludes that Little Women remains a valuable text for understanding how literature mirrors the enduring social hierarchies that shape human experience.

Abstract

Food plays a pivotal role in the construction of cultural identity and the preservation of intangible heritage across societies. This study explores the symbolic meanings embedded in the Nasi Hadap-Hadapan tradition, a central element in Malay wedding rituals in Tanjung Balai, North Sumatra. The practice of Nasi Hadap-Hadapan—a ceremonial meal shared by the bride, groom, and their families—represents not only a social gathering but also a transmission of philosophical values and cultural wisdom. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through interviews with cultural practitioners, community elders, and government officials, complemented by participant observation. The findings reveal that each component of the food—such as rice, ayam masak bulat (whole chicken), assorted cakes, sweets, and vegetables—carries symbolic meanings that reflect prosperity, harmony, perseverance, and readiness for married life. Despite its deep cultural significance, the tradition is increasingly perceived as a form of entertainment rather than a sacred practice, largely due to modernization and diminishing intergenerational knowledge. This article argues that revitalizing and contextualizing Nasi Hadap-Hadapan is essential for safeguarding Malay intangible heritage while reinforcing social cohesion in multicultural Indonesia.

Abstract

This article investigates the forms and causes of depression experienced by the protagonist in Cho Nam-Joo’s novel Kim Ji-Yeong, Born 1982, situating the narrative within the intersection of psychology, gender studies, and feminist literary criticism. Drawing on Bhowmik et al.’s (2012) framework of depression, the study applies a qualitative descriptive method to examine the protagonist’s psychological decline, which unfolds through three stages: baby blues, postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis. Textual analysis reveals that Ji-Yeong’s condition is triggered by sleep disturbances, stressful life events, and the forced resignation from her professional career. These immediate causes, however, are embedded within broader patriarchal structures that regulate women’s identities and diminish their autonomy. The findings underscore that Ji-Yeong’s depression is not merely an individual pathology but a cultural and political condition shaped by systemic gender inequality. The novel dramatizes how patriarchal surveillance, misogyny, and intergenerational trauma exacerbate women’s mental health struggles. By portraying Ji-Yeong’s breakdown as both personal and collective, Cho Nam-Joo transforms literature into a form of feminist critique. This article contributes to literary psychology by demonstrating how fiction can illuminate the sociocultural dimensions of depression, offering insights that extend beyond psychiatry into the realm of social justice.
