Abstract

This research explores the use of YouTube as an English language learning tool to enhance speaking skills among university students. The aim is to determine the effectiveness of using YouTube as an English language learning tool in improving students' speaking skills. This research design used quantitative methods. The method for data collection was carried out by observation, namely questionnaires. The participants consisted of 90 students from various universities, with various semesters and different age groups. The findings indicate that a significant number of respondents use YouTube regularly for English language learning. This research contributes to understanding the role of YouTube in English language learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the Google Translate English writing evidence of English department and less-proficient non-English department students and students' perceptions of translating activities using Google Translate. Through the quantitative research, the researcher distributed a survey in the form of a Google form to 100 students majoring in English and non-English departments. A questionnaire was used to collect the opinions of the students on the activity. The results showed that Google Translates text exhibits authoring performance that is noticeably better and provides more enriched content, employing a vocabulary more sophisticated and grammatical errors. Students use Google Translate because the tool shows better L2 performance in writing languages and tends to be instantaneous. The implications of this research are what students' perceptions of Google Translate are, and whether Google Translate can improve students' writing skills.

Abstract

Digital platforms such as TikTok have become increasingly popular in language learning in recent years, especially for students studying English as a foreign language (EFL). With regard to the platform's influence on EFL learners' language acquisition, the study addresses Kampung Inggris LC TikTok Account's novel approach to vocabulary building. The research aimed to explore EFL students' perspectives on using the Kampung Inggris LC TikTok Account as a tool for learning English vocabulary. The study used quantitative survey to gauge users' perceptions and experiences with  Kampung Inggris LC TikTok Account. Out of the 126 participants in the study, 40 were students from UIN Walisongo and 86 were from Man 2 Tegal. Data collection was gathered through a Google Form. The findings of this study suggest that Kampung Inggris LC TikTok Account can be a valuable tool for EFL students to enhance their vocabulary skills. The videos' engaging and interactive nature make them appealing to a wide range of learners.

Abstract

There is a strong need to investigate English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ perceptions of Facebook as a language-learning environment, as their perceptions that directly influence their language development and achievement have not been examined within the EFL learning context. Thus, this study aims to investigate EFL learners’ perceptions of Facebook as a language learning environment. The sample group of the study consisted of 17 EFL learners at a Walisongo Islamic State University. After administering a background questionnaire and a survey that assessed their perceptions, the frequencies, mean scores, standard deviations were computed. The results showed that Indonesian EFL students perceive Facebook as an environment for communication, interaction, socialization, language learning and cultural interaction. It was recommended that further research should focus on the variables and determinants that may affect their perceptions to understand the theoretical and practical aspects regarding cultural differences.

Abstract

This article titled “Using Canva for Learning English: A Creative Approach” presents a quantitative research study that aimed to collect data on the perceptions of students towards the use of Canva as a media for English Language Teaching (ELT). The study was conducted among students of the English Language Education Study Program at UIN Walisomgo Semarang, and the research design was descriptive quantitative. The sample was selected using simple random sampling, and data was collected using a questionnaire with 15 questions as indicators. The procedures involved preparing instruments to collect data, using a questionnaire, and analyzing the data using descriptive quantitative research design. According to the findings of the study, students viewed Canva as a positive medium for ELT. This study sheds light on the efficacy of using Canva as a creative approach to English language learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate a method for integrating English foreign language learners with YouTube media to enhance listening and speaking skills. This analysis uses a qualitative method by adopting a survey research design. Data collection involved the distribution of questionnaires via Google Forms to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students at both high school and university levels. The researchers aimed to investigate the acquisition of English, focusing on listening and speaking abilities, through the use of the YouTube app. A total of 79 respondents, comprising 23 men and 56 women, participated in this study. The research included an exploration of YouTube media as a tool for English language instruction to enhance listening and speaking skills. The procedures in this study include searching for data from online forms as well as various opinions from respondents which are useful for finding accurate research results. These findings are to be useful because they can give teachers and administrators a practical and theoretical understanding of undergraduate EFL learners perception of using YouTube as a supplemental resource for language acquisition.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate a method for integrating English learners' podcasting skill development by teacher beliefs. This research design used an online form basis which contains multiple choices and also open ended questions. Participants involved in this study were 17 participants. The procedure used in this study was the use of forms and there was also an interview session. Data analysis which was known in this study was that 82,4% respondents were familiar with podcast media for learning English. In this research, a qualitative descriptive research method was employed, revealing the efficacy of podcasts as a valuable medium for English language learning, particularly in the domains of listening and speaking skills. Utilizing podcasts to foster English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking and listening proficiency emerged as an engaging and fruitful technique, demonstrating its potential as an effective tool for language enhancement. Consequently, the study advocates for the incorporation of podcasts into the EFL curriculum.

Abstract

Teachers must be conscious of adapting educational philosophies and practices to new generations of learners. One of the social media used is WhatsApp. WhatsApp is currently often used for English learning by students. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of WhatsApp as an English learning medium for students. The data source for finding social problems in this research uses a qualitative approach using a descriptive design. The subjects of this research were 67 State Islamic University students from several faculties, with an age range of 18 to 25 years. Data collection in this research used questionnaires and interviews. The results of these two methods will be integrated holistically to present a comprehensive and in-depth picture of the phenomenon being studied. The results of this research were that 79.1% of 67 students concluded that it was effective and 20.1% considered it less effective than WhatsApp for learning. The use of WhatsApp is effective as an English learning medium for students because WhatsApp is an application that is often used so it is very easy to use as a learning medium.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to look into students' perceptions on using the Duolingo application to learn English. This was a descriptive investigation which involved 100 university students in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. Surveys and interviews were used to collect data. The data of the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively through simple percentage analysis of SPSS. Meanwhile, the interview data were qualitatively examined. Collection, categorization, description, interpretation, and conclusion comprise the model. The findings revealed that the students gave favorable responses to fourteen questionnaire statements and three interview questions that represented their perceptions on the use of Duolingo in EFL learning. The students thought that learning English with Duolingo was simple, enjoyable, interesting, and motivating. In short, the students had positive perceptions on the use of Duolingo in EFL learning. Furthermore, according to the results of the students' interviews, there were various advantages and disadvantages of using Duolingo to learn English. For example, this application could help students improve their English skills, the features of Duolingo were interesting and addictive, it could stimulate and motivate students to learn English, and students felt comfortable and enjoyed learning English while using Duolingo. On the other hand, students noticed several drawbacks of using the Duolingo application, including the inability to play and learn through the use of Duolingo in offline mode, the presence of annoying advertisements in the middle of exercises, the presence of several repeated questions in the same level, and the lack of explanation regarding grammatical structures.

Abstract

With the increasing influence of technology in education, it is critical to comprehend how prepared future educators are to employ ICT technologies for language instruction. This research aims to determine the level to which pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers are prepared to use media based on information and communication technology (ICT) in the context of listening skills development. The research focuses on higher education students pursuing EFL teacher training programs and looks at how they use ICT-based media to shed light on their attitudes, skills, and perceived barriers. This study employs a descriptive quantitative research method, utilizing a questionnaire to assess the preparedness of 100 pre-service EFL teachers for using ICT-based media in language learning, particularly in listening classes, with data analyzed through charts and narrative explanations. The results of this study are expected to add to the existing knowledge regarding the use of technology in language teaching. Furthermore, this study can offer useful suggestions for integrating ICT-based media into improving listening abilities and encouraging more efficient and interesting language learning environments in EFL classrooms
