Abstract

Learning styles have huge contributions in developing the efficiency in education. The concept of learning styles has been explored by many experts in various background of study. Fleming (2001) defines learning style as an individual’s characteristics and preferred ways of gathering, organizing, and thinking about information. This study aims to identify the students’ learning styles according to the classifications of learning styles and how their learning strategies. VAK questionnaire was utilized in this study to know the students’ preferred learning styles. Interview was also conducted in collecting some additional information regarding the students’ learning. 21 adult EFL learners majoring in English education of postgraduate Program of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan were involved as a research sample. From the interview conducted to three participants as representatives of each learning styles it was discovered that each learning has its own learning strategy which is different from one another. One respondent as a visual learner argued that she felt happy if the lecturer provides visual-demonstration in class such as movies, videos, and PowerPoint presentation. Another respondent as an auditory learner preferred to learn by listening and writing down important information that she have learnt. The other respondent as a kinaesthetic learner would find easy to understand and remember well if she was involved practice.

Abstract

Attitude revealed as a serious issue in foreign language learning. It is a way for someone to behave on a situation, whether like or dislike, good or bad, and positive or negative. This study investigates the EFL students’ attitude toward English language learning. This study aims to identify the students’ attitude toward English language learning in three aspects; they are behavior, cognitive and affective. A close-ended questionnaire was distributed to 10 students of post-graduate Program of Ahmad Dahlan University. Then, an interview was also conducted with three students as representatives from every aspect of attitude. The results of this qualitative study showed a positive attitude toward English language learning in three aspects; behavioral, cognitive, and affective. Furthermore, the result also showed the influence of attitude toward students’ achievement and motivation in English language learning.

Abstract

Praktisi Mengajar Program is a part of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative. In this study, researcher examines students’ perception of the Praktisi Mengajar Program. The study aims to determine the students’ views on the importance of the program, its advantages and disadvantages, and how they adapt to it. This research is a qualitative study that collects data by distributing questionnaires to English education students at Nahdlatul Ulama University of South Kalimantan, who have participated in the campus teaching program. This research was conducted during the 2023/2024 academic year. The sample for this study consisted of 15 English education students at Nahdlatul Ulama University, South Kalimantan. Data analysis was performed using the data model proposed by Sugiyono (2019). Initially, the researcher distributed questionnaires to the students. Subsequently, the collected data were re-examined and presented in the form of tables, bar charts, and percentages. The results of the study showed that 72% of students considered the program important, 62% felt the program was sufficient, 68% saw a positive impact, and 65% were able to adapt well to the program. Overall, the average positive assessment was 67%, indicating that the Praktisi Mengajar Program had a beneficial impact on students.

Abstract

The intention of this experimental research is to investigate the impact of small group discussion techniques using pictionary game on students’ vocabulary achievement targeting 7th grade students of MTsN 1 Banjar. The methodology of the study is designed to be a quantitative conducted by applying the pre-test and post-test.  A total of 62 7th graders were the subjects of the study.  Samples were taken using intentional sampling techniques, involved two classes with 31 students each.  These classes are assigned to experimental and control classes. Prior to starting treatment, a pre-test was administered to check the student's basic vocabulary comprehension.  Data collection were from the test applied before and after the experimental treatment. After calculation, considering the value of 30.38, which is greater than 0, it can be stated that the small group discussion technique is effective in learning vocabulary.  The t-observation value (up to 30.38) is higher than the t-table (table = 1.699), demonstrating whether the Small Group Discussion is significantly effective for enriching vocabularies compared to using other techniques that usually implemented by the teacher at MTsN 1 Banjar, South Kalimantan.

Abstract

Proficiency in English today is intended as a tool for effective communication on a global stage, necessitating an update to traditional strategies. This article aims to identify alternative strategies within the English Zone program at modern Islamic boarding schools to support students' preparation for global communication and used descriptive qualitative research methodology. Three main steps were employed to achieve this goal: (1) understanding the existing concepts and strategies of the English Zone implementation, (2) identifying challenges and obstacles during the program’s implementation, and (3) formulating alternative strategies to enhance students' readiness for global communication through Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The analysis methods applied include statistical and descriptive analysis. The findings of this study indicate that Foreign Language Debate Practice and Students’ Discussion, with agreed-upon adjustments, are the alternative strategies within the English Zone program at modern Islamic boarding schools to help students prepare for the global communication era.

Abstract

This research is driven by the fact that school-age children with language or speech delays are at an increased risk of developing learning and reading disabilities, which can lead to challenges in reading and writing. This research aims to find out how the language disorders experienced by some learners from the Nur Ramadhan Gambut Inclusive PAUD located in the Sejahtera Mandiri Asri Gambut Complex Kertak Hanyar allow researchers to find out how these learners interact in their daily activities. This research employs qualitative methods to explore phenomena by analyzing a series of data. Data collection is conducted through observation and interviews. The research identifies two key factors: (1) poor communication and (2) birth defects.
