Abstract

The Betawi language, which is the indigenous language of the original inhabitants of Jakarta, is currently in a precarious state due to rapid advancements and changes within the city's social and cultural landscape. This creates an urgent need for robust and effective strategies to conserve this linguistic heritage. The concern is rooted in the fear that the extinction of the Betawi language would result in the failure to transmit valuable Betawi traditions, technology, cultural norms, and customs to subsequent generations. Such a loss would signify the decay of a rich and unique civilization. This study is designed to assess the current health and vitality of the Betawi language, drawing upon the disciplines of Social Semiotics, Demography, and Sociology for its methodological framework. Rather than relying exclusively on quantitative data, this research employs a qualitative approach to capture the subtleties, nuances, and specific preferences related to the language's use and significance. The study's findings point out that the Betawi language is in an even more vulnerable state now than it has been in the past, and this decline has severe ramifications for the Betawi community. Despite these challenges, educational interventions show promise to aid in the preservation of the language. Going forward, it is imperative to develop a well-rounded strategy for the preservation of the Betawi language that involves collaboration from a variety of stakeholders across different sectors

Abstract

This research aims to explore how the Betawi language impacts the speech patterns of adolescents in Jakarta. Utilizing qualitative approach and descriptive analytics, the study focuses on words within sentences that show Betawi interference, categorized into affixation, reduplication, composition, and acronyms. Key findings reveal significant Betawi influence in the areas of affixation and reduplication. For instance, words were often modified with Betawi-inspired prefixes, suffixes, or confixes, and a specific form of repetition, 'dwilingga,' was also evident. Interestingly, no Betawi interference was found in composition and acronyms. This suggests Betawi language has a selective influence on speech morphology, primarily affecting affixation and reduplication. The study provides valuable insights for future research on linguistic influences in multi-ethnic and multi-lingual settings like Jakarta

Abstract

The Betawi language, akin to many global languages, is on the brink of fading due to various factors, one being the evolution of civilization. This decline jeopardizes several facets of the native Betawi culture. Hence, efforts to maintain and preserve the Betawi language are imperative. The challenge lies in understanding the extensive scope of Betawi's linguistic and textual context. Thus, it's crucial to develop a targeted strategy that pinpoints the primary elements influenced by the degradation and endangerment of the language, particularly in the Betawi community. This study identifies these elements after extensive on-field research, spanning over a year with round-the-clock observations. The research found that a sociological qualitative analysis, especially focusing on society's social evaluation, is the most effective method. Consequently, five key areas were identified to analyze the repercussions of the language's decline: linguistic aspects, individual identity, inter-generational communication, knowledge transfer, and economic implications
