Abstract

Subject and verb agreement is the grammatical rule that the subject and the verb used in a sentence match each other. The third semester students of English Language Education Study Program of Nias Raya University faced the problem in subject-verb agreement aspect. The objective of this research was investigating subject-verb agreement made by the third semester students of English Language Education of Nias Raya University with the number of students was 37 persons. The primary source of the data was the students’ papers in writing sentences. The errors made were determined by the rule of subject-verb agreement (Greenbaum & Nelson, 2002). The result of data analysis was the third semester students made the errors on subject–verb agreement used or linked by: -number and person, -and, -or, -neither…nor, -preposition: with, as well as, -collective nouns, -indefinite pronouns, -quantity phrases, -singular nouns ending in –s, -relative pronoun: who, that, -pronoun: what, -introductory there, -citation and titles. The result of this research is expected being significant for English lecturer to search for solution for this problem

Abstract

The aims of this research were to find out kinds of translation method and to find out the most dominants kinds of translation method used by Harum Wibowo in translating short story “The Gift of the Magi”. This research was conducted by using Qualitative research to analyze the translation methods used by Harum Wibowo in translating short story “The Gift of the Magi”. The data were analyzed by reading both English and Indonesian version of the short story classifying each sentence according to each translation methods and explaining why the utterances are included into each translation methods. There were 125 utterances in short story “The Gift of the Magi”. The result shows that there were 6 kinds of 8 translation methods found in translation short story “The Gift of the Magi”. the translation methods used by the translator in translating short story, word for word translation (2 utterances), literal translation (34 utterances), faithful translation (33 utterances), free translation (53 utterances), idiomatic translation (1 utterance), and communicative translation (2 utterances). Free translation method is more frequently used because the translator tried to make the target reader understand as far as possible. These results are expected will give a new insight for teacher and students about translation method and more be carefully in using translation method in order to make a better translation.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the connotative meaning and the type of connotative meaning found in the twelve lyrics of linkin parks’s songs. This research is designed in qualitative research with descriptive approach. The source of this research is the twelve lyrics of linkin park’s songs. The data is analyzed by using the technique of the data analysis: data condensation, data display, drawing and verifying conclusions. The result of data analysis shows that: there are 30 connotative meaning used in the twelve lyrics and the dominant types of connotative meaning is associative meaning. Besides, it is found 16 associative meaning, 4 allusive meaning, 3 collocative meaning, 7 affective meaning, 0 reflective meaning and attitudional meaning. Based on the finding, it is concluded that the connotative meaning found is carried within words, phrase and sentences in twelve lyrics of linkin parks’s song. In this research, the researcher also wants to suggest the lecturer or the English teacher to lead the students’ use the connotative meaning theory as the material of teaching and learning and also can be implemented as material for increasing the students’ ability in mastering the vocabullary and also connotative meaning material can be propossed to extend students ability in recognizing the meaning of words not only which has provided in dictionary but also which has associated in another aspect.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding and describing types of questioning strategies used by English teacher. This research was designed by using qualitative descriptive method. The instruments of data collection were observation and interview. After analyzing the data, researcher found that the questioning strategies were used by English teacher during classroom interaction. The questioning strategies used were: (1) procedural question, (2) convergent question, (3) divergent question. Furthermore, the purposes English teacher used questioning strategies were: (1) to make sure that the students were in good health and the students’ readiness before starting the lesson, (2) to attract students’ concentration, (3) as effort to achieve the learning objectives, (4) as the stimulus to think critically (5) as the effort to provide opportunities to express the ideas. Therefore, researcher concluded that questioning strategies used by English teacher was to know how far students understood about the material and to make sure whether the learning objectives have been achieved or not. Furthermore, the researcher suggests that English teacher could use questioning strategies to elicit students’ response during teaching and learning process.
