Abstract

This study analyzes the 2024 U.S. presidential election debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris using the Interpersonal Function framework, specifically Exchange Structure (Move) from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The analysis identifies five Move patterns: "K1", "K2^K1", "K1^K2F", "K1^K2F^K1F", and "A1", along with one dynamic move pattern: Challenge and Response to Challenge (CH-RCH). The findings reveal that Donald Trump adopts a more authoritative and responsive stance in the debate, frequently assuming the role of Primary Knower (K1) to assert his knowledge and authority. He is more engaged in responding to challenges (RCH) rather than initiating them, indicating a focus on defending his credibility. In contrast, Kamala Harris actively challenges (CH) Trump's statements, often taking the Secondary Knower (K2) role by questioning or scrutinizing his claims before asserting her own position. However, she also assumes the Primary Knower (K1) role at times to establish her authority. Trump's debate strategy is centered on defending and reinforcing his credibility, while Harris employs a more confrontational approach, challenging Trump's assertions to cast doubt on his statements. This study contributes to the understanding of power dynamics and interactional strategies in political debates through an SFL-based discourse analysis.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of Chinese culture in alcoholic beverage advertisements from 1931 in the Dutch East Indies using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory. Advertisements are not only understood as promotional media but can also be interpreted culturally; through an analysis of the relationship between signifiers and signifieds in both visual and linguistic elements, this research explores how these elements construct the identity of the Chinese community in such advertisements during the colonial period. The data were obtained from Chinese-language newspaper archives from 1931 housed in the National Library, which contain advertisements for alcoholic beverages, and were analyzed to uncover the constructed cultural meanings. The findings indicate that the representation of Chinese identity in these advertisements emphasizes perceived health benefits of the products, the use of specific symbolic imagery on labels, and the portrayal of modernity associated with purchasing power; thus, these advertisements function as a space for constructing Chinese cultural identity within the discourse of the colonial era.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of disability in the children’s storybook Chuskit Goes to School by Sujatha Padmanabhan. The study is grounded in the importance of children’s literature as a medium for shaping understanding of inclusion, educational rights, and acceptance of diversity. This research aims to describe how disability is framed in the story and how such framing contributes to the understanding of inclusive education. This study used a qualitative method with Gamson and Modigliani’s framing analysis model. The data consisted of dialogues, narratives, and visual elements related to disability, educational access, social responses, and Chuskit’s environment. The data were analyzed through framing devices and reasoning devices. The findings show that the story initially presents disability through limitation and exclusion, but gradually shifts toward an inclusive perspective by emphasizing Chuskit’s abilities, equal rights, and participation in education. The main barrier is not Chuskit’s physical condition, but an inaccessible environment. This study implies that the story reflects the social model of disability and presents inclusion as a shared responsibility.

Abstract

News reporting does not merely convey facts but also realizes social evaluation through linguistics choices employed in news texts. This study analyzes the realization of attitude in the news coverage of Tempo.co concerning the controversy surrounding Bahlil Lahadalia’s doctoral program and to reveal how evaluative patterns represents the media’s stance toward the actors and intitutions involved in the debate over academic legitimacy. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using discourse analysis based on Appraisal Theory, paticulary the attitude subsystem comprising affect, judgement, and appreciation. The data consist of 282 evaluative clauses identified in 25 news articles published between October 16, 2024, and March 22, 2025. The findings show that judgement is the most dominant type of attitude, occurring in 218 clauses (77%), followed by appreciation (45 clauses; 16%) and affect (19 clauses; 7%). The dominance of judgement indicates that the news frames the issue as matter of compliance with academic norms, scientific integrity, and institutional accountability. Most evaluations are realized through inscribed attitude and attributed to external sources possessing symbolic authority. These findings suggest that evaluative language in Tempo’s reporting constructs a normative framework of academic legitimacy in the public sphere.

Abstract

Social media is now a means of communication, information search, and interaction. One of the most widely used platforms is social media X. On this platform, users can not only share information but also freely upload various types of content, including photos and videos. The content published is also very diverse, ranging from general topics to explicit content, including vulgar and even pornographic material, without any strict restrictions from the platform. One example is the X social media account of June Liu, an adult actress from China with more than 1.7 million followers, making her one of the most influential figures in the digital world. Through this platform, users can participate in discussions by commenting on each post. In these interactions, affective expressions often appear, reflecting a wide range of emotions, both positive ones that show appreciation or pleasant emotional responses and negative ones that show dislike or unpleasant emotional responses. Affect itself is one of the components in the Appraisal system that refers to the expression of emotions in language, either directly or indirectly. In this study, data in the form of Mandarin comments were collected using purposive sampling and analysed using content analysis. The results of the study show that two types of affect emerge, namely: (1) positive affect with the categories of happiness, security, and satisfaction, and (2) negative affect with the category of dissatisfaction.
