Abstract

Today, Indonesia is still export fresh agriculture product with low selling price and competitive power than processed product with higher selling price.  The condition also observed for sweet potato that exported in the fresh form with low selling price and in turn lowering the competitive power of this product.  Province of West Java is one of sweet potato production center.  In 2009, “Cilembu” sweet potato becomes leading product of this commodity group that mostly produced in Subang Regency.  Market destination of “Cilembu” is not only for  domestic demand but also exported to many destination countries including Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hongkong, and Singapore, but selling in the fresh form.  Due to the large potential, it is important to examine the competitive power of the commodity and effect of government policy on “Cilembu” farming in Subang Regency.  The research study was selected on purposive basis. The data analyzed using Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) and sensitivity analysis. The result indicated that “Cilembu” farming in Sumedang Regency is profitable both financial and economic and has good competitive power (either comparative or competitive advantage).  Government policy on domestic input is not effective yet because producer must pay higher price on the input than it should be.  The policy is effective for tradable input due to subsidy. Output policy has restrictive nature due to export taxes and no subsidy for the commodity. Sensitivity analysis show that increasing of labor wage and changing on exchange rate is not affect competitive and comparative advantage, while decreasing on output will affect on competitive advantage (comparative advantage still exist).

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study were (1) to analyze the molasses based bioethanol production in Central Java Province and (2) to analyze the non-financial and financial feasibility of this bioethanol processing activity.  To analyze the financial feasibility this study used investment criteria namely net present value, internal rate of return, net benefit-cost ratio, and discounted pay back period while to analyze the changes of cost and benefit in bioethanol manufacturing activity this study used the switching value analysys.  The results of this study showed that bioethanol manufacturing activity in Sub-Province of Sukoharjo and Pati were financially feasible and can be considered by investors in selecting similar business. But on The other side, the supply of molasses as the raw material in that location is important, so they need to make partnership with the suppliers. The result for switching value analysis showed that the decreasing of production or price of bioethanol more sensitive than the others (increasing of variable input cost for molasses).  There was no negative effect from the production activity because the waste from the bioethanol manufacturing is not hazardous for the surrounding area.

Abstract

The research focuses on the cattle breeding business in Palon Village, Jepon District, and Blora Regency, which is still considered a secondary source of income by the farmers despite the region's reputation as one of the leading beef cattle producers in Central Java. This perception significantly influences the way farmers manage their cattle breeding businesses. The study analyzes beef cattle breeding operations' cost and income structure. A purposive sample of 30 farmers was selected for the research. Descriptive analysis was used to process the data, cost and revenue structure analysis, and return per cost analysis. The research results show that all breeders use green feed. The cost of providing feed is the largest in beef cattle breeding, reaching 51.13%. Beef cattle breeders also still use family resources, so the contribution of non-cash costs to total costs is significant, reaching 81.16%. Income from cash costs is positive, so farmers still consider this business profitable (farmers do not consider the resources owned by farmers). Considering the total costs, the beef cattle breeding business is inefficient. The capital allocation invested in this nursery business has not provided commensurate returns compared to other sectors. Apart from that, this business can also not provide wages to family workers equivalent to wages for a person-day (HOK).

Abstract

The group of female farmers (KWT) in Nagrak District, Sukabumi cultivates medicinal plant commodities, including ginger. Up to now, the KWT members sold ginger as fresh ginger, simplicia, and health drink. Since the price of fresh ginger and simplicia tends to fluctuate, the farmers’ income is also varied. A ginger processing innovation is required to optimize ginger utilization and increase farmers' income. The purpose of this community service activity was to provide education of zero waste ginger utilization and processing for KWT members in Nagrak District, Sukabumi, West Java. The methods included measuring the knowledge of KWT members about ginger processing through questionnaires, training in ginger processing to produce several derivative products by applying zero waste concept and evaluating the effectiveness of the training. The activity was attended by 29 KWT members from six KWTs in the Nagrak District, Sukabumi. The impact of this activity was increasing the knowledge of KWT members about zero waste concept in ginger processing. The number of participants who were aware of the zero waste concept for ginger processing was increased by 93.22%. Meanwhile, the number of participants who possess knowledge about the diversification of ginger products increased by 62.76%. As a conclusion from this activity, the ability of KWT members to process ginger into a more varied product has increased, shown by the ability of each group to present processed ginger products during competition activities. The increasing of knowledge and skills in ginger processing are expected to increase the income of KWT members.

Abstract

Cocoa replanting with intercrops is a strategy for sustainable cocoa development. Cocoa replanting is expected to impact productivity and production quality and increase selling prices positively. However, there are still many farmers who are reluctant to replant due to concerns about losing sources of income and financing difficulties. The study analyzed the cost and income structure of various replanting models. Based on the survey, there were 88 cocoa farmers as respondents, 51 who replanted and 37 who did not. Through the analysis of cost and income structures, it is known that replanting cocoa can be a rational option for farmers who want to increase their income because replanting can increase the productivity of cacao. In addition, the income from the intercrops has also been shown to replace the income of the cocoa lost at the time of the replanting. Analyzing the partial profit balance shows that bananas and chili are profitable crops to plant as intercrops on cocoa groves when replanting. For farmers who plant bananas as an intercrop, the income from bananas can cover unloading costs, seed costs and cocoa planting costs within one year
