Abstract

Teacher feedback plays an important role in improving student’s writing skill. This study aimed to analysis the feedback technique given by the teacher and the reason for its application. This research was a descriptive study designed to provide a detailed explanation of the implementation of feedback technique given by the teacher at SMA N 15 Semarang. In addition, the data was collected using two instruments; document and interview. There were two finding of the research. Firstly, teacher used the minimal marking technique to provide feedback to students. The feedback provided was intended to help students work on their grammatical errors or writing form using symbol to shorten the correction, such as “P” for punctuation, “Cap” for capitalization, “Spell” for spelling, and etc. Secondly, the teacher employed this technique because it was effective and time-saving. Additionally, it also helps students to understand easily their mistakes. However, as the study used a small sample size, the results require further exploration. Therefore, the minimal marking technique could be applied more broadly in EFL classroom to assess its wider effectiveness.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The ability of tour guides to use contextual, communicative, and discourse-based English remains limited, resulting in information delivery that has not yet been able to create meaningful tourism experiences for international tourists in a professional, adaptive manner oriented toward the needs of today’s global travelers. This program aims to enhance tour guides’ competencies in integrating tourism discourse, storytelling, and English tourism terminology as effective communication strategies in the global tourism era. The PKM employed interactive training, guiding simulations, field practice at tourist sites, and continuous mentoring as its main methods. The implementation stages included needs analysis, training on tourism discourse and storytelling concepts, practice in using English tourism terminology, and evaluation and reflection. The results indicate significant improvements in tour guides’ confidence, communicative competence, and narrative skills in conveying cultural, historical, and local uniqueness information in a more coherent and engaging manner. The main conclusion is that a discourse-based teaching approach is effective in strengthening tour guides’ communicative competence and contributes to enhancing the image of community-based tourist destinations in a sustainable way.

Abstract

School committees play a strategic role in community-based educational governance. However, many school committees still lack a comprehensive understanding of their roles, functions, and mechanisms for building partnerships with schools and the wider community. This community service program aimed to empower school committee members through training in institutional management and school-community partnership strategies. The activity was conducted at SD Negeri Jatingaleh 01 in Semarang City, representing the Candisari District area. The approach employed was Participatory Action Learning (PAL) and Capacity Building, comprising several stages: needs assessment, training, assistance in preparing annual work plans, and the formation of a school-community partnership forum. The results showed a significant improvement in the understanding and skills of school committee members, the successful development of annual work programs, and the implementation of collaborative school-community initiatives. This intervention aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The program is recommended for replication in other school clusters with policy support from local governments)

Abstract

This study examines how critical thinking and academic vocabulary (breadth and depth) influence the discourse features of undergraduate essays at Universitas PGRI Semarang and Universitas PGRI Madiun. Using a comparative qualitative design with quantitative indicators, the research analyzed student texts, vocabulary assessments, and interviews to evaluate coherence, cohesion, and argumentative clarity. Findings indicate that higher critical engagement correlates with more stable rhetorical sequencing and a clearer authorial stance. Furthermore, students with stronger vocabulary resources demonstrated more precise lexical choices and varied academic expressions. The comparison reveals that systematic scaffolding at Universitas PGRI Semarang fosters more coherent discourse, whereas irregular instruction at Universitas PGRI Madiun leads to greater variability in writing quality. The results underscore the necessity of an integrated pedagogy that combines critical-thinking development, explicit vocabulary enrichment, and discourse-focused instruction to enhance academic writing in Indonesian EFL contexts.

Abstract

Meaning extends beyond the literal form of language since it is a dynamic system. Defixis is a remarkable pragmatic phenomenon in language usage; it refers to a collection of statements whose meaning is contingent upon characteristics including speaker, place, time, discourse, and social context. Everyday speech, literary works, and creative expressions (such as song lyrics) all include deixis. Songs are great resources for linguistic analysis and language acquisition because they provide rich contextual references, which are a result of the language's genuine usage. There is a dearth of literature on pragmatics in literary and media texts, although there is some study on deixis in song lyrics, especially as it pertains to ELT. The purpose of this research is to dissect the album Being Funny in a Foreign Language for its deixis and the pragmatic roles they play in certain tracks. Based on Levinson's (1983) theory, this research used a qualitative content analysis methodological approach to classify deixis as follows: personal, temporal, geographical, discourse, and social. Five songs were chosen at random using a purposive sample strategy to gather data for the investigation. As a source of information, documentation procedures were used to gather the official lyrics of the five songs. In addition, the data were evaluated by classifying different kinds of deixis and then determining how often each kind occurred. Out of a total of 482 deixis expressions, 455 were found to be personal (94.40%), 2 to be spatial (0.41%), 7 to be temporal (1.45%), 17 to be discourse (3.53%), and 1 to be social (0.21%), according to the findings. The study revealed that personal deixis was the most common form of deixis, with discourse, time, location, and social deixis following closely behind. Each of these types added to the rich contextual meaning found in the song lyrics. This discovery suggests that students' comprehension of pragmatic studies, particularly as it pertains to deixis, might be enhanced by using song lyrics as realistic teaching resources.
