Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of double staging in the self-presentation practices of gym members, which takes place in physical spaces and continues into social media spaces. The fitness activities carried out by StrongGym members are not only interpreted as exercise routines, but also as a means of building and displaying self-identity through the body, appearance, and accompanying communication activities. The gym space functions as a front stage where individuals display their self-image directly, while Instagram Stories becomes an extension of the stage that allows individuals to manage and curate their visual self- representation. The results of the study show that self-representation in physical and digital spaces are interconnected in shaping the social identity of gym members. The experience of exercising at the gym is the main basis for selecting content to be displayed on Instagram Stories, but digital representations tend to show the best moments that have gone through a selection process. In addition, communication activities that take place in both spaces have different characteristics, where face-to-face communication in the gym is direct and interactive, while communication in the digital space is symbolic and representational through visuals, text, and audience responses. These findings confirm that the self-presentation practices of gym members reflect Erving Goffman's concept of dramaturgy, in which individuals consciously manage their impressions in front of different audiences in different contexts.

Abstract

In the digital era and with the advancement of information technology, learning through online platforms has become increasingly significant in the field of education. Online learning offers flexibility, broader access to educational resources, and more varied interactions. However, the effectiveness of online learning is often influenced by the communication patterns used in the process. This study aims to analyze the communication patterns and forms in online-based learning at Universitas Terbuka (UT), a distance education institution in Indonesia. UT provides access to higher education for individuals who face challenges accessing formal education in conventional universities due to various constraints such as geographical location, employment, or time limitations. The method used in this study is a qualitative-descriptive approach, with in-depth interviews and observations as the primary data collection techniques. The results indicate that the communication patterns implemented at UT are dominated by Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), involving the use of e-learning platforms for asynchronous and synchronous communication. These findings suggest that the use of CMC at UT not only facilitates flexible and responsive interactions but also supports the continuity of the teaching and learning process in a distance education environment.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the representation of moral messages portrayed in the animated film Jumbo (2025) using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. The study focuses on how visual and verbal signs are constructed to convey moral meanings through symbols, characters, and conflicts within the narrative structure. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, utilizing Peirce’s semiotic method to examine the relationship between sign, object, and interpretant in selected key scenes. The results reveal that Jumbo represents moral values emphasizing empathy, courage, and self-acceptance in the face of social injustice. Visual symbols such as color, facial expressions, and body gestures serve as significant signs that communicate universal moral meanings. The main character, Don, functions as an icon of sincerity and moral bravery, transforming from a timid boy into a figure who courageously defends goodness. Meanwhile, his internal and external conflicts symbolize human moral struggles between altruism and egoism.Through Peirce’s semiotic analysis, the study concludes that Jumbo not only offers entertainment but also delivers a profound social reflection on humanity and moral education. The film illustrates that every individual possesses moral strength to overcome rejection and discover courage through acts of kindness. Keywords: Semiotics, Charles Sanders Peirce, Animated Film Jumbo, Moral Message, Symbolism.
