This article discusses how the language translation is utilized in the city name riddles presented by Indonesian speakers. This research is descriptive qualitative. Data in the form of city name riddles were collected from three videos on Kampung Inggris LC and Kampung Inggris WE YouTube channels which were uploaded in September--October 2021 using simak and catat method. The data is then analyzed by comparing translations of words or phrases in the other languages involved. The results of the analysis show the use of one-word translation forms, nomina phrase translation, verb phrase translation, prepositional phrase translation, and clause translation from English to Indonesian or Javanese. The translation of these words has similarities with the names of cities in Indonesia. Some words represent lexical translations, but others only have similar meanings or are associated with the word in question. This multilingual game indirectly shows the identity of language users and represents certain geographical areas. This research implies the creativity of multilingual games by language users which can be used to support language learning.Artikel ini membahas wujud pemanfaatan terjemahan bahasa dalam teka-teki nama kota yang dibawakan oleh penutur bahasa Indonesia. Abstract

In the digital era, coding skills have become increasingly prevalent and are now taught in schools. This paper aims to illuminate parents' perceptions of coding education for elementary school students in Indonesia. The study focuses on eight parents who enrolled their children in a coding school in Central Java, Indonesia. To gather data, open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were conducted. The collected data were subsequently analyzed thematically. The study revealed that parents held positive perceptions of coding skills for elementary school students. This positivity stemmed from their awareness of the rapid development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the anticipation of the future impact of ICT skills, trust in the institution, and their children's interest in ICT. Furthermore, parents expressed positive perceptions of their children's progress, attributing it to improved coding skills and positive attitudes. They emphasized the importance of mutual collaboration and communication between parents and schools to enhance the learning experience. In addition to offering a coding curriculum, the school provided parents with up-to-date information about ICT through seminars and regular digital content distribution. The collaboration between the school and parents extended to establishing rules regarding the use of mobile phones and PCs to prevent potential harms from excessive device usage. This suggests that the success of coding education for children necessitates effective collaboration between parents and schools.

Abstract

This study investigates EFL pre-service teachers’ use of Google Translate (GT) on a daily basis under three underlying questions: 1) Why do EFL pre-service teachers often use GT? 2) How do they use it on a daily basis? and 3) What are the drawbacks of using GT? Despite its benefits, debates over its use in educational settings remain a prevailing issue. For this reason, a case study approach involving six EFL pre-service teachers in different semesters was employed. To garner the data, an open-ended questionnaire and an interview that was done in several sessions were deployed. Thematic analysis was then utilized to analyze the data. The findings reveal that the EFL pre-service teachers’ excessive use of GT was caused by their lack of vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Quick and easy use of GT and lack of confidence to express their own sentences also encouraged them to use GT excessively. They used GT on a daily basis for both academic and non-academic purposes. They also incorporated GT with other applications, especially for doing academic assignments, since they realized that GT was sometimes unreliable. Their background knowledge of English played an important role in examining the translation results of GT. The EFL pre-service teachers have been aware that using GT excessively could decrease their learning ability, and they should enhance their English proficiency to effectively use GT. It implies that GT can assist EFL pre-service teachers’ learning by primarily deploying their own knowledge and skills and only utilizing GT for enhancement.

However, after the pandemic era, how the ‘online’ generation of EFL pre-service teachers perceived their teaching practicum remains unexplored. This current study shed some light on how the ‘online’ generation of EFL pre-service teachers perceived their teaching practicum, the challenges the faced, and how ‘online’ learning during the pandemic changed their perspectives. Using narrative inquiry, the data of this study was gathered from seven graduates of English language education department who experienced online learning during the pandemic but had their teaching practicum offline. The data was collected through open-ended questionnaire and in-depth interview to elicit the story from their experiences during their enrolment in teaching practicum. The collected data were analysed thematically. The findings showed that the EFL pre-service teachers perceived positively on offline teaching practicum. Despite the challenges, they were more motivated to learn and improve their capability. Online learning during the pandemic has improved their ability in integrating technology in their teaching which boost their confidence. It also changed their belief that teaching can be flexible and adaptable to any condition. For that purposes, teachers should be creative and always improve their capability.

Abstract

Google Docs has been reported by many researchers as a tool that facilitates EFL students’ performance enhancement in writing class, but the facts in using this tool from teachers’ point of view in managing a writing class still lack attention. This article aims to describe how Google Docs can assist EFL teachers in managing writing classes as well as the strategies that can be carried out to optimize the use of this tool. Using narrative inquiry, this study employed a teacher’s narratives and documentation of activities on Google Docs. Thematic coding was done to highlight meaningful experiences. It revealed that Google Docs assisted both students and teachers in terms of proofreading, giving feedback, and recording students’ activities. However, during the use of this tool, sort of challenges might hinder students’ progress, such as students’ ignorance of the helpful features and failure in complying with the instructions. Therefore, English teachers can prepare some strategies i.e. giving clear rules and instructions, having conferences and synchronous interaction more often on Google Docs, and building up students’ responsibility for the learning progress. It implies that technology itself doesn’t guarantee students’ improvement in writing, but teachers’ and students’ ability and responsibility in using the technology contribute more to the progress.

Abstract

Abstract

The rapid growth of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in education has created an urgent need to understand how future teachers perceive its benefits, risks, and required skills, especially in the Indonesian context. This current study aims to explore Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers’ perspectives toward GenAI and their expectations regarding educational content related to GenAI at teacher training programs. Employing a qualitative approach with phenomenology design, the data in this study were obtained through reflective writings and semi-structured interviews involving pre-service teachers from the English Language Education Department at an Indonesian state Islamic university. The findings of thematic analysis reveal that they perceive GenAI benefits teachers by serving as a brainstorming partner for designing learning activities and saving time, while also supporting students through personalized learning experiences and instant feedback that can enhance their performance. Despite its advantages, GenAI poses challenges such as its occasional unreliability for teachers and potential overreliance that may hinder original thinking and professional growth. Meanwhile, overreliance on AI could lower students’ interaction and critical thinking, increase plagiarism risk, and foster the perception that AI is more capable than teachers. Teacher training programs are supposed to address it by focusing on three aspects, namely GenAI literacy, pedagogical knowledge, and ethical considerations. The findings imply that teacher education programs must systematically integrate GenAI literacy, pedagogical application, and ethical guidance to develop competence in leveraging AI effectively while maintaining critical thinking, thoughtful instructional autonomy, and responsible professional practice.
