Universitas Kristen Wira Wacana Sumba is one of the universities that organizes online learning. This happened as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation requires all lecturers to be able to conduct online learning by utilizing the available facilities, namely Google Classroom and Google Meet, both permanent and adjunct lecturers. Abstract

Discussions of the second language (L2) pedagogy have been studied not only in the language and education fields. Experts working in the psychology field also propose theories on applied linguistics because L2 acquisitions involve external and internal processes. However, despite numerous studies on the field, it appears that an issue regarding the use of first language (L1) still creates continuous debates. Although arguments opposing the use of first L1 present compelling theories as to their rationale, they appear to overlook the context in which teaching and learning process takes place. The studies were either conducted in English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL), where teachers are native speakers who do not share the same L1 with students. Considering the uniqueness in classroom contexts, this paper is not going to argue or take sides on the conflicting views on the use of L1. Instead, it attempts to acknowledge the gap of the context in language teaching used in previous studies. Using a sociocultural theory, this article will describe the beneficial use of L1 with a focus on its use by teachers in an EFL context where teachers share the same L1 with students. Keywords: first language, English as a Foreign Language, sociocultural theory

Abstract

Although the government has accommodated English to be included in the realm of local content, a number of obstacles including the limited number of teachers and funds have resulted in the implementation of the introduction of English being not optimal. Similar problems occur in the Kambera language which has not yet become a part of education in East Sumba, especially in urban areas. Seeing the importance of using English and local languages in schools both as the language of instruction and as part of subjects, the solution that must be taken is to include elements of regional languages in learning in elementary schools. This Community Service activity aims to introduce English and Kambera, as the local languages of East Sumba, to elementary school students in Waingapu through the names of vegetables presented through posters. The method of implementing this activity begins with qualitative data collection and analysis. There are 50 kinds of vegetables which are divided into 3 major groups of vegetables, namely root and tuber vegetables, seed and fruit vegetables, and leaf and stem vegetables, which are then presented in 5 posters. The results of this activity indicate that not all students in every school have good English skills because it has not been implemented in the curriculum, then students do not have knowledge of the Kambera language which is a local language in East Sumba due to lack of early introduction. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the introduction and improvement of English and Kambera language skills in the community needs to be carried out on an ongoing basis. The poster media used in this activity can also support the sustainability of this activity because it can still be used as a learning medium in other schools.

Abstract

East Sumba is well known for its ikat weaving, among other cultural tourism potentials. As a cultural legacy, attempts are required to introduce ikat to an enormous scope nationwide and globally. Unfortunately, the ikat has only been presented through occasional festivals or exhibitions. Another challenge is that there need to be more archives containing information about ikat in English. Therefore, to address the challenges, this community outreach activity aims to introduce ikat to a broader audience by designing a catalog in bahasa Indonesia and English. The catalog contains information, including patterns, materials, and philosophical meanings of East Sumba ikat, and was distributed to eight galleries in Waingapu, which are the leading destinations for domestic and international tourists visiting East Sumba. In addition, two catalogues were distributed to the tourism office as the library collection and archive to allow access to the public who need information about ikat.

Abstract

Linguistic studies show that half of the world's languages ??are on the verge of extinction, meaning they are no longer passed down to younger generations. One of the causes of language extinction is the minimum number and quality of documentation of local languages. Therefore, maintaining language as a form of preserving the culture of a society is very important. This research was conducted to document the Kambera language, especially the fauna lexicon including the names of livestock, poultry, and non-livestock or other wild animals in East Sumba. The aim of this research is to produce a list or inventory of the fauna in the Kamberan language. The results of this research are expected to become a form of language documentation for the Kambera language in order to support language maintenance. This research is a lexicological study that uses qualitative methods and data collection is done through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the equivalent method with the determinant being the referent and another language, namely Indonesian. The results of the data analysis found 60 names of fauna and grouped by type of fauna, (1) livestock, (2) poultry, (3) birds (birds), (4) pets, (5) animals that live in water, (6) reptiles, and (7) other animals.
