Abstract

One of the most important teaching materials is textbook. It is also inseparable from learning English in elementary school. Using English textbook in Elementary school to help a teacher in conveying material to their students. Textbooks that are suitable for use as teacher handbooks are those that are in accordance with the competency standards set by the ministry of education. The aims of the research are to analyze: the values of character education as reflected in the sixth grade English textbook of elementary school entitled "Basic English" which is used at SDN Jombatan 5 Jombang and how to implement character education values ??in the textbook. The method used in this study was a qualitative descriptive approach using interactive content analysis. The subjects of this study were 14 themes of subject matter in English textbook “Basic English”. The results of this study stated that the sixth grade English textbook entitled "Basic English" Religiousness, honesty, intelligence, toughness, democracy, care, independence, Logical thinking, critical, creative, and innovative, courage takes risk, action oriented, leadership, hard work, responsibility, healthy lifestyle, discipline, confidence, curiosity, loving science, Awareness of rights and self-and other obligations and Adherence to social rules and others characters education values are namely appreciating the work and achievements of others, politeness, nationalism, and respecting diversity. And those values are explained implicitly and explicitly.

Abstract

This study develops a different way to teach language, namely by using subtitled films as a medium. Here the researcher uses cartoons and English subtitles. The purpose of this study was to determine the speaking ability of the experimental and control groups, as well as to determine the significant effect of using English subtitled films on the speaking ability of class XI students at SMA Negeri Ngoro for the academic year 2020/2021. The design of this study was a quasi-experimental with nonrandomized control group design, pretest-posttest design. There is a significant effect of using film subtitles as a medium in teaching speaking. Teaching speaking using film subtitles as a medium is more effective than teaching speaking using film. So, the researcher can conclude that English subtitled films have an impact on students' speaking ability.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the anxiety experienced by English pre-service teachers in their teaching practicum during this COVID-19 pandemic. This study was a descriptive case study. The participants of this study were 28 students from an English language department at a private university in East Java. These students carried out their practice teaching from January 2, up to February 28, 2022. Then, the researcher administered questionnaires in the form of open-ended questions through Google Form to collect the data. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the theory of a-five factor language teachers’ anxiety by Devellis. Meanwhile, the technique of data analysis used was the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s theory. The results of this study showed that the five factors of teaching anxiety comprising of inexperience teaching, self-perception of language proficiency, feeling afraid of getting negative evaluation, the students’ less interest in teaching activities, and getting difficulty in their teaching time management, existed. Hopefully, this present study results can be used as the consideration for EFL lecturers in providing some strategies for the future English pre-service teachers to overcome their teaching anxiety.

Abstract

The students’ writing ability was low because they were reluctant to cooperate with their friends when writing. Therefore, the researchers were interested in investigating the effectiveness of collaborative writing for teaching writing paragraphs in this post-pandemic. This study used a pre-experimental design, a one group pre-test post-test research design. Twenty-five students of an English department in a private university in East Java became the population as well as the sample. Pre-test and post-test of writing a paragraph were used to collect the data. The researchers used a descriptive statistics and a paired-sample test to analyze the data. The results show that the students’ writing average score increased from 68.6 to 81.2. Meanwhile, the result of a paired- sample test tells that sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000. It means that the implementation of collaborative writing was effective to teach writing paragraphs. Hopefully, the EFL teachers use collaborative writing in their writing classes.
