Abstract

The main objective of this study is to develop a theoretical tool to analyze humorelements in Japanese comic (manga). The authors narrow the definition of “tool” as atheoretical framework that can be used in an inductive research. Developing this tool isof importance since evaluating the quality of humor in comic is difficult and subjective, due to the inclusion of humor as a cognitive and cultural product (Hurley et al, 2011).The authors strongly emphasize that this study was a theoretical review one. Weaimed to develop a theoretical foundation pertaining to semiotic analysis in humorousmanga products. To achieve the aim, we applied qualitative content analysis to buildthe foundation inductively. The authors identify that in order to analyze humor inmanga, Berger’s theory of humor techniques (1976, 1993) can be utilized to explorecomical effect in manga. Furthermore, Wilson and Sperber’s framework (2004) canalso be used to evaluate the context of situation pictured in manga. The former theoryis imperative since it highlights the function of drawing representation to buildhumorous atmosphere, while the latter functions to decode the meaning and purposeof humor created by manga creators. To conclude, a theoretical contribution can bewithdrawn from the discussion in this study. However, to really measure Japanese’scognitive and cultural values of humor expression, further application of this analysistool needs to be established in a wider and more comprehensive set of data.

Abstract

One of the characteristics of Japanese that is different from other languages is the use of the verbs giving and receiving. The variety of verbs of giving and receiving in Japanese is more numerous and involves factors outside the language. In this paper, we discuss how to use the verbs of giving and receiving in terms of internal factors in the Japanese language and culture. By using a qualitative paradigm, the data were analyzed using the verb give-accept. The theories used include Japanese syntactic and semantic theory, sociolinguistics, and Japanese culture. From the results of the analysis, it was found that in understanding its use, it is necessary not only to understand linguistics but also to understand Japanese socio-culture. An understanding of social concepts is needed, especially the dichotomy of social distance “Uchi-Soto” and social status “jogekankei” to determine the variety and style of verbs used. Cultural factors about empathy are also important to determine the level of empathy that a speaker gives based on his point of view.

Abstract

Shabondama is a children's song whose lyrics are composed by Ujo Noguchi. This song tells about a game of soap balloons. Interestingly, even though it tells about children's play, this song seems mysterious. There are nuances of sadness when listening to this song. The diction used has a negative connotation, unlike most other children's songs which are cheerful and use words that have a positive connotation. This is what motivates the writer's interest in examining more deeply what the real meaning is contained in the song. The semiotic theory of Riffaterre's poetry was used to study it. Through the process of heuristic reading, hermeneutic reading, and intertext studies, the result shows that the meaning contained in this song is helplessness or weakness.

Abstract

Dokkai is a Japanese text reading comprehension course. In practice, students learning Japanese have difficulty understanding the contents of the text. This difficulty, in some cases, was caused not only by their weakness in understanding dokkai material, but also because of their lack of knowledge about how to learn dokkai. In order for the purpose of understanding reading to be achieved, learners must be able to optimize their knowledge and skills in reading such as good understanding of Japanese characters, vocabulary, grammatical mastery of Japanese, topics, and knowing dokkai learning methods and strategies. This can be achieved if the learning strategy can cover all the things needed in teaching dokkai. Through literature studies and surveys on the difficulties and desires of learners in teaching dokkai, this paper proposes a learning strategy called an integrated comprehensive learning strategy.

This paper examines the use of deixis in Japanese. Deixis is one of the language phenomena whose frequency of occurrence in speech activities is many and varied. Basically, there are three types of deixis, namely person, spatial, and time. There are now two additional deixis, social deixis and discourse. This paper attempts to recognize the characteristics of Japanese deixis. With the aim that the data obtained is more varied, the data of this paper does not come from one source, but from various sources on the internet. By using the Pragmatic approach and theories about deixis (Fillmore, 1975; Hasegawa, 2012; Kuno & Kaburaki, 1977; Levinson, 1983; Lyons, 1977; Wetzel, 1988), this paper concludes that social and psychological contexts play a significant role very important in the use of Japanese language deixis. Abstract

Examining literary texts, especially poetry or song lyrics, is generally always related to the problem of meaning. This is a natural thing because poetry is always conveyed in indirect language. Nevertheless, poetry research should understand more than just the meaning of poetry; more critical is how to manage understanding, imagination, and the role of the plurality of texts in uncovering its significance. This research is in line with that. Namely, it aims to examine the significance and appreciation of the lyrical text of a children's song entitled Nanatsu no Ko by Noguchi Ujo. This study uses the text semiology approach or textual narrative analysis proposed by Roland Barthes. The data analysed is the Lexia, the units of reading that comprise the entire text. The lexias have been determined and then analysed using five narrative codes: hermeneutic, proaretic, semic, symbolic, and references codes. This study also uses significance analysis (denotation and connotation) to understand the semic code and connotation of the text. The results of this study found that the significance of the text is a message of criticism about the author's disappointment with Japan's modernisation policy which abandoned the original identity of the Japanese nation. This significance is obtained through the analysis of narrative codes which show the role of plural texts, even though they are conveyed in the form of children's song lyrics, with simple and easy-to-understand diction and arrangement.
