Abstract

Culture is one of the factors that influence resilience. Cultural diversity plays an important role for individuals in adapting to difficult conditions and situations. The purpose of this article was to analytically describe the differences in cultural resilience of students’ University of PGRI Palembang based on indigenous South Sumatran ethnic groups and immigrant ethnic groups in South Sumatran. The respondents of this study were students’ Guidance and Counseling study program of University of PGRI Palembang in semester II, IV, VI, and VIII of the indigenous tribes of South Sumatra with a total number of respondents as many as 80 students. The data collection method in this study used a cultural resilience questionnaire which was designed based on the theory developed by Clauss Ehlers and Reivich K and Shatte which consisted of six aspects of resilience, namely emotion regulation, impulse control, achievement, global coping, adaptive coping and socio-cultural support. The data analysis method used in this study by the Anova test. The results showed that there was no difference in resilience between students’ indigenous and immigrant in South Sumatran.

Abstract

The researchers had found that learning reading are (1) investigating whether there was a significant difference of students’ reading comprehension achievement before and after being taught by using Guessing Meaning from Context strategy, (2) findingout in terms of strategies for Guessing Meaning from Context which strategies produced better achievement by the students.The researchers carried out quantitative study with one group Pre-test Post-test Design, involving one class as experimental class. The instrument in this research was reading test. The data analysis showed there was a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught by using Guessing Meaning from Context strategy. Then, surrounding words, pictures, experience, and imagination as the strategiesincreased the most than the otherstrategies. Hypothesis test showed that the significance value (2- tailed) was 0.000 (p<0.05). It could be concluded that null-hypothesis was rejected. So, the result of the research inferred Guessing Meaning from Context to be able to improve the students’ reading comprehension in all aspects. Keywords: guessing meaning from context, improving, reading skill.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the speaking proficiency of students in the hospitality field and identify the specific requirements they have for speaking English. The research design employed for this study was qualitative, utilizing a case study approach. To gather data regarding the students' speaking proficiency and their requirements for speaking English in the hospitality field, the researcher employed open-ended questions during data collection with the participants. Thematic analysis, using a coding system, was used to analyze the data and identify patterns related to the students' speaking proficiency and their necessities for speaking English in the hospitality field. The findings of this study revealed that the students' speaking proficiency in the hospitality field served three main purposes: (1) meeting content-related needs, (2) utilizing appropriate learning media, and (3) addressing specific topics. Additionally, the study identified that the necessities of hospitality students in speaking English were focused on facilitating the learning process and optimizing their ability to speak English in the context of the hospitality field.

Abstract

The learning process requires supportive elements, such as reading materials, to be effective. Providing appropriate reading materials involves adjusting the learning environment and considering the characteristics of the students. This enables teachers to motivate and guide students in constructing their language skills. Additionally, as a resident of Palembang, it is important to learn about cultural heritage to preserve the local culture. Songket, a traditional textile originating from Palembang, is one such cultural heritage. Utilising a booklet as a medium to convey information about Songket to students can enhance teaching and learning activities. The objective of this research was to develop reading materials for students by transcribing a Songket video. The researcher employed the Research and Methodology (R&D) method, as modified by Sukmadinata (2015). Data were collected through documentation and interviews. In the limited trial phase, the results indicated that the booklet required revisions in terms of content and design. Experts provided feedback to address inaccuracies in the content and grammatical errors and suggested adding the writer's information and the institution logo to the booklet. In the wider trial phase, experts recommended including additional information about Songket in the booklet before accepting it for printing as reading material. After incorporating all the necessary changes based on the feedback received, the writer concluded that the final product was accepted as suitable reading material for students, providing concise information about Palembang's Songket tradition.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to discuss linguistic strategies in the context of procedure texts, highlighting the appropriate use of language to guide readers through the necessary steps. In this case we can find out the effectiveness of using linguistic strategies in the context of procedural texts in learning language comprehension for students at SMK Negeri 5 Palembang. The research methods used in this research were interviews and questionnaires. The research sample consisted of 29 students consisting of 15 male students and 14 female students. Data collection techniques were carried out using interviews and questionnaires. The results of this research indicate that linguistic strategies are effective for teaching understanding of procedural texts to class X students at SMK Negeri 5 Palembang.

Abstract

This research aims to compare students who receive learning through picture series with students who receive conventional teaching methods. learning recount text used picture series, determined the success of learning interest students' English. Teaching English in Indonesia is learners must be able to communicate with native speakers of the language and understood that English is used as a second language in some state sectors of the nation that function as bridges to other languages, such as trade and education. The research method used in This method is quantitative which used data collection techniques through pretest and post-test at SMP Negeri 1 Pedamaran. Based on this research, the picture series method was used. could have a significant positive impact on English learning, especially in English writing skills. Students become able to write. From the results of this research, students agree that used the series drew method could improve writing skills them, about recount text. the results of their writing practice through a picture series.
