Abstract

Abstract

The shape of marine protected areas (MPAs) aimed for fisheries goals should be small enough to allow for spillover of adult fished species as well as larval and juvenile fished species. Such consideration was applied during the establishment of Liang-Ngali Island MPA in West Nusa Tenggara (WNT), Indonesia, which was mainly developed to support fisheries activities around it. In WNT, biologically diverse coastal and marine ecosystems have been utilized by local residents to support their livelihoods, mainly through fisheries and tourism activities. Aside from being a home for unique habitat such as mangrove forest, seagrass beds, and coral reef, Liang and Ngali Island also shows indication of spawning aggregation sites for reef fishes such as groupers and snappers. In 2016, the government of WNT Province designated both islands as marine protected areas under the category of marine recreational park. Following the Governor Decree, a management and zonation plan of Liang-Ngali MPA was then developed by engaging stakeholders from multiple institutions. In the framework of ecosystem approach to fisheries management, the existence of MPA provides strong instrument to support the sustainability of fish resources as well as maintaining continuous livelihood for surrounding coastal communities.

Abstract

The Pulau Panjang Marine Conservation Area is among the designated conservation zones based on the Decree of the Governor of West Nusa Tenggara No. 523-505 Year 2016. Pulau Panjang boasts a diverse marine ecosystem including mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs, holding significant economic value, particularly in the capture fisheries sector. This study employed a survey method utilizing both primary and secondary data. The research focused on the villages of Labuhan Mapin, Labuhan Burung, Pulau Kaung, and Pulau Bungin, with the research subjects being heads of fishermen households, considering their engagement in activities within the Pulau Panjang Conservation Area. Most of the population comprises indigenous residents over 40, representing diverse ethnicities such as the Bajo, Bugis, Mandar, and Bira, among others. The fishermen community's education level is relatively low, mostly limited to primary education. Their monthly income ranges between Rp. 1,000,000 – 7,000,000, with an average monthly income of Rp. 2,957,594.00. Monthly expenses vary between Rp. 930,000 – 3,850,000 with an average of Rp. 2,273,767. The community's knowledge regarding marine resource regulations (fisheries) is reasonably good, except for the regulation prohibiting fishing in certain areas, which remains less known among the population. Overall, socio-economic factors insignificantly influence the understanding of Marine Resources within the TWP Pulau Panjang region.

Abstract

The mangrove ecosystems in Labuhan Kuris Village, Lape Subdistrict, Sumbawa Regency are degraded. The area of mangrove ecosystems is categorized as good; it has decreased, potentially impacting the decline in fisheries' productivity, global warming, and other effects. This community service activity aims to rehabilitate mangroves through education and mangrove planting. The stages of this activity include an initial survey of community knowledge (pre-test) regarding mangroves, education and discussion sessions (talk shows), mangrove planting, and monitoring and evaluation. Meanwhile, the target audience for this activity is adult community members. Interviews using questionnaires were conducted to assess the community's initial understanding of mangroves. An educational session on the roles of mangroves was conducted by providing materials and distributing stickers about the roles of mangroves, and sessions. An evaluation of understanding levels was performed through post-tests, while monitoring and evaluation were conducted using direct observation methods in the field. Post-test results showed that 88% of the target audience understand the function of mangroves, 96% stated that mangroves ' role is to protect fish and crabs, while only 60% answered that mangroves have roles in climate mitigation. The number of participants in the educational session was 50 people. The mangrove species planted was Rhizophora sp. On this occasion, 1000 mangrove seedlings were planted, and the number of community members involved in mangrove planting was 220. Monitoring and evaluation results indicated that some plants were damaged due to trampling by livestock. Thus, mitigation was done by fencing around the planting area. Overall, the community actively participated from the beginning to the end of the activities. This condition indicates that the community is highly concerned about mangrove management. However, community participation in mangrove management should be improved.
