Abstract

Numerous studies have been conducted on the usage of audiobooks. However, a qualitative systematic evaluation of the use of audiobooks for the development of listening and speaking abilities has not yet been done. The purpose of this research was to conduct a review of journal publications on the use of audiobooks to improve listening and speaking abilities. By using a qualitative systematic review, the researchers conducted a search of Google Scholar for 390 reference materials on audiobooks as media for teaching listening and speaking. Only three articles were collected and included in the analysis by using coding and classification. The results showed that audiobooks assist students in strengthening their listening and speaking skills. An audiobook cannot replace a teacher and should be utilized in conjunction with other educational materials. Further researchers could conduct research on the audiobooks of non-native English speakers in educational materials.

Abstract

Although technological advances offer new and advanced tools for language learning, language textbooks are the main means that are still used in language learning by world language learners and have become their target culture. This study aims to analyze the advantages of language textbooks to determine how effectively they are used as learning media and to examine their role in interactions while learning English. In this research, the researcher used the qualitative systematic review method by taking several references from journal articles to complement research data through a web database and using interviews as reinforcement and support. This study found that textbooks play a very important role in modern education, as demonstrated by the journal articles that researchers examined. Moreover, textbooks offer several advantages: first, they serve as a means to teach morals and pedagogy in English; second, they facilitate contextual interaction between educational components, with practical, authentic, and valid materials presented; and third, they help develop intercultural competence by promoting four key values: respect for diversity, respect for the rights of indigenous peoples, peace with the environment and all living things, and respect for cultural artifacts.

Abstract

This research investigated how EFL teachers become more engaged with extensive reading when developing their writing proficiency. This research used a narrative inquiry method to collect data on individuals who have and have not engaged in extensive reading. An initial questionnaire was sent to EFL teachers through Google-form. Fifteen EFL high school teachers responded to the questionnaire, most female and 33 years old. Afterward, one chosen EFL teacher was interviewed to discuss how they use extensive reading to improve their writing skills. The results found that the keys to improving scientific article writing as a hobby are that English teachers read articles from various sources to gain more information and understand different perspectives. Besides, they set a reading target of 15 minutes per day for them, leading to 20 books per year, or at least they can start practicing extensive reading since university. Also, reading fairytales, comics, folktales, magazines, novels, and short stories as extensive reading materials could increase their writing proficiency. In brief, extensive reading improves vocabulary mastery, reading fluency, and English proficiency, helping teachers better convey ideas and thoughts through written language. The implication was also discussed here.
