Abstract

This research aims to dissect the way to solve land burning in Indonesia through "proper roads" which is a way that is in accordance with procedures or through "shortcuts" which is a direct way to the core problem. The scope of this writing covers legal, political, economic and socio-cultural aspects. The method used is descriptive analysis with the perspective of a rule of law that emphasizes sovereignty based on Pancasila, specifically the 5th precept, namely social justice for all the people of Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that land burning is mostly carried out by companies rather than the community. This continues because of the weak application of the law, both because of the limited resources of law enforcement officials and long and long-winded procedures. Cost efficiency factors are the main reason for burning and the view of burning land is common and has been done for generations. Settlement through the "proper way" by firmly enforcing the existing rules, Giving a deterrent effect to the perpetrators of forest fires through administrative, civil, criminal and disciplinary sanctions. Completion of "short cut" with a preventive approach (preventive) and non-court (non litigation). The conclusion of this paper is that each path has rationalization, consequences and benefits. The choice of road is an agreement from the executive, legislative and judiciary at the state, provincial and district levels.

Abstract

The world sugar industries had experienced fluctuation over the past decades. In the recent time, sugar consumption increased rapidly while the production reduced gradually. This condition is also augmented by international agreement in WTO through modalities draft, which was created on July 2008. This draft required the parties to follow the tariff reduction formula and eliminate non- tariff measures that are inconsistent with WTO agreements. Nevertheless, the developing countries have been proposed the proposal to protect the sensitive sectors comprises sugar, rice, corn, and soybeans for exclusion from WTO trade liberalization. This article intends to analyse sugar trade policy in Indonesia. Sugar is one of strategic industrial commodity products in Indonesia that had enjoyed the progressive enhancement during the 1930s. However, it became deteriorated recently due to the declining of production while the demands rose dramatically. This article argues that soaring consumption, poor infrastructures and high production cost have triggered a significant increase in sugar import. This in turn only benefits the sugar importers.

Abstract

This paper attempts to describe the competitive implications of the United States and China in global climate governance. It is important to discuss because China and the United States have been in intense competition in recent years. Besides, the United States decided to leave the Paris Agreement to provide space for China to become a leader in the government and strengthen its influence in the international world. China's active role certainly has implications for its competition with the United States. This paper uses qualitative methods with secondary data sources. The findings of this paper are that China's influence and commitment to the Paris Agreement show that China has the potential to become a leader. However, its status as the largest developing country in the regime shows that China has not chosen to be a hegemon. This choice opens an opportunity for the United States to take the lead on climate change issues again.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of hybrid governance in Indonesia’s nation branding practices through the 2023 M4 World Championship. The global esports tournament was organized by Moonton as a multinational private company, while the Indonesian government acted as a facilitator through policy support, institutional legitimacy, and symbolic involvement. This study employed an interpretivist qualitative approach with a single-case study strategy. Data were collected from policy documents, official press releases, government statements, organizer publications, and credible media coverage. Previous studies still limited research that specifically analyzes the 2023 M4 World Championship as a global esports event organized by a multinational corporation from the perspective of hybrid governance. This study addresses that gap by examining how the interaction between state and private actors constructs nation branding practices in Indonesia within a hybrid governance structure. The findings show that Indonesia’s nation branding through M4 was formed within a hybrid governance configuration. Moonton controlled the operational and production aspects of the event, while the state utilized the event as a strategic platform to project Indonesia’s national image. Indonesia was represented through narratives and symbols emphasizing modernity, tourism, digital entertainment, and the creative economy. The novelty of this study lies in its use of hybrid governance theory to explain nation branding practices in global esports events managed primarily by multinational private actors. This research demonstrates that nation branding in the digital era is no longer fully state-led, but emerges through collaborative governance between governments and global corporations in transnational digital spaces.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the practices of multiculturalism in the everyday lives of Orang Suku Laut (OSL), Bajo, and Bugis communities in Kawal, a coastal area inhabited by diverse ethnic groups with distinct cultural backgrounds, livelihoods, and social histories. The transition of OSL from a highly mobile maritime lifestyle to a more settled way of life has significantly influenced social relations and identity construction within this multiethnic community. This research utilized a qualitative approach, specifically employing a case study method. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with members of the OSL, Bajo, and Bugis communities, and documentary analysis. The study was informed by theories of multiculturalism and identity negotiation, particularly Fredrik Barth’s concept of ethnic boundaries and Homi K. Bhabha’s notion of the third space. The findings reveal that multiculturalism in Kawal is primarily manifested through everyday social interactions, economic cooperation, and the mutual adaptation of cultural values among ethnic groups. Identity negotiation emerges as a crucial strategy through which OSL maintains its cultural existence while adapting to the dynamic realities of multiethnic life.

Abstract

This study analyzes the placement of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) through the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) programme in Japan during 2019–2024 using Michael J. Piore’s Dual Labour Market Theory. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach and library research method based on secondary data from academic literature, government publications, policy documents, and official statistics from Indonesia and Japan. The findings indicate that PMI placement increased substantially from 3,061 workers in 2019 to 44,298 workers in 2024, following a temporary decline during the COVID-19 period. In 2024, Indonesian workers were concentrated in elderly care, food and beverage processing, agriculture, industrial manufacturing, construction, and fisheries. These sectors share characteristics associated with the secondary labour market, including labour shortages, demanding working conditions, and relatively limited attractiveness to domestic workers. Japan’s ageing population and declining working-age population contributed to persistent structural labour demand, while Indonesia provided a significant supply of workers through bilateral labour cooperation. The findings support the applicability of Dual Labour Market Theory in explaining PMI placement through SSW as a structural response to labour shortages in Japan.
