Abstract

PRIATNA, D.; KARTAWINATA, K.; ABDULHADI, R. 2004. Recovery of a lowland dipterocarp forest twenty two years after selective logging at Sekundur, Gunung Leuser National Park, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Reinwardtia 12 (3): 237–255. — A permanent 2-ha plot of lowland forest selectively logged in 1978 at Sekundur, Gunung Leuser National Park, which is also a Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site, North Sumatra, was established and investigated in 1982. It was re-examined in 2000, where remeasurement and reidentification of all trees with DBH =10 cm were made. The areas of gap, building and mature phases of the canopy were also measured and mapped. Within this plot, 133 species, 87 genera and 39 families were recorded, with the total number of trees of 1145 or density of 572.5/ha. Euphorbiaceae was the richest family with 18 species (13.5 % of the total) and total number of trees of 248 (21.7 % of the total or density of 124 trees/ha.The most important families were Dipterocarpaceae with IV (Importance Value) = 52.0, followed by Euphorbiaceae with IV = 51.8. The most prevalent species was Shorea kunstleri (Dipterocarpaceae) with IV =24.4, followed by Macaranga diepenhorstii (Euphorbiaceae) with IV = 12.4. They were the species with highest density, 34 trees/ha and 23.5 trees/ha, respectively. During the period of 18 years there has been no shift in the richest families, most importantfamilies and most important species. Euphorbiaceae was the richest family and Dipterocarpaceae was the most important family, with Shorea kunstleri as the most important species with highest importance value throughout the period. The number of species increased from 127 to 133 with increase in density by 36.8% , from 418.5 trees/ha to 572.5 trees/ha. The mortality was 25.57 % or 1.4 % per year. The diameter class distribution indicated that the forest recovery has not been complete. Trees were small, comprising 67.6 % with diameters of 10-20 cm and only two trees had diameters of 100 cm, i.e.Melanochyla caesia and Lithocarpus urceolaris. Based on the basal area of all species, the logged-over forest at Sekundur is estimated to reach the situation similar to undisturbed primary forest in 56 years after logging, but on the basis of basal area of Dipterocarpaceae such condition could be achieved in 172 years. The canopy has not fully recovered and the complete closure of gaps is estimated to take 53 years since the logging started. The canopy consisted of gap phase (24.6 %), building phase (19.7 %) and mature phase (55.7 %). During the period of 18 years the tree mortality was 25.57 % or the rate of 1.4 %/year.Euphorbiaceae experienced the highest mortality, particularly among the trees with diameters of 10-20 cm.Mortality decreased with the increase of diameters.During the same period 520 new trees of 16 species were recruited. The densities of 53 % of the species experienced changes of only one tree or no changes at all.Drastic increase in tree population occurred in light demanding species, such as Baccaurea kunstleri, Endospermum diadenum,Mallotus penangensis,Sapium baccatum and Macaranga diepenhorstii .

Abstract

Although translocation has been used in mitigating human-carnivore conflict for decades, few studies have been conducted on the behavioral ecology of released animals. Such information is necessary in the context of sustainable forest management. In this study we determine the type of land cover used as main habitat and examine the activity pattern of translocated tigers. Between 2008 and 2010 we captured six conflict tigers and translocated them 74-1,350 km from their capture sites in Sumatera. All tigers were fitted with global positioning system (GPS) collars. The collars were set to fix 24-48 location coordinates per day. All translocated tigers showed a preference for a certain habitat type within their new home range, and tended to select the majority of natural land cover type within the landscape as their main habitat, but the availability of natural forest habitat within the landscape remains essensial for their survival. The activity of male translocated tigers differed significantly between the six time intervals of 24 hours, and their most active periods were in the afternoon (14:00-18:00 hours) and in the evening (18:00-22:00 hours). Despite being preliminary, the findings of this study-which was the first such study conducted in Sumatera-highlight the conservation value of tiger translocation and provide valuable information for improving future management of conflict tigers.

Abstract

Elephant Riding (ER) in zoos has become a matter of public interest, raising debates among experts regarding animal ethics, elephants’ welfare, and human safety. Through the submission of the Middle Hypothesis that ER tends to enhance human knowledge about conservation, this study’s aim is to provide strategies to help zoo managements in their works  based on the basic principles of wildlife conservation and protection, especially Sumatran elephants. The participants’ knowledge was measured using questionnaires distributed to two groups of respondents: people who have and people who have not utilized ER services. Meanwhile, the strategy was recommended through the Analytical Hierarchy Process of 17 expert respondents. According to the independent sample t-test performed with  95% confidence level, human knowledge of elephant conservation increased significantly through ER. Furthermore, experts with consistency ratios (CR) ≤ 0.1 selected a strategy where environmental quality was prioritized as a recommended strategy in ER management. This strategy is to put forward the principles guaranteeing the elephants’ welfare, which has a criterion weight of 0.40717. The other recommended strategies include conducting conservation education (0.23973), ensuring the safety of visitors (0.22972), and improving the welfare of the community around zoo (0.12338).

Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACTResearch on biodiversity and carbon sinks is still needed by the government to support policies in order to manage forests sustainably. The purpose of this study was to analyze the composition of species, stand structure, biomass and carbon sinks on peat-swamps in Bukit Batu, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province. The research method was carried out with an inventory of vegetation to determine the potential of stands, rejuvenation, biomass and carbon sinks. Sample plots were taken randomly in the form of measuring plots of 100 m x 100 m in each condition of old secondary forest, young secondary forest and old scrub forest in the peat-swamp protection forest. The species commonly found and evenly spread in all conditions of the peat-swamp forest were Gymnacranthera paniculata, Shorea teysmanniana, and Shorea gibbosa. The structure of the third stand condition of the peatswamp forest was still like a peat-swamp natural forest with the structure of the curve was in the shape of an inverted letter “J.” The three conditions of the peat-swamp forests have high biomass and carbon deposits with the highest content of those that were found in the old secondary forests, and the lowest was in the old scrub forests. The condition of the old secondary  forests has the highest potential to absorb carbon dioxide in the air. The tree species that are potentially used as seed sources were S. teysmanniana, S. gibbosa and Diospyros maingayi.

Abstract

The ecosystem restoration conservation partnership program is a new policy from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry which aims to reduce conflicts due to forest land use in conservation areas. Gunung Halimun Salak National Park (GHSNP) is one of the conservation areas facing tenure conflicts, particularly in the Gunung Botol Resort area, where there are people who have lived and cultivated the land for decades, long before the Decree of the Designation of the GHSNP was issued. In an effort to address tenurial conflicts in Malasari Village, which is one of the villages within the management area of Gunung Botol Resort, the community took the initiative to collaborate with the GHSNP manager through a scheme called ecosystem restoration conservation partnership. This study aims to formulate a strategy for developing an ecosystem restoration conservation partnership in GHSNP by using a qualitative approach which is presented in a descriptive form. Data were analyzed using SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) technique. The results of the study indicate that the ecosystem restoration conservation partnership program is recommended to be implemented by utilizing existing strengths and opportunities, as well as developed through synergy and collaboration that involves multi-stakeholders.

Abstract

Forest restoration is needed to improve the condition of degraded ecosystems and boost up the ecological services. The existence of forest areas, especially in Indonesia, cannot be separated from the livelihoods of the people living around them. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the feasabiluty of the community-based forest restoration programme, implemented by the Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park Agency (BBGGPNP) and its partners, is feasible and can support efforts to restore forest ecosystem functioning and build community independence in managing the forest ecosystem. This study used the Context, Input, Process and Product (CIPP) method. This is an evaluation model which provides an analytical and rational basis for programme decision-making, based on a cycle of planning, structuring, implementing and reviewing and revising decisions, examined through a different aspect of evaluation –context, input, process and product evaluation. Data were obtained from field observations, interviews and document analysis. Aspects of the programme ‘Context’ were found to be categorized as good and can become the basis for programme implementation, Programme ‘Inputs’ were also determined to be good, and fulfilled the criteria required to support the achievement of programme objectives. The ‘Process’ aspects were found to be sufficient, with key areas for improvement included the need for better coordination with partners and the need to respond to technical restoration requirements by adjusting the area of land to be restored, the number of trees to be planted, and by considering the technical rule of restoration. The ‘Product’ aspect of the programme were shown to be good, is shown by the achievement of the target amount and growth of trees and the increased capacity of human resources as well as the development of independent businesses in the ex-encroachers who were the programme participants. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the community-based forest restoration programme such as conducted by the GGPNP Agency is feasible and can be implemented in similar sites.Restorasi hutan diperlukan untuk memperbaiki fungsi ekosistem hutan yang terdegradasi.
