Abstract

the rise of Islamist narrative and agenda is found in the political parties categorized as Indonesian secular parties. None of them is an Islamist party, but the Islamist narratives seem prevalent. The role of ormass in vernacularizing seems significant since the Islamist interest was discovered as the policy product and a trend in Indonesian Muslims, especially the millennials. Seeing the proliferation, the political party might compromise with the broader market of the constituency. Meanwhile, the assumption that NU and Muhammadiyah as the antidotes of Islamic radicalism might not a hundred percent correct since they show a weakening of their influence within their members. It can be seen from the neglect of the fatwas issued, advice, and their prohibitions by both NU and Muhammadiyah member. Besides, the presence of the MUI, which is fully supported by the government in issuing fatwas, has actually created controversy because the fatwa issued was mostly accommodated by the Islamist Agenda. This condition is reinforced by the membership recruitment system as well as applying the equal quota system even some of them are from NU and Muhammadiyah that possess the most significant mass base. The recruitment system certainly makes it easier for extremists to control and dominate the membership of MUI. Some moderate Islamic scholars who criticized the action of defending Islam reaped ridicule and bullies from the demonstrators. On the other hand, they continue to appraise Rizieq Syihab as a central figure in the Islamic defense action. The descriptions above illustrate that the dominance of Islamic radicalism in Indonesia, which I consider a threat to the progress of Indonesian Democracy. The above claims were revealed after some comprehensive research through the data that were collected from some related literature, magazines, jounals, and other sources. The data is analysed from the phenomenon happened which were compared to the current reality in some places which can be confirm through the electronic or non-electronic media. These are the claims from the writers which need further analysis.

Abstract

The need for learning English as a foreign language is rising due to the interconnectedness of today's globe, where English is the universal language of academics, commerce, entertainment, and culture. This has raised interest in the automatic approach to evaluating spoken language competency. In this sense, learning grammar is one of the most important components of language competency. This study aims to analyze the grammatical speaking errors made by the second-year Universitas Bumigora students learning English as a foreign language in the Speaking 3 course. The methodology involves a qualitative research design using the surface strategy taxonomy to analyze and classify the data collected from 20 English literature students. The errors are categorized into omission, addition, disordering, and selection. The types of errors identified include plural and singular nouns, subject-verb agreement, part-of-speech word orders, regular and irregular verb usage, and word order. Data were obtained through two cycles; in the first cycle, the participants receive feedback on their errors, and their insight on the errors is also considered in cycle 2. Data analysis on both cycles reveals that there were significant errors in singular and plural pronoun usage of above 20%; the subject-verb agreement has an increasing percentage of errors (4.16%) after being given feedback on the first cycle; part of speech has significantly lower errors (8.03% and 1.09%); the usage of articles is similar to subject-verb agreement errors, there was slight increasing percentage of errors (1.8% and 0.20%). Thus, the data revealed that learners are significantly influenced by both the interference of their first language and the challenges inherent in acquiring a second language. Therefore, errors in spoken articulation still existed, though learners were able to comprehend the grammar in written text.

Abstract

There are differences of opinion arising from the results of research on the use of WhatsApp in ELT. The results revealed that the use of WhatsApp software contributed positively to the development of English writing proficiency, and the other results considered that the use of WhatsApp has many weaknesses and difficulties in writing and other language instructions. This controversy allowed the researcher to conduct research aimed at finding out whether there was a correlation between the use of WhatsApp as a tool in writing activities and EFL student writing performance and to find out how close the relationship between the two variables is. The statistical correlation from Pearson Product Moment revealed that the correlation of the independent variable (X) with the dependent variable (Y) showed a sig. value of 0.000 < 0.05, and the correlation rate was very strong with a correlation coefficient (r = 0.832), along with the hypothesis tested showing Ho: ?1 ? 0. This study shows a very strong correlation between the use of WhatsApp as a tool in English writing activities and writing performance. WhatsApp interventions into ELT in the form of group WhatsApp and individual WhatsApp’s text message interactions have contributed to EFL students’ writing skills as the correlation of two variables goes parallel. The more students do the writing activity through WhatsApp, the higher the writing achievement they acquire.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of Kahoot, a game-based learning platform, in enhancing motivation for learning grammar among university students. Recognizing the challenges faced by non-native English speakers in mastering grammar, the study explores the potential of gamification as an innovative teaching approach. A survey method was employed to collect data from 10 English university students using both structured and unstructured questionnaires. The findings reveal that Kahoot significantly enhances student motivation, engagement, and enjoyment in learning grammar. Students report higher satisfaction and improved understanding of grammar concepts compared to traditional teaching methods. However, the study highlights challenges, such as increased anxiety due to the competitive atmosphere and technical issues like internet connectivity. These results suggest that while Kahoot is an effective tool for grammar instruction, careful implementation is required to address its limitations and optimize its effectiveness. This research offers valuable insights for educators and researchers seeking to harness technology to improve grammar learning outcomes

Abstract

In the evolving landscape of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) education, integrating computational thinking (CT) offers a systematic approach to addressing the cognitive and analytical challenges posed by technical texts. This study investigates the impact of CT strategies—decomposition, pattern recognition, and abstraction—on enhancing ESP learners’ reading comprehension and problem-solving skills. A classroom action research (CAR) framework was employed with second-semester management and engineering students at Universitas Bumigora. A mixed-methods approach combined pre- and post-tests, classroom observations, and reflective journals to measure outcomes and capture qualitative insights. The results revealed significant improvements, with reading comprehension scores rising from 59% to 79% and problem-solving scores increasing from 59% to 80.1%. Large effect sizes (Cohen’s d > 1.1) underscored the efficacy of CT strategies. Qualitative findings highlighted increased student confidence, effective use of decomposition and pattern recognition, and the transferability of skills to other contexts. However, challenges with abstraction persisted, indicating a need for additional scaffolding and instructional support. These findings demonstrate the potential of CT to bridge linguistic and analytical gaps in ESP education. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts and expand the application of CT across diverse ESP fields and teaching methodologies.

Abstract

The Sasak tribe is categorized as one of the multilingual speakers that exist in Indonesia who speak Bahasa Indonesia and Sasak Language (SL). The SL has two speech levels: Sasak Jamaq (SJ) for the lower level and Sasak Alus (SA) for the upper one. Along with social considerations, people's multilingual practice may differ from urban and rural settings in the Lombok region. This research aims to investigate the multilingual practice along with the factors that influence language choice in educational, casual conversation, and traditional gatherings domains within both rural and urban areas around Lombok. This research used a descriptive qualitative method employing the ethnographic research approach to collect data. Participants were categorized based on specific events that were taking place such as sorong serah events (traditional gatherings), Car-free days (casual conversations), and educational activities on campus. It turns out that the multilingual practice in the two settings (urban and rural) has the same pattern on how SA is becoming extinct. The linguistic endangerment has been caused by the widespread disregard shown by both non-royal descendants and meritocratic households. Furthermore, the limited domain is accessible for usage as a communication tool due to language policy, which incorporates Bahasa Indonesia in numerous formal contexts and excludes SA from school curricula. Furthermore, the domain is the biggest matter in how they choose a language to communicate as well as the topic, interlocutor identities, social status, and politeness.
