Abstract

Abstract

The pearl oyster (Pinctada maxima) is a high-value aquaculture commodity whose hatchery success is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, particularly temperature. This study aimed to determine the effect of different temperatures on the growth and survival rate of Pinctada maxima larvae. The research was conducted at PT Timur Otsuki Mutiara (PT. TOM), Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of three temperature treatments: A (28°C), B (29°C), and C (30°C), each with three replications. The observed parameters included survival rate, absolute growth, dorsal–ventral specific growth rate, anterior–posterior specific growth rate, and water quality. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that temperature had a significant effect (P<0.05) on the survival rate and specific growth rate of the larvae. The 28°C treatment produced the highest survival rate (22.44%), dorsal–ventral specific growth rate (4.97%), and anterior–posterior specific growth rate (5.13%). The highest absolute growth was also recorded at 28°C, reaching 121.67 µm; however, no significant differences were observed among treatments (P>0.05). Water quality parameters remained within the optimal range for larval rearing throughout the study. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that 28°C is the optimum temperature for supporting the growth and survival of Pinctada maxima larvae, whereas increasing the temperature up to 30°C tends to reduce larval performance.

Abstract

Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a freshwater fishery commodity that has high economic value and is widely cultivated in Indonesia. The success of tilapia cultivation is greatly influenced by the quality of feed, so it is necessary to innovate effective, economical, and environmentally friendly feed ingredients. One potential alternative is the use of dragon fruit peel (Hylocereus sp.) which contains bioactive compounds such as antioxidants, polyphenols, and fiber. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of adding dragon fruit peel to feed on the growth and survival of tilapia. The results of the study are expected to provide information on the use of agricultural waste as a feed additive that can increase the productivity of tilapia cultivation sustainably. This study was conducted by raising tilapia in an aquarium using 4 treatments and 3 replications of feeding: 0% dragon fruit peel extract, 5% dragon fruit peel extract, 10% dragon fruit peel extract, 15% dragon fruit peel extract for 56 days, fish weight measurements were carried out every 7 days. The results of the ANOVA test showed that the addition of dragon fruit peel affected the growth of weight and length of tilapia. The weight growth of tilapia fed 15% dragon fruit peel extract reached 7.3 grams, and the absolute length growth reached 40 cm. The weight growth of tilapia fed 0% dragon fruit peel extract reached 6.7 grams and the absolute length reached 2.1 cm. The weight growth of tilapia fed 10% dragon fruit peel extract reached 2.9 grams and the absolute length reached 3.4 cm. The growth of tilapia fed 5% dragon fruit peel extract reached 2.7 grams and the absolute length reached 4.3 cm Keywords: Tilapia feed, dragon fruit peel, growth

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the economic performance of Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed farming in Tablolong Village and Oenaek Village, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Kappaphycus alvarezii has significant economic potential, particularly in the export market, due to its high carrageenan content. The study employed a quantitative approach using a descriptive and comparative research design. Data were collected through interviews, field observations, and structured questionnaires administered to seaweed farmers in both villages. The results showed that although Tablolong Village generated slightly higher gross revenue, Oenaek Village demonstrated greater production efficiency. These differences were influenced by several factors, including seed quality, cultivation techniques, market accessibility, and natural resource management. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders in developing strategies to improve the economic performance and livelihoods of seaweed farmers in both villages. Abstract

Feed is a crucial factor in fish farming. Without appropriate feed, fish growth slows down, and survival rates can decline. High commercial feed costs often pose a challenge. Consequently, many fish farmers seek highly nutritious alternatives; bloodworms (Chironomus sp.) are a promising option due to their protein content, which supports fish growth. This study examined the effects of combining bloodworms with commercial feed on the growth and survival of Pangasius hypophthalmus (Siamese catfish). The experiment was conducted over 60 days at the Aquaculture Laboratory of Nusa Cendana University, Kupang, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Four treatments were tested—control (100% pellets), Treatment A (85% pellets + 15% bloodworms), Treatment B (70% pellets + 30% bloodworms), and Treatment C (55% pellets + 45% bloodworms)—with three replicates for each. The results clearly indicated that the combination of commercial feed and bloodworms significantly influenced the growth of P. hypophthalmus (p<0.05). Treatment C (45% bloodworms) yielded the best growth performance, achieving an absolute weight gain of 2.73 g and a specific growth rate (SGR) of 1.27% per day. However, regarding survival, Treatment B performed best, achieving a rate of 86.66%. Water quality remained stable throughout the study, with temperatures ranging from 26–30°C and pH levels between 6.2–8.3—ranges ideal for P. hypophthalmus. The study concludes that incorporating bloodworms at a proportion of up to 45% alongside commercial feed can accelerate the growth of P. hypophthalmus without compromising survival rates.
