Abstract

Cooperative problem-based learning (CPBL) has been introduced in engineering education as an effective technique for developing students' professional skills. Moreover, the method is essential for engaging students in learning and developing 21st century skills. However, students are usually "shocked" by such inquiry learning because they face sudden changes in the learning environment. In addition, its implementation in online learning is another challenge. Therefore, this study aims to identify students' perceptions of online CPBL performance in vocational pre-teacher education institutions. A self-reporting questionnaire was designed focusing on 21st century skills and distributed to 71 students after the end of the semester. Quantitatively, the instrument of the survey data was analysed using SPSS software. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics. The results show that online CPBL improved students’ collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills. In general, they agreed that online CPBL improved the development of 21st century skills.However, the students faced some difficulties during the online discussion session due to internet connection problems and team member involvement. Details of the items are also discussed.

Abstract

Online learning has increased rapidly in Indonesia's higher education since the government enforced to combat the spread of COVID-19. However, inequality in implementation has become an issue in several countries. In Indonesia, with archipelagic and mountainous topography has several challenges. Therefore, the present study is aimed to evaluate and analyze the benefits, challenges, and suggestions of online learning in Indonesia for future improvement. A total of 271 students were surveyed and provided complete information regarding the survey. Quantitatively, the instrument of the survey data is analyzed by using SPSS software. Qualitatively, data from open-ended participants' responses were analyzed by qualitative content analysis to explore the findings from the survey. The result showed that online learning was more efficient, provided easy communication, improve students' engagement, and developed their virtual learning skills. However, it was also found that the overall students were still unsatisfied since the uneven infrastructures of internet connectivity and learning arrangements not good enough. In line with this, media, processes, facilitators skills, and assessments needed further improvement. Students’ suggestions for improving online learning quality are discussed as well.

Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic has changed the culture of teaching and learning activities in the schools. Learning activities are conducted online with the use of e-learning. Generally, Vocational High Schools (SMK) already have supporting facilities for the implementation of e-learning such as computer laboratories and adequate internet networks. However, most of the teachers in the schools are still not ready for the massive use of e-learning. For this reason, schools need training for teachers to optimize the use and integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in learning activities. The purpose of this community service is to provide training to teachers of SMK Muhammadiyah Delanggu to make e-learning and implement it in the learning process. This activity involved all teachers of SMK Muhammadiyah Delanggu. The stages of this training are: a) introduction to the concept of online learning (e-learning), b) workshop of creating e-learning, and c) application of e-learning into the subjects taught by each teacher. The results of this training: a) the teachers have been able to make learning packages, materials, and activities in the e-learning, b) Pedagogical competences of teachers have increased showed by a readiness to integrate ICT in the learning process, and c) The readiness of the school to optimize the application of e-learning to improve the learning process.

Abstract

Developing substitution products for mining equipment parts in local industries will have a significant economic impact. In addition, it will create independence in the supply of mining components, not relying on imports. However, Ceper metal casting area is still using traditional methods. This community service aims to improve product design and skills to support the supply chain availability of consumable mining equipment parts. Designing from existing components is not easy for small industries; therefore, it needs assistance from university experts. The method used design assistance in the production of bucket-adapter consumable parts. The mechanical engineering study program team assists with three stages of the process: (1) scanning, (2) triangulation, and (3) CAD modeling. The results showed that consumable parts had been successfully submitted to an industry partner to proceed to the following stages: (4) CAM and (5) machining. The consumable parts design improves quality and independence in manufacturing mining equipment parts. The local industry appreciated this activity because a good design can improve the process of developing consumable mining equipment parts.

Abstract

Welding practice is one type of practice with a fairly long duration. Therefore, an ergonomic welding table design is needed so that the practice can practice safely and comfortably. The purpose of this study was to evaluate existing designs with the REBA analysis approach and then redesign the more ergonomic welding table. Data collection technique using purposive sampling technique. The proposed welding table design is based on anthropometric data of 30 UNS Mechanical Engineering Education students class of 2018, 2019, and 2020. The design design of this welding table uses SolidWork 2019 software. The calculation of ergonomic risk evaluation with REBA resulted in a score of 6 meaning that immediate improvement is needed and requires further investigation. The results of this study obtained a new welding table design design that has dimensions: 42 cm in length, 40 cm in width, and 2,010 cm in height. This welding table also provides space to put the welding machine under the welding table. Thus, the improvement of the design of the welding table will increase the efficiency of the implementation of the practice. In addition, the practice will be safer and more comfortable because the welding table has adjusted to the posture of the average student.

Abstract

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers includes self-development activities, scientific publications, and innovative works. Scientific publications are often an obstacle to a teacher's career. Therefore, the skill of writing a scientific paper is a competency that must be possessed by teachers. This community service aims to provide assistance and improve scientific writing skills for Vocational High School (SMK) teachers. The method used consists of a classical approach of holding workshops and individual post-workshop assistance until submitting participant articles to scientific journals. Based on the results of the program, it was found that: (1) the teachers showed high enthusiasm in participating in the program; (2) there is one participant who successfully published his article in the Indonesian Sinta indexed journals; (3) participants who are still in the process and who have already had draft articles still need individual assistance until they can publish into scientific journals. The mentoring program is still needed on an ongoing basis so that writing culture is formed as a part of the CPD program.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian ini ditujukan untuk meningkatkan pembelajaran STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) di sekolah dasar di Kabupaten Klaten melalui konsep engineering design dan eksperimen. STEM diarahkan sebagai pembelajaran terintegrasi antara beberapa bidang ilmu, terutama terkait matematika, sains (fisika, kimia, biologi dan ilmu lingkungan) serta IT (Information Technology). Pembelajaran dilakukan dengan mengenalkan beberapa teknologi yang menggunakan sumber energi angin. Kegiatan engineering design process dilakukan melalui modul dan kegiatan pembelajaran melalui: (1) memahami konteks permasalahan; (2) melakukan eksplorasi mengenai bentuk dan jenis turbin yang mampu menangkap energi angin; dan (3) melakukan eksperimen turbin angin. Modul pembelajaran dibuat tim pengabdi bersama guru. Guru memberikan pendampingan kepada peserta didik selama pelaksanaan kegiatan. Peserta didik didorong untuk menggunakan kemampuan STEM dalam eksperimen turbin angin. Pada akhir kegiatan diharapkan diperoleh luaran berupa modul pembelajaran yang mengintegrasikan pendidikan berbasis lingkungan hidup pada pembelajaran STEM
