Abstract

Abstract: In the last ten years, studies of the representation of moral values in English textbooks have been growing. However, little empirical evidence reveals the use of speech acts to represent moral values through utterances. This study aims to investigate the representation of moral values depicted through utterances in English textbooks for elementary school grades 2 and 5 in Indonesia. By adopting a socio-cognitive critical discourse analysis (Van Dijk, 2015) framework integrated with Searle’s (1969) speech acts, this qualitative study elucidates the representation of moral values only in the verbal text. The data were analyzed by applying several steps, including unitizing, sampling, recording/coding, reducing, inferring, and narrating. The findings of this study showed that curiosity, honesty, and friendliness are the most dominant moral values depicted in two English textbooks for elementary schools in Indonesia.  Dialogue/conversation, chapter cover, and instruction for students’ activity are the strategies to promote moral values in the textbooks. This study implies that teachers and textbook writers should provide students with more examples of moral values, particularly those related to daily life communication.

Abstract

Previous English for Specific Purposes (ESP) studies have focused on examining relevant ELT learning materials within universities, with less attention given to vocational senior high schools. This study examined the relevance of ESP materials in an Indonesian vocational high school of pharmacy, as perceived by students. This narrative research in Central Java involved 30 twelfth-grade participants who shared their perspectives on genres, learning activities, and assessment through narrative frames and follow-up interviews. Thematic analysis revealed that many students found the ESP learning materials irrelevant to their specific needs within the pharmacy field. Discussions highlighted the students' desire for enhanced communicative competence to serve patients better, explain medicine usage, and comprehend medical prescriptions. The study suggests implementing communicative language teaching techniques to improve students' communicative competence and use of specialized vocabulary. Despite challenges with pronunciation and grammar, students demonstrated overall comprehension of the materials. In sum, this study offers valuable insights for curriculum designers and teachers in vocational senior high schools seeking to create more effective ESP learning materials.

Abstract

Effective teaching relies heavily on solid communication and meaningful interaction between teachers and students. These elements create an environment where students are more engaged and motivated, leading to better learning outcomes. One way to enhance this interaction is through Creative Problem-Solving (CPS), which incorporates creativity into the teaching process. CPS encourages students to think imaginatively, collaborate, and apply knowledge dynamically, fostering a more engaging and interactive classroom environment. This study aims to investigate how Creative Problem-Solving (CPS) facilitates teacher-student interaction patterns by applying the Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) theory in an EFL classroom at a state university in Indonesia. The study involved 46 pre-service teachers, six males and 40 females, all fifth-semester undergraduate students enrolled in the Curriculum and Material Development course. Data collection methods included deep interviews and classroom observations. The research revealed that pre-service teachers faced challenges with CPS projects, especially those involving telecollaboration. However, they valued the lecturer's guidance and feedback, which played a crucial role in helping them overcome these difficulties and complete the tasks. Thus, to maximize the benefits of CPS, lecturers must provide a clear understanding of CPS principles, as it is a relatively new approach for many pre-service teachers. Additionally, encouraging pre-service teachers to seek guidance and actively engage in collaborative activities can enhance their critical thinking and overall learning experience.

Abstract

Despite the mandatory inclusion of English in higher education, the limited credit hours and students’ varying proficiency levels pose challenges to achieving English language teaching goals. CSR offers a structured approach to enhance reading comprehension through its four stages. While numerous studies have explored CSR’s effectiveness, its application in higher education remains under-researched, particularly for TOEFL preparation. This qualitative study involved three female instructors of a TOEFL preparation course in an Islamic state university which were chosen by convenience sampling. It employs in-depth interviews to examine their beliefs in teaching using CSR for non-English major students in a TOEFL preparation course. The data were analyzed thematically by using deductive coding. The findings revealed that instructors consciously believe in the benefits of CSR for TOEFL preparation. Their beliefs are largely relevant to the theory of CSR, with collaborative learning as a core value and combined with personalized learning to create a positive learning environment that supports students' reading comprehension and readiness for TOEFL preparation. The result of this can inform instructional strategies and enhance students' reading comprehension abilities for standardized testing and other assessments, particularly in higher education contexts. Future research may continue to explore the nuances of CSR implementation within a larger scope and more diverse sample to enhance generalizability, or incorporate a mixed-method approach to provide a more holistic view of CSR among educators and students.

Abstract

Translanguaging has been recognized to help students learn a second language, yet many lecturers still see it as a problem rather than a useful educational tool. This study looks at the impact of translanguaging approaches on the confidence of Indonesian vocational college students in using English, with a focus mainly on the students' perspectives. The research used a qualitative case study to observe a class of 30 students (13 male and 17 female) in an English for Vocational Purposes (EVP) course. Four students, two females and two males were purposefully chosen for semi-structured interviews to get deeper perspectives. Data from these observations and interviews were evaluated thematically to better understand how translanguaging improves communication, strengthens teacher-student relationships, and assists in the processing of instructional materials. The findings indicate that students hold a positive attitude toward translanguaging pedagogies, citing benefits such as improved knowledge development, enhanced vocabulary acquisition, stronger relationships with lecturers, and increased Willingness to Communicate (WTC) in English. The study emphasizes that translanguaging facilitates English language learning and acknowledges and embraces the linguistic diversity of Indonesian classrooms. This research provides important information for policymakers, educators, and researchers on how utilizing translanguaging in EFL teaching approaches can be essential in creating a more inclusive and effective learning atmosphere, especially in diverse educational settings.

Abstract

English language learning in primary schools still needs more attention, especially regarding teacher training in designing effective lesson plans. Many teachers do not have an English language education background and have never received training in designing English language learning activities, so they have difficulty developing materials that meet students' needs. This study aims to determine how primary school teachers develop and implement English language learning activities in the classroom. This study used a qualitative approach with data collection through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The research subjects were two primary school teachers with a classroom teacher education background and teaching experience of 6 and 11 years respectively. The results showed that the teachers developed learning by watching learning videos and consulting with more experienced colleagues as a form of initiative and creativity in dealing with limited competencies and resources. They also face challenges in adapting methods to different student learning styles and managing limited learning time. Observations show that although the implementation of lesson plans is going according to plan, there are still problems with student participation, understanding of the material, and the effectiveness of activities, so adjustments to teaching strategies are needed. This study highlights the importance of sustained and equitable professional development so that all teachers, including those without an English education background, are able to teach adaptively and effectively in diverse classrooms.

Abstract

In today's educational system, the need for teachers to acquire technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) has already become a mainstream transformation. Therefore, it is necessary to find a suitable strategy and approach to develop pre-service ELT teachers’ TPACK, in which one of them is actively engaging them in the design of technology-enhanced learning. This study sought to investigate Indonesian pre-service ELT teachers’ TPACK level development after designing digital storytelling book. Narrative inquiry was adopted in this research. The data were obtained from the pre- service ELT teachers’ reflective notes and semi-structured interviews. The findings of the study show that all participants are in the TPACK level of “accepting”. In the level of accepting, pre-service teachers form a favorable attitude toward teaching and learning English with digital storytelling. The implication derived from this study is that it is necessary to carefully design a project in teacher education program that can improve the pre-service teachers' TPACK level.

Abstract

In Indonesian multilingual classrooms, students come to the classrooms with the ability to speak more than one language. Previous studies have highlighted that teachers should view the languages as resources for learning, instead of problems. In this context, translanguaging emerges as a relevant and pedagogical approach to be implemented. This study investigates the perceptions of three Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers about translanguaging, the kinds of translanguaging that they implemented, and the ways they dealt with the challenges. A case study was employed, with the data collected through a series of semi-structured interviews and multiple classroom observations from three purposely sampling EFL teachers. Thematic analysis was applied to identify the patterns in the data. Findings reveal that teachers viewed translanguaging positively, as it aided comprehension and improved students’ confidence by providing linguistic support in students' native language. The forms of translanguaging included translation, code-switching, code-mixing, and transliteration, with code-mixing being the most frequent and transliteration was not found. All these findings highlight the importance of implementing translanguaging pedagogical strategies that actively promote multilingualism in the classrooms. This study offers the ways in which teachers could implement such strategies and provides directions for further research.
