Abstract

In the context of English as a foreign language (EFL) and of English as a second language (ESL), writing might be a very hard language skill for learners to master. To succeed in writing, in presenting their ideas, the students need to equip themselves with at least a number of fundamental abilities such as how to create topic sentence, controlling idea, supporting sentences, concluding sentence, etc. This research was primarily conducted to improve students’ academic writing skill through the application of Task-Based Learning (TBL) approach and to find out the students’ responses after learning academic writing skill through the application of TBL approach. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was performed in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four steps, namely planning, action, observation and reflection. There are 21 students as the subject of the research. The analysis of quantitative data showed that the students’ mean score increased continuously from 64,86 in the pretest, 74,71 in the posttest of cycle 1 to 86,14 in the posttest of cycle 2. The analysis of qualitative data showed that the application of TBL approach could increase the students’ interest, motivation and involvement in the academic writing classes. It is advisable that teachers or lecturers of English language should try applying TBL approach as one of approaches in order to improve their students’ academic writing skill.

Abstract

This research was primarily conducted to prove that the combination of Task-Based Learning (TBL) approach and audio visual aids could improve the students’ academic writing skills and to describe the students’ responses after learning academic writing skill through the combination of TBL approach and audio visual aids. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was performed in two cycles (cycle 1 and cycle 2). Each cycle consisted of four meetings. The subject of the research is the fourth semester students of English Language Education Study Program of Catholic University of Saint Thomas North Sumatera in the Academic Year of 2017/2018. There are 21 students as the subject of the research. The analysis of quantitative data showed that the students’ mean score increased continuously from 66,05 in the pretest, 78,62 in the posttest of cycle 1 to 88,81 in the posttest of cycle 2. The analysis of qualitative data showed that the learning teaching processes of academic writing skill, particularly writing the English essays through the combination of TBL approach and audio visual aids ran very well. The combination of TBL approach and audio visual aids could also increase the students’ interest, motivation and involvement in the classroom activities. It is advisable that teachers or lecturers of English language should try combining TBL approach and audio visual aids to improve their students’ academic writing skills

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan menerapkan model pembelajaran Make A Match bagi siswa SD di Kelurahan Tunggurono Kota Binjai. Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan selama 2 (dua) hari yakni pada hari Sabtu-Minggu, 25-26 Agustus 2018 pukul 16.00 WIB-18.00 WIB. Peserta didik dalam pelatihan ini adalah siswa SD di Kelurahan Tunggurono Kota Binjai dengan kisaran usia 6 tahun-12 tahun. Adapun jumlah peserta didik dalam pelatihan ini adalah sebanyak 16 orang. Model pembelajaran Make A Match (Mencari Pasangan) merupakan model pembelajaran yang dikembangkan oleh Lorn Curran pada tahun 1994 di mana setiap siswa mendapat sebuah kartu (bisa soal atau jawaban) lalu secepatnya mencari pasangan yang sesuai dengan kartu yang ia pegang.  Penerapan model pembelajaran ini dimulai dengan teknik, yaitu siswa diminta mencari pasangan kartu yang merupakan jawaban atau soal sebelum batas waktunya. Siswa yang dapat mencocokan kartunya diberi poin/nilai. Adapun keuntungan menerapkan model pembelajaran Make A Match (Mencari Pasangan) adalah sebagai berikut: 1) mampu menciptakan suasana aktif dan menyenangkan; 2) materi pembelajaran yang disampaikan lebih menarik perhatian siswa; 3) mampu meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa mencapai taraf ketuntasan belajar; 4) suasana kegembiraan akan tumbuh dalam proses pembelajaran; 5) kerja sama antar siswa terwujud dengan dinamis; dan 6) munculnya dinamika gotong royong yang merata di seluruh siswa. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi positif bagi masyarakat khususnya bagi siswa SD di Kelurahan Tunggurono Kota Binjai dan menciptakan kebermanfaatan antara Universitas Katolik Santo Thomas dengan masyarakat secara umum.

Abstract

This research was mainly conducted in order to prove that Shadowing technique could improve listening comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP St Petrus Medan in the Academic Year of 2022/2023 and to describe their responses towards the implementation of Shadowing technique in the processes of learning listening comprehension. The quantitative data analysis showed the mean score increase from 53,9 in Pre-test with 27% of the students got score ≥72, in Formative-test 65,3 with 57% of the students got score ≥72, and 82,6 in Post-test with 93% of the students got score ≥72. Furthermore, the students’ responses toward the technique of the teaching learning process sound great because above 90% of the students are interested, motivated and understand the lesson with Shadowing technique. This is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research findings showed that teaching listening comprehension by using Shadowing technique to the eighth-grade students of SMP St Petrus Medan could improve their listening comprehension. It is advisable that English teachers try applying Shadowing technique in teaching listening comprehension.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pola asuh orang tua terhadap hasil belajar matematika pada kelas 4 SD Negeri 060833 Medan Petisah tahun ajaran 2021/2022. Pada penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan metode kuantitatif. Populasi yang digunakan yakni pada kelas 4 SD Negeri 060833 Medan Petisah yang berjumlah 32 siswa. Pengambilan sampel dengan menggunakan sampling sensus. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa hasil yang diperoleh dari pengujian korelasi dapat di lihat pada koefisien korelasi sebesar  0,620 ≥  0,349 maka dapat disimpulkan hipotesis altervative ( ) diterima yaitu terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan antara pola asuh orang tua terhadap hasil belajar siswa SD Negeri 060833 Medan Petisah. Dapat juga dilihat dari hasil pengujian uji-t dimana ≥ yaitu sebesar 4,325 dan sebesar 2,042 , maka hipotesis (diterima. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa adanya pengaruh positif yang singnifikan antara pola asuh orang tua dan hasil belajar matematika pada kelas 4 SD Negeri 060833 Medan Petisah tahun ajaran 2021/2022.
