Abstract

Parenting is a necessary component of human development. It assists children in developing the competencies necessary to function in and face society as adults. A good parenting approach would assist the child in functioning optimally in the society; on the other hand, a poor parenting practice would increase the child's susceptibility to negative behavior and ultimately ruin the child's future. This paper aims to demonstrate Dahl's portrayal of parenting styles and their effect on children’s behavior in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The study was performed using the psychology of literature approach, with Baumrind's parenting framework serving as the underlying theory. The finding demonstrates that parental parenting styles serve as the "mold" for children's actions as portrayed by the characters in the story. (1)Permissive parenting, as demonstrated by Veruca Salt and Augustus Gloob, (2)Authoritarian parenting, as demonstrated by Violet Beauregarde, (3)Uninvolved/ Neglectful parenting, as demonstrated by Mike Teavee, and (4)Authoritative parenting, as demonstrated by Charlie Bucket, the main protagonist.

Abstract

Abstract. Literary works and language teaching need more prior focus on their investigation, specifically on seeing how those two things affect language proficiency. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of teaching literature in improving students' English proficiency while also considering other aspects such as empathy, emotional intelligence, and aesthetic satisfaction. The method used was a pre-experimental design with a sample of 28 students. Before the intervention, a needs analysis was conducted to measure students' reading literacy, reading interest, and aesthetic interaction with literature. Learning objectives designed based on this needs analysis were then implemented. The data were taken through conducting need analysis, treatment, and measurement. The findings showed a significant increase in the student's English proficiency, with approximately 82% increases in empathy scores, 35% in emotional intelligence, and 20% in aesthetic satisfaction. These results indicate that literature is an effective tool for language teaching and contributes to students' holistic development in other aspects of life. Keywords: children's literature; emotional intelligence; language development; teaching literatureAbstrak. Abstract

As the world has shifted dramatically, university graduates must possess hard and soft skills to compete in the job market and thrive in the competitive era of 5.0. Strong communication skills, encompassing speaking, listening, observing, and empathizing, are essential for success in this competitive environment. This paper aims to elaborate on implementing a simple classroom activity called "Show and Tell" to encourage students to communicate freely. The show-and-tell activity was modified to meet the needs of university-level students. The study involved 120 students from the civil engineering, law, and architecture departments of Musamus University of Merauke, with 53 female and 67 male students. This research utilized a qualitative approach to understand the learners' development better. The data collection methods in the field included field notes, audio-video recordings, and interviews with the learners. The results indicate that while students' English competencies were generally at a beginner level, the "show and tell" activity significantly enhanced their confidence and communication skills. Participants reported feeling more at ease when speaking in front of their peers, leading to improved articulation and organization of thoughts. Simultaneously, the activity also fostered empathy and a supportive learning environment, as students connected emotionally with their classmates.
