Abstract

This paper discusses the conversational implicature, which is a study in pragmatic linguistics that examines the intent of speakers in conversation. The purpose of this paper is to describe what the conversational implicature is, how to identify and interpret the implicature, and why do speakers want to engage in implicature. To study the problem Grice's theory of the cooperative principle, maxims of conversation, and the conversational implicature are used. Conversation data is obtained from observations of natural conversations between writers and students, as well as conversations between students that occur on campus. The results of the analysis show that basically in every conversation the implicature is used; The implicature is used not because they do not want to cooperate in conversation, but because there are prioritized reasons and those reasons cannot comply with all maxims in maxims of conversation. The conversationalimplicature is used for the purpose of verbal efficiency, misleading to lying, politeness, and aesthetic purposes, as well as irony.

Abstract

This article discusses the meaning of the metaphor contained in the Japanese song’s lyrics. With the use of metaphor analysis "Knowles and Moon" (2006), this research examines twelve metaphors from the data source entitled Kokoro no Tomo. The aim of this study is to describe the use and meaning of the metaphor used by song’s writer. Song’s lyric is like a poem which always contains aestetice matters. It represents the expression of the writers concerning his perspective about something. To understand a song’s lyric of metaphor, we have to examine the relationship between the literal meaning and the meaning of metaphor or contextual meaning. It can be concluded that metaphor is used by writer to describe his’ real meaning’ that can not be described with ‘ordinary’ words.

Abstract

This paper tries to provide an understanding of the context in pragmatic linguistic studies. Pragmatic linguistic studies are known as branches of linguistics which discuss the meaning of speech based on context. In this paper the context is understood as a conceptual framework about everything that is used as a reference in speaking or understanding speech. Context is classified into two types, namely linguistic and nonlinguistic. Linguistic contexts are contexts whose references are contained in previous speeches and nonlinguistic contexts are not found in speech or outside of language. The nonlinguistic context can be divided into four types, namely physical, psychological, social, and shared knowledge contexts. Keywords: Pragmatics, Context, Text, Meaning, Shared knowledge

Abstract

This study discusses the politeness in speech act of thankingin correlation to the Japanese situation and object structure of thanking. This study aims to identify and define the socio-cultural factor and politeness in speech act of thanking using pragmatics point of view. The writer uses Kitagawa Eriko’s Beautiful Life movie as the source of data. The result shows that the disclosure of speech act of thanking relies on the speech situation and object structure of thanking. The factors of speech situation are the context of event and the relationship among participants or ‘uchi/soto’. The factors of object structure of thanking are real or potential, major or minor, material or immaterial, asked or unasked kindness, and kindness which can lead to moral duty. Those factors affect the choice of the types of speech act of thanking. As a result, the socio-cultural factor that determines the speech variation is uchi/soto.Key words: Language politeness, Speech situation, Thanking object, Thanking speech act, Uchi/soto

Abstract

This article explains the theory of speech acts proposed by John L. Austin and his student John R. Searle. Speech act theory is a sub-field of pragmatics. This field of study deals with the ways in which words can be used not only to present information but also to carry out actions. This theory considers three levels or components of speech: locutionary acts (the making of a meaningful statement, saying something that a hearer understands), illocutionary acts (saying something with a purpose, such as to inform), and perlocutionary acts (saying something that causes someone to act). Many view speech acts as the central units of communication, with phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic properties of an utterance serving as ways of identifying the meaning of speaker’s utterance or illocutionary force. There are five types of Illocutionary point according to Searle: declarations, assertives, expressives, directives, and commissives (1979:viii). A speech act, in order to be successful, needs to be performed along certain types of conditions. These conditions were categorized by the linguist John Searle, who introduced the term felicity conditions: propositional content condition, preparatory condition, sincerity condition, and essential condition.
