Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed at exploring whether a process-genre approach (PGA) teaching steps can help develop senior high students’ writing skills of report text based on schematic structures and linguistic features analysis. A descriptive research design embracing case study characteristics was employed (Nunan, 1992; Cresswell, 2012). The data were gained from teaching process and students’ texts analysis. The basic framework of process-genre approach is the synthesis of teaching steps in genre- and process-based approaches (Badger White, 2000; Emilia, 2010). Students’ texts were analyzed in terms of Report text’s schematic structures and linguistic features using SFL GBA frameworks (Linguistic and Education Research Network, 1990; Gerot Wignell, 1994; Halliday, 1994; Anderson Anderson, 1997; Christie, 2005; Feez Joyce, 2006; Hyland 2007; Emilia, 2012). The results show that, to some extent, PGA helps students develop writing skills of Report text specifically on the genre knowledge, writing process, and feedback from peers and teacher which was observed from the teaching process and schematic structures and linguistic features analysis. Nevertheless, it is figured out that the low-achieving students need longer modelling and teacher-student conference stages. This study is expected to contribute towards teacher’s understanding in implementing and overcoming problems related to PGA in EFL classes in Indonesia, especially in emphasizing the modelling stage for the low-achieving students and in teaching other genres and language skills. Keywords: Process-based approach, genre-based approach, process-genre approach

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify the language proficiency level of primary English language teachers’ (PELTs) productive skills (speaking and writing) analyzed using the Common European Framework of References (CEFR) and Kurikulum Merdeka. As a foreign language in Indonesia, English language proficiency among PELTs is crucial to determine the success of the learning process in a classroom. Furthermore, PELTs should also possess adequate language proficiency to communicate effectively with students in any situation. However, several local context studies show the low language proficiency level possessed by PELTs. The low proficiency level was mostly gained through general English tests, for example TOEFL, which focuses on teachers’ receptive skills (listening and reading) and structure. A qualitative approach and case study research design were employed in this study. It was identified that the majority of teachers’ productive skills proficiency level is categorized into the B1/B2 level of CEFR. Additionally, the mixed level of proficiency among PELTs is still apparent which can create issues regarding primary-students’ language development and the standard of proficiency level that PELTs should be. Therefore, by involving subject teachers' communities and the government, a standard of language proficiency for PELTs should be developed.

Abstract

Mobile microlearning has become an increasingly relevant pedagogical approach in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, particularly where learners exhibit fragmented study patterns and rely heavily on mobile devices for academic support. Although microlearning is widely adopted, its mechanisms for supporting long-term retention remain insufficiently theorized. Research tends to emphasize engagement and convenience rather than cognitively grounded task design. This study aims to examine the effects of three mobile microlearning task cycles, called spacing, retrieval practice, and mixed-strategy interleaving, on long-term retention among Indonesian EFL learners at Universitas Negeri Manado (UNIMA). A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was conducted with 98 Indonesian EFL learners at Universitas Negeri Manado. Participants were assigned to three treatment groups representing spacing, retrieval practice, and mixed-strategy interleaving task cycles and received daily microlearning activities via WhatsApp for eight weeks. Data were collected through pretests, posttests, delayed retention tests, learning analytics, and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using inferential statistics, while qualitative interview data were subjected to thematic analysis. The results indicate that mixed-strategy interleaving cycles produced significantly higher long-term retention compared to single-strategy cycles, along with more stable weekly participation. Additionally, the qualitative findings indicate that daily micro tasks reduce cognitive load, foster autonomous learning habits, and increase learners’ willingness to engage in incremental study. These findings suggest that the effectiveness of mobile microlearning depends not merely on brevity but on integrating cognitive learning principles into task design, with important implications for EFL pedagogy, digital task design, and mobile learning integration.

Abstract

The presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers various benefits in supporting the learning process and various other aspects of daily life. However, along with this convenience, there are also challenges and risks in its use, such as misuse of technology, violations of academic integrity, the dissemination of inaccurate information, and risks to personal data security. Therefore, educational efforts are needed to raise awareness among the academic community regarding the safe and responsible use of AI. This community service activity aims to increase the understanding of lecturers and students regarding the ethical, safe, and responsible use of AI in the academic environment. The activity was held on November 22, 2025, at Manado State University, involving 59 participants consisting of lecturers and students. The methods used were educational seminars, interactive discussions, and evaluation through pre- and post-tests. The results of the activity showed an increase in participant understanding, indicated by an increase in the average score from 55.53 (moderate category) in the pre-test to 62.10 (High Category) in the post-test. These findings indicate that the educational activities implemented are effective in increasing AI literacy and building awareness of the safe and responsible use of AI in the higher education environment. Therefore, similar programs need to be implemented on an ongoing basis to support the creation of a digital culture that is safe, ethical, and adaptive to technological developments.
