Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of 'Experiential Learning’ (ExL) on the students’ reading comprehension at MA Nurul Islam Pungging, Mojokerto, East Java, Indonesia. The pre-experimental design was used in this study. The research samples consisted of 32 students from Class XI-IPA 2, with one representative from experimental group, chosen using a purposive sampling technique. The data were analyzed using the t-test and the analysis test was performed using the ITEMAN software. The results showed the Sig. value of (Sig. (2-tailed)) was .003, which was less than the level of significance of .05. It was determined that the null hypothesis (Ho) was ‘rejected’, and that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was ‘accepted’. Then, it was discovered that, on average, the post-test group had a mean of 88.4, which was significantly higher than the mean of the pre-test group, which was 75.6. It has been determined that Experiential Learning (ExL) is effective in improving the students’ reading comprehension. Students’ academic performance may be improved if teachers are encouraged to use ExL to teach the concept of teaching approach. So, other researchers are suggested to investigate similar research by applying ExL in other methods and other English skills.

Abstract

The goal of this study was to find out how effective a Moodle-based Learning Management Systems (LMS) work for post-graduate students at STKIP PGRI Sidoarjo who are taking a “Article Writing for Journal” subject. To reach that goal, we used total sampling in an experimental method with a pre-test and post-test design for two groups. The students who took part in the study were post-graduate students in the third semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. There were two groups, and each group had 12 students in it. The researchers gave the students a pre-test and a post-test about “Article Writing” as the products to get the data. Then, the researcher used a t-test to see if the model had an effect on the data. The students who were taught using a Blended method that used LMS Moodle and those who were only taught in a virtual class were both better at writing than those who were only taught in a virtual class. SPSS version 26 was used to look at data from the pre- and post-tests. The Manova test and the Normalized gain were used to look at the data (N-gain). Manova's results showed that there was a significant difference in how well students learned to write in English. This means that the treatment that included Moodle-based e-learning and only face-to-face classes has had a big impact on students’ English writing skills.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate the effectiveness of ‘Canva for Education’ and the students preceptions at MTs Sabilunnajah Prambon, Sidoarjo in the academic year 2020/2021. The research used a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and posttest design. The treatment was conducted after the pre-test and before the post-test to the 48 students of class IX as the chosen sample of this study by using purposive sampling. The data instruments of this study were test and questionnaire. The research showed that ‘Canva for Education’ was effective in improving the students’ writing skills for procedure text. Then, based on the reliability of the questionnaire which was measured by SPSS 26, the Cronbach’s Alpha (α) statistical test showed the value was > 0.5. It could be concluded the variable perception of the students’ perceptions towards the use of ‘Canva for Education’ could be said to be reliable due to the Cronbach’s Alpha value is > 0.5, (p-value > 0.5 = 30.8 > 0.5). In other words, the students’ perception toward use of ‘Canva for Education’ in writing procedure text gave several impacts on improving their writing skills and they felt enthusiastic about learning by using ‘Canva for Education’.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the complex dynamic emotions underlying learners’ Willingness to Communicate (WtC) in the classroom interaction. Utilizing Dornyei’s (2014) Retrodictive Qualitative Modeling (RQM), we embarked with some steps: identifying learners’ archetypes, highlighting the dynamic patterns of emotions interacting to other components, and setting up signature dynamics. Eighteen participants studying English participated in two task-based instructions. Of eighteen learners of English department, we took five participants relying on their salient archetypes. We utilized K-means cluster analysis to group the learners’ archetypes that was computed by SPSS 20. Additionally, in-depth interview was carried out on the elected participants to get a thick description of the emotional states and other components underpinning L2 WtC. The results reveal twofold: (1) the participants’ dynamic patterns of emotions interacting with the classroom environment explicate the variability and fluctuation of learners’ WtC, (2) the variety of signature dynamics provided fine-grained components underlying learners’ WtC. Furthermore, the implication for further study and pedagogy is elucidated later. Key words: complex dynamic systems, emotions, Willingness to Communicate, Retrodictive Qualitative Modeling
