Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ mathematical problem solving ability through using instruction based problem model on the topic of the Pythagorean theorem at the eighth grade students of SMP swasta Tapian Nauli. The research was conducted by applying Class Action Research (CAR) with 25 students as the subject. Instrument of the research was test, questionnaire, and observation. The research consists of two cycles. The first cycle showed (a) the test showed the students’ achievement of the Pythagorean theorem was 75.9, (b) observation sheet showed the average of students’ activities was 58.13, and (c) the observation of class teacher showed the ability of researcher in using instruction based problem model was 100.Furthermore, the second cycle showed (a) the test showed the students’ achievement of the Pythagorean theorem was 84.60, (b) observation sheet showed the average of students’ activities was 80.27, and (c) the observation of class teacher showed the ability of researcher in using instruction based problem model was 100. It’s concluded that instruction based problem model was able to improve students’ mathematical problem solving ability through using instruction based problem model on the topic of the Pythagorean theorem at the eighth grade students of SMP swasta Tapian Nauli.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan efektivitas penggunaan model pembelajaran kontekstual pada kemampuan berpikir kreatif matematis siswa pada topik teorema Pythagoras pada siswa kelas delapan SMP Negeri 9 Padangsidimpuan. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menerapkan metode eksperimen (one group pretest post test design) dengan 27 siswa sebagai sampel dan mereka diambil dengan menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling dari 167 siswa. Observasi dan tes digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data. Berdasarkan analisis deskriptif, ditemukan: (a) rata-rata menggunakan model pembelajaran kontekstual adalah 3,85 (kategori sangat baik) dan (b) kemampuan berpikir kreatif matematis siswa pada topik teorema Pythagoras sebelum menggunakan model pembelajaran kontekstual adalah 53,77 (kategori kurang) dan setelah menggunakan model pembelajaran kontekstual adalah 82,28 (kategori sangat baik). Selanjutnya, berdasarkan statistik inferensial dengan menggunakan pair sample ttest, (SPSS versi 22) dan formulasi N-gain, hasilnya menunjukkan nilai signifikan kurang dari 0,05 (0,000 <0,05) dan g = 0,74 (kategori tinggi). Artinya, menggunakan model pembelajaran kontekstual sangat efektif digunakan pada kemampuan berpikir kreatif matematis siswa pada topik teorema Pythagoras pada siswa kelas delapan SMP Negeri 9 Padangsidimpuan.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the effectiveness of using Realistic Mathematic Education approach in improving students’ communication ability on the topic of triangles at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Padangsidimpuan. The research was conducted by applying experimental method (one group pretest post test design) with 22 students as the sample and they were taken by using cluster random sampling technique from 176 students. Observation and test were used in collecting the data. Based on descriptive analysis, it was found: (a) the average of using Realistic Mathematic Education approach was 3,7 (very good category) and (b) the average of students’ triangles achievement before using Realistic Mathematic Education approach was 64.99 (enough category) and after using Realistic Mathematic Education approach was 78.86 (good category). Furthermore, based on inferential statistic by using pair sample ttest, (SPSS version 22) and N-Gain formulation, the result showed the significant value was less than 0.05 (0.000<0.05) and g= 0.52 (medium category). It means, using Realistic Mathematic Education approach was able to improve students’ communication ability on the topic of triangles with medium category at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Padangsidimpuan.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the effectiveness of using discovery learning model on students’ mathematical communication ability on the topic of trigonometric at the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Lumut. The research was conducted by applying experimental method (one group pretest posttest design) with 33 students as the sample and they were taken by using cluster random sampling technique from 455 students. Observation and test were used in collecting the data. Based on descriptive analysis, it was found: (a) the average of using discovery learning model was 3.89 (very good category) and (b) the average of students’ trigonometric achievement before using discovery learning model was 43.84 (fail category) and after using discovery learning model was 88.78 (very good category). Furthermore, based on inferential statistic by using pair sample ttest, (SPSS version 22) and N-Gain formulation, the result showed the significant value was less than 0.05 (0.000<0.05) and g= 0.81 (high category). It means, using discovery learning model gave high effect on students’ mathematical communication ability on the topic of trigonometric at the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Lumut
