Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the swelling behaviour of Hand Polyvinyl Acetate/Polyvinyl alcohol (HANP/PVA) and HANP/PVA/Poly Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid (PLGA) composites.Material and Methods: This study was divided into 2 groups, HANP/PVA and HANP/PLGA/PVA composites which prepared by freeze drying methods. HANP 20% (w/w) was combined with PLGA 20% (w/w) and dissolved in PVA solution at 50oC. Swelling behaviour was obtained by measured initial weight (Wi) and the weight of composites after immersing in PBS pH 7.4; 37oC for 7 days (swollen weight (Ws)). Statistical analysis based on Independent T-test (p<0.05).Results: The Wi of HANP/PVA and HANP/PLGA/PVA composites are 467±4.73 and 292±9.52. The Ws of HANP/PVA and HANP/PLGA/PVA composites are 897±26.61 and 860±32.36. Furthermore, the water retention of HANP/PVA composite is 92.07% (p<0.05) and HANP/PLGA/PVA composite is 194.52% (p<0.05).Conclusion: The addition of PLGA enhance swelling behaviour of HANP/PVA composites. The strong interaction between HANP and PVA decrease the swelling re. HANP is inert in nature, but the combination of HANP/PLGA/PVA can be a good substitute for alveolar preservation.

Abstract

Dental and oral health has an important role in supporting the health of the human body. Diseases and disorders of the teeth in school-age children between 7-15 years are disturbances in growth and development. However, many factors still influence the occurrence of dental and oral problems. One of them is the lack of attention and knowledge. At the age of children, parents and teachers have an important role in guiding, providing understanding, reminding and providing facilities to maintain healthy teeth and mouth. Therefore, all three of them need to know to underlie the formation of behaviors that support children adopting a healthy lifestyle. Based on these conditions, we conducted community service to increase this knowledge through the School Health Program, which was implemented in 7 elementary schools in Malang City. In this activity, education was carried out for students, parents and teachers with a total of 325 participants. The results of this program show an increase in knowledge by students, teachers and parents. The knowledge conveyed included basic dental care recommendations such as brushing teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, managing good eating habits, staying away from bad habits that damage teeth and preventing dental caries as early as possible. After completing this activity, participants can adopt a healthy lifestyle to prevent problems with their teeth and mouth.

Abstract

Background: Bone loss has a major impact on the process of placing implants and dentures. Nanoparticle hydroxyapatite (HANP) has better biodegradability and mechanical properties than micro-particle hydroxyapatite. PVA is a synthetic polymer that is cheap, hydrophilic, has high mechanical stability and flexibility but low biodegradability. PLGA is a new synthetic polymer which is widely used in the biomedical, however PLGA has less osteoconductive properties. The ideal scaffold has several important characteristics, one of which is having a porosity of>70%.  Objective: To know the role of PLGA on the porosity of the scaffold by comparing the porosity of the HANP-PVA scaffold and the HANP-PVA scaffold given PLGA Methods: Group 1 was the HANP-PVA scaffold with a content of 20% HANP (w / w). Group 2 was the HANP-PVA scaffold which added 20% (w/w) of PLGA. Both groups were synthesized by freeze drying method at -80oC for 24 hours. The porosity test was used the liquid displacement method for 24 hours. Statistical testing using Shapiro Wilk, Levene's test and Independent t-Test Results: The porosity of the HANP-PVA scaffold was 77.90% ± 4.51 and the HANP-PVA-PLGA scaffold was 87.55% ± 5.67. The Shapiro-Wilk normality test showed that the data were normally distributed (p> 0.05). The independent t test showed a significant difference between the HANP-PVA and HANP-PVA-PLGA scaffold (p <0.05) Conclusions: The addition of PLGA to the scaffold can increase the porosity of the HANP-PVA scaffold. HANP-PVA-PLGA has the potential to accelerate bone regeneration after extraction  Keyword: bone loss, PVA, PLGA, Hydroxyapatite nanoparticle
