Abstract

Learning to speak is essential, particularly for university students. The use of TED Talks as a teaching tool is suggested as a solution to improve English language skills, particularly speaking, by providing teachers and students with a platform to utilise videos as a valuable teaching resource in the classroom. The data for this study were gathered by a quantitative survey approach. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate how students perceive the use of TED Talks to enhance their speaking abilities. The instrument used in this research to collect the data was a questionnaire. The participants were 75 undergraduate English Education students who had watched TED Talks to boost speaking skills. The results show that students' feelings about utilising TED Talks to learn speaking skills have an impact on the way they speak, vocabulary growth, pronunciation, and accent, giving them a boost in confidence, affecting their presentation style, and motivating them to improve their speaking skills. Through this research, it is suggested that TED Talks can be integrated into the learning curriculum to enhance students' speaking skills.

Abstract

Digital platforms have increasingly become essential tools for enhancing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, particularly in contexts where exposure to authentic language use is limited. YouTube, as one of the most widely used platforms, provides accessible, engaging, and authentic learning resources for EFL learners. Among the available channels, “Learn English with TV Series” has gained popularity due to its use of authentic scenes from popular TV shows to teach vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and communication strategies. This study aims to examine EFL students’ perceptions of using this YouTube channel as supplementary learning material. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, data were collected through an online survey administered to 100 EFL students from various regions in Indonesia. The findings indicate overwhelmingly positive perceptions: students frequently engage with the channel, find the content interesting and easy to understand, and perceive it as beneficial for developing listening, speaking, vocabulary, and grammar skills. The channel also enhances students’ motivation to practice English and is widely recommended among peers. These results demonstrate the channel’s potential as an effective supplementary resource to support formal English instruction. The study highlights the importance of integrating digital learning tools into EFL pedagogy and offers insights for educators and content creators in designing engaging and pedagogically sound online learning materials.

Abstract

This research investigated how EFL teachers become more engaged with extensive reading when developing their writing proficiency. This research used a narrative inquiry method to collect data on individuals who have and have not engaged in extensive reading. An initial questionnaire was sent to EFL teachers through Google-form. Fifteen EFL high school teachers responded to the questionnaire, most female and 33 years old. Afterward, one chosen EFL teacher was interviewed to discuss how they use extensive reading to improve their writing skills. The results found that the keys to improving scientific article writing as a hobby are that English teachers read articles from various sources to gain more information and understand different perspectives. Besides, they set a reading target of 15 minutes per day for them, leading to 20 books per year, or at least they can start practicing extensive reading since university. Also, reading fairytales, comics, folktales, magazines, novels, and short stories as extensive reading materials could increase their writing proficiency. In brief, extensive reading improves vocabulary mastery, reading fluency, and English proficiency, helping teachers better convey ideas and thoughts through written language. The implication was also discussed here.

Abstract

The rise of information and communication technology has led to the development of various new teaching and learning methods for English. Podcasting is one such method that teachers are using to enhance language skills and promote outside-of-classroom learning. This study investigates the use of podcasting technology to develop EFL learners’ listening skills. It employed a quantitative descriptive design involving 48 EFL students from the English Education program at a state university in Semarang, Indonesia. Data were collected through a questionnaire exploring students’ experiences, perceptions, benefits, and challenges of using podcasts for listening practice. The findings indicate that most students responded positively to podcast-based learning and perceived podcasts as helpful in improving their listening comprehension, particularly due to their authenticity, accessibility, and flexibility. However, students also reported challenges, especially related to speech speed and comprehension difficulties. These findings highlight the potential of podcasting technology as an effective supplementary medium for developing listening skills and emphasize the importance of integrating podcast-based listening activities into EFL instruction at both university and secondary school levels.
