Abstract

This study aims at finding out the students' learning motivation in online learning using Google Classroom during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMP Muhammadiyah 29 Sawangan. This study applies the descriptive qualitative research method. There were 36 students in eighth-grade D students at SMP Muhammadiyah 29 Sawangan- Depok who participated in this research. The data were collected through a questionnaire, interviews, and observation. The result of the questionnaire is the students are motivated because some of them are very enthusiastic about learning English during a pandemic covid-19. In the interview, the teacher always gives motivation for students to learn English, and some of the students consider using google classroom helpful for the teaching-learning process in this era. In the observed teaching-learning process, the students actively learn English using Google Classroom, and the teacher always gives the materials for students learning English in the forum, and always explain materials. In this study, the students are motivated to always learn English by using Google Classroom because the students know their responsibilities as students always learn, and students also always motivate themselves to be enthusiastic about learning because for their future. For further study are expected to continue to develop research on student learning motivation because research on student learning motivation aims to find out what makes students motivated to study hard.

Abstract

This study investigated the use of a graphic organizer reading strategy in improving the students’ reading comprehension achievement. It was aimed to find out to what extend the improvement of the students reading comprehension after being treated using the graphic organizer strategy. This research also wanted to check the differences in the result between the class which used the graphic organizer and the class which did not apply a specific reading strategy. This study was conducted at the grade 11 students of SMK Sasmita Jaya Tangerang Selatan. This research administered cluster random sampling in taking samples and decided two classes as the same samples. One class was treated using a graphic organizer and the other class was not treated using any specific kind of strategy or conventional strategy. The method of this research was quantitative research under quasi-experimental research. A quasi-experimental design was used to know the result after specific treatment was applied. After collecting the data, then it was analyzed using SPSS. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was found that applying the Graphic Organizer reading strategy in reading lessons could improve students’ reading comprehension achievement.

Abstract

Abstract This research investigated the use of Question and Answer Relationship Reading Strategy in increasing the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The research aimed to find out to what extent the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension achievement after being treated using Question and Answer Relationship (QAR) reading strategy. This research was conducted at the grade XII students of SMK Sasmita Jaya 2, Tangerang Selatan. This reaseach administrated cluster random sampling in taking the sample then decided two classes as the samples, one class was treated using QAR reading strategy and the other class was not. The method of the research was quantitative research under quasy experimental research. The result of the research shows that there was significant improvement of their reading comprehension after being treated using QAR reading strategy and there was also significant difference between the the students who were treated using QAR reading strategy and the students who were not.Keywords: Comprehension, Reading, Strategy, Students, QAR

Abstract

This paper investigated the effect of reading strategy and personality traits in improving students’ reading comprehension achievement. This reseach was conducted at the grade 12 students of SMK Sasmita Jaya 2 Pamulang, Tangerang Selatan. The researcher administered quantitative research under quassy esperimental research through pre test and post test. The two reading strategies named QAR (Question and Answer Relationship) reading strategy and KWL (Know Want know and Learn) reading strategy were andministrated to the students. The pre test and post test were applied in order to know the effect of the reading strategy toward the students’ reading comprehension achievement, meanwhile the questioner of MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) was administrated to the students to know their types of personality whether they are extrovert and introvert. After analysing the data, it was found that there is significant improvement of the students reading comprehension achievement after the strategy being applied. However the result also showed that there is no significant difference between QAR reading strategy and KWL raeding strategy in improving students reading comprehension achievement. Meanwhile from the calculation of SPSS, the result showed that there is no significant interaction between personality toward the students’ reading comprhension achievement.

Abstract

Mode, as one of elements of context, can influence speech acts. Virtual meeting, as one of modes that signifies the absence of direct interaction potentially influences the speech acts too. This study aims at identifying speech acts in the instructional practices at selected elementary schools in South Tangerang, Banten to answer (1) what types of speech acts used by teachers and students of each school and (2) what factors influence the chosen speech acts. This is a content analysis that explores communication occurrences between teachers and young learners in English classes. Three pre-schools in Pamulang district were chosen as sources of data. The data were collected by recording their communication practices in three consecutive meetings. In total, there are nine communication practices from all the pre-schools. Then, the data were transcribed and segmented by clausal units to identify types of speech acts produced by each party. The findings show that every school performs similar patterns of speech acts dominated by the use of directive expression to maintain the students’ engagement, followed by declarative expression to stimulate the students’ active participation in various activities during the virtual instructional practices.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk  meningkatkan literasi peserta didik melalui membaca puisi di Jampang English Village (JEV), Zona Madina-Parung Bogor. Kegiatan mengacu pada proses pemberian pelatihan membaca puisi oleh sepuluh orang mahasiswa dengan arahan empat orang dosen Sastra Inggris Universitas Pamulang. PKM dilaksanakan dengan metode pemberian pelatihan kepada perserta didik dan pengenalan materi tentang apa dan bagaimana strategi dalam membaca puisi untuk dapat menigkatkan kemampuan membaca serta memahami puisi bagi anak-anak secara daring dengan menggunakan video conference melaui google meet maupun zona meeting. Pada proses evaluasi, peserta didik diminta merekam kegiatan membaca puisi mereka dalam bentuk vodeo visual sehingga akan terdengar intonasi, dan pelafalan, serta terlihat ekspresi mereka membawakan puisi. Setelah direview dan disetujui, kemudian peserta didik mengirim dan mengunggah video tersebut di akun instagram @jevdompetdhuafa yang merupakan akun resmi milik Jampang English Village. Mahasiswa bertindak sebagai mentor yang mengunggah foto perserta pelatihan dan mencantumkan beberapa catatan berupa penilaian dan kemajuan peserta didik dalam membaca puisi. Mentor merumusan kendala yang dialami peserta didik selama lomba membaca puisi dan memberikan solusinya.

Abstract

Artikel ini bertujuan memberikan informasi pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yaitu memberikan pelatihan kepada siswa di PAUD Annur yang berada di Cogreg, Kecamatan Parung, Bogor, Jawa Barat. Penggunaan aktivitas belajar yang bervariasi dan menyenangkan merupakan yang dilakukan oleh beberapa dosen dan mahasiswa Sastra Inggris UNPAM sebagai solusi dari beberapa permasalahan yang dialami anak-anak usia dini di PAUD Annur dalam belajar kosakata bahasa Inggris dan dapat memotivasi mereka untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris.  Tujuan utama dilaksanakannya kegiatan ini adalah untuk membantu siswa PAUD melafalkan, mengingat dan memahami kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan mengunakan aktivitas yang bervariasi. Metode yang digunakan dalam pembelajaran adalah drilling dengan media flashcard, game, dan song. Tujuan pembelajaran adalah pengayaan kosakata nomina bahasa Inggris dengan topik Animals. Hasil pelaksanaan pengabdian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan pembelajaran kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan kegiatan bervariasi dan media flashcard, game, dan song efektif membantu siswa melafalkan, mengingat dan memahami kosakata. Siswa PAUD Annur termotivasi belajar Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Language style is a way of people talking and expressing messages, thoughts, or ideas to others. Everyone will use a different style of language when speaking. This happens for various reasons, including: the interlocutor factor, the purpose of the conversation, the context of the conversation, the time and place where the conversation was carried out, and so on. This study aims to analyze the types of language style and the factors of the use of language style spoken by the actors in the film "Downton Abbey: New Era”. In this study, the writers used the theory proposed by Joos (1967) in his book The Five Clocks about types of language style and Holmes (1992) about the factors that influence them. The theory about the style of language that are explored in the utterances spoken by the actors in the film are frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. While the factors that appear are setting, participant, topic, and function. This study applied a qualitative method with literature study as the approach.
