Abstract

According to 2009 Indonesian Health Profile Data, pulp and periapical diseases were 8thof the 10 outpatients athospital. This situation tends to increase become the big of 7. Pulp and periapical diseases occur due to bacterialinfection in the pulp tissue. The bacteria are often found in the root canal, namely E. faecalis, and Actinomyces spp.Various herbs commonly used by people to treat dental diseases, i.e. root sidaguri. However, sidaguri plants have notbeen studied in the field of dentistry as an antibacterial. This study aimed to determine the effects of root sidaguriagainst E. faecalis and Actinomyces spp. Inhibition test of ethanol extract of the roots sidaguri against E. faecalis andActinomyces spp. using agar diffusion method at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% based on themeasurement of inhibition zone by each concentration. The greatest inhibition against E. faecalis was performed by concentration of 20% (p<0.05), while no inhibition zone was found on Actinomyces spp. It was concluded that theethanol extract of the sidaguri roots was the most effective against E. faecalis at concentration of 20%, but not effectiveat all against Actinomyces spp.

Abstract

Chronic apical periodontitis is one of common periapical diseases. Inflammation in the periapical tissue is caused bybacteria from the root canal necrotic. If the tooth is not treated, the infection can progress to periapical region causingchronic apical periodontitis. The variety of bacteria can be found in root canal with chronic apical periodontitis. Thisstudy aims to determine the type of bacteria in chronic apical periodontitis. Samples were obtained from fifteen patientswith teeth that have chronic apical periodontitis in the Department of Conservative Dentistry in Dental Hospital ofHasanuddin University. Bacteria collected from a sample specimen using paper points which were inserted into the rootcanal. Subsequent, bacterial specimens identified in the Medical Microbiology Laboratory of the Medical Faculty,Hasanuddin University. This study found seven different types of bacteria with varying percentages. Type of Grampositivefacultative anaerobic bacteria Streptococcus spp. is the most dominant bacteria found in the root canal withchronic apical periodontitis. This study concluded that the dominant bacteria in the root canals with chronic apical periodontitis were Streptococcus spp.

Abstract

Objective: To examine the expression of caspase-3 and IL-1? following application of Pulp Out® on rabbit’s pulp teeth as well as histopathology.Material and Methods: The study was conducted on the maxillary incisors rabbits. The teeth were prepared and Pulp Out® was inserted at the base of prepared cavity, then restored with RM-GIC. After 24 hours, the animals were then euthanized and processed for histopathology and immunohistochemistry evaluation.Results: Our results indicated that Pulp Out®, when administered to the pulp teeth, increased the number and diameter of blood vessels. The expression of caspase-3 and IL-1? showed similarities to the expression of commercial devitalizing agent.Conclusion: Our results revealed that Pulp Out® is a valuable devitalization agent that should be further explored for its safety before clinical application.

Abstract

Latar Belakang: Diskolorasi pada gigi anterior merupakan suatu masalah estetik. Salah satu penyebab gigi anterior berubah warna adalah cedera traumatik. Bleaching interna merupakan salah satu cara untuk mengatasi diskolorasi yang bersifat minimal invasif. Kasus: Pasien berusia 29 tahun datang ke klinik untuk mendapatkan perawatan pada gigi insisivus sentralis kiri atasnya. Gigi tersebut berwarna cokelat kehitaman akibat cedera traumatik. Pemeriksaan klinis menunjukkan gigi 21 mengalami diskolorasi. Tes vitalitas, perkusi, dan palpasi negatif. Penatalaksanaan: Dilakukan perawatan saluran akar kemudian dilanjutan dengan bleaching interna. Simpulan: Diskolorasi gigi yang disebabkan oleh nekrosis pulpa akibat cedera dapat diputihkan dengan bleaching interna. Kata kunci: diskolorasi, bleaching interna, cedera traumatik
