Abstract

Reading comprehension is a crucial foundation in the learning process of students. However, many obstacles remain in mastering this competency, especially in the digital era, which requires adapting learning methods. Therefore, an innovative approach is needed that can integrate technology and proven effective learning strategies. This study aims to develop a Hybrid Learning model based on Reciprocal Teaching to systematically and measurably improve students' reading comprehension skills. This model combines online and offline learning with collaborative discussion strategies to form a deeper understanding of the text. The method used in this study is a research and development approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, reading tests, and questionnaires, which were analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings of this study confirm that the Hybrid Learning model based on Reciprocal Teaching is more effective than conventional methods in improving students' metacognitive skills and reading comprehension. This is evidenced by a significant increase of 31.7% in the experimental group, with a p-value of 0.001, compared to the control group, which increased by 13.6% with a p-value of 0.045. This effectiveness demonstrates that integrating metacognitive strategies, utilising technology, and employing collaborative learning in the hybrid model can encourage students to be more active, reflective, and independent in their understanding of reading texts. The Hybrid Reciprocal Teaching model has been proven to be more effective than conventional methods, as it significantly improves students' metacognitive skills and reading comprehension.

Data were obtained from pre-test and post-test instruments, and analyzed through SPSS 26, focusing on descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, and frequency) and inferential statistics using a paired sample t-test. The results demonstrated a notable progress in students’ reading comprehension, where the mean score increased from 51.5 (classified as poor) to 74.3 (classified as average). The paired sample t-test revealed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that the null hypothesis was rejected while the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Abstract

This study investigated the influence of using short stories on students’ vocabulary mastery among eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Bulukumba. Vocabulary is one of the most essential components of language learning, as it supports students’ ability to understand, communicate, and develop other language skills. However, many students experience difficulties in acquiring and retaining vocabulary due to limited exposure to meaningful language contexts. Short stories are considered an effective instructional medium because they provide authentic language input, contextualized vocabulary, and engaging learning experiences that can enhance students’ understanding and retention of new words. This research employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. The population of the study consisted of eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Bulukumba. The sample was selected using a total sampling technique and involved 25 students. Data were collected through multiple-choice vocabulary tests administered before and after the implementation of short-story-based learning activities. The tests were designed to measure students’ vocabulary mastery and determine the effectiveness of short stories as a teaching medium. The results of the study revealed a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery after the treatment. The mean score of the pre-test was 59.6, while the mean score of the post-test increased substantially to 90.4. Furthermore, the statistical analysis showed that the calculated t-test value was 10.14, which was higher than the t-table value of 2.06. As a result, the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted. These findings indicate that the use of short stories had a positive and significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. Therefore, short stories can be considered an effective and engaging teaching medium for improving vocabulary learning among junior high school students.
