Abstract

Abstracts This article introduces the use of interactive approach in teaching writing, especially paragraph writing. Instead of communicating with the students about the writing product, the teachers of writing subject are mostly correcting the students’ mistakes and errors in writing. The general idea of writing process is considered very important since it is very helpful for the students. The process approach in teaching paragraph writing is not focusing on the writing product but it is focused on the process of writing, so that this suitable approach that suitable to be applied since writing is a series of process. Abstract

This study is specifically focused on the student final project abstract based on genre analysis which covers the study of the generic structure and the linguistic features. The statements of the study are: (1). How do the students of English Education Department of IKIP PGRI Semarang realize the generic structure in their final project abstracts (2). How do they realize the linguistic features in their final project abstracts, and (3). What is the contribution of the result of the study to the English Education Program of IKIP PGRI Semarang. The main purpose of this study is to find out the generic structure and linguistic features of the final project abstracts and analyze the contribution of this study to the English Department. This study applies the descriptive qualitative method. The object of this study is the final project abstracts written by English Education Department students of ‘IKIP PGRI Semarang’. The total of 10 final projects formed the data of this study. The data of the study were analyzed using the genre analysis approach. The first step of data analysis was identifying the Moves which was done by using Linguistic evidence and understanding the texts. The finding shows that only some of the final project abstracts made by the students of IKIP PGRI applied the five Moves. It is found that two Moves are applied in all abstracts, they are Purpose and Method Moves (100%). Situating the research is used in five abstracts (50%). Meanwhile the third move that is the Result Move used in eight abstracts (80%). The Conclusion Move found in five abstracts (50%). The result of the analysis showed that two personal pronouns were found in the final project abstracts. Personal pronouns such as ‘the writer’ and ‘the researcher’ were found in all of the abstracts. Personal pronoun ‘she’ was found in one abstract. Finally, there are only five expressions of hedges that are used in the final project abstracts, they are modal auxiliary verbs, adjectival, adverbial, nominal and Approximators of degree. The suggestions toward this study are (1) The English lecturers should introduce how to create a meaningful text, particularly the abstract as the representation of the research report in good structure for the students based on the theory of genre. (2) The lecturers should improve the teaching and learning process relating to the improvement of academic writing, in this case lecturers who in charge of teaching academic writing. (3) The final project supervisors should put a high concern of genre to be applied in writing the abstract of the final project during the supervision. (4) The English Education department should provide a precise guideline for final project writing.Key words: genre, final project, abstract.

Abstract

This research explores analyse the word speech action by socio-cultural approach that values frequently found in the novel "Totto-Chan: The Girl at the Little Window" by The goal of this speech action study is to analyse speech actions containing sociocultural Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. The study employs Leech's theory of speech acts, which centres on the theory of speech actions. This study uses a qualitative methodology. The data analysis approach utilizes both primary and secondary data, collected from the object of study—in this case, the novel "Totto-Chan: The Girl at the Little Window." The method of collecting data involves sorting and classifying information from study materials, such as books or transcripts, into primary and secondary data categories. Additionally, phrase sentences containing sociocultural components are analyzed. The analysis's findings demonstrate the extent to which a variety of sociocultural elements, including speech action, impact speech action. Trust and culture are the two most important variables influencing speech development and people's attitudes towards speaking up and taking action.

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using English subtitles from the movie "Frozen 2" to enhance students' vocabulary mastery. The study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design and focused on ninth-grade students at SMP PURNAMA 2 SEMARANG. The sample consisted of 25 students selected through purposive sampling. Pre-test and post-test scores were collected to analyze the data. The study found that the use of English subtitles in the movie "Frozen 2" had a significant positive impact on students' vocabulary mastery. The results of the pre-test and post-test scores showed a considerable improvement in vocabulary understanding. The mean pre-test score was 55.36, while the mean post-test score increased to 82.52. The research also assessed the N Gain scores to evaluate the effectiveness of using subtitles in the movie. The average N Gain score was calculated to be 62.08%, indicating that the approach was quite effective in enhancing vocabulary mastery among the students. Furthermore, the study addressed some of the challenges faced by students in vocabulary learning, such as boredom, difficulty in pronunciation, and struggling to remember new vocabulary words. The use of engaging media like movies was highlighted as a way to overcome these challenges and improve students' motivation to learn. In conclusion, the research demonstrated that utilizing English subtitles from the movie "Frozen 2" effectively enhanced students' vocabulary mastery. The N Gain scores reflected a significant improvement in vocabulary understanding, and the approach was found to be quite effective in helping students engage with and remember new vocabulary words.

Abstract

Urgensi penelitian ini berfokus pada Kotbah di hari raya keagamaan Islam dengan kajian paragmatik untuk memberikan pengetahuan dan pemahaman kepada jamaah dan pembaca serta mahasiswa di dalam memaknai sebuah isi kotbah dengan pendekatan perlokusi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan dan mendeskripsikan berbagai jenis tindak tutur dan fungsinya yang terkait dalam isi kotbah tersebut. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan observasi checklist kemudian diklasifikasikan ke dalam beberapa jenis tindak tutur berdasarkan teori Yule yaitu; representatif dengan meliputi lima fungsi: Menyatakan, menginformasikan, mendeskripsikan, mengklarifikasi & menyimpulkan. Diikuti oleh ekspresif dengan tiga fungsi: memuji, berharap & meminta maaf dan direktif dengan empat fungsi: menasihati, meminta, memberitahu, berdoa dan yang terakhir komisif dengan satu fungsi: menjamin. Sampel penelitian ini adalah beberapa konten kotbah hari raya keagamaan Islam seperti: hari raya idul fitri dan hari raya idul adha yang berlangsung di tahun 2024.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate how undergraduate students exercise their critical thinking skills through the phrasing and sentence structure of their analytical writing. This research investigates how students translate their critical faculties into the linguistic choices and rhetorical techniques employed in their written analytical texts. In particular, it has investigated how students engage with critical argument and logic through the phrasing, sentence structure, and text structuring of their writing, as well as the linguistic and rhetorical resources used to communicate processes and outcomes of their thinking. This set of research questions is framed to allow the investigation into the relationship between critical thinking and written expression, whereby it hopes to gain insight into the way students can bridge such a gap in academic writing. The findings will enable pedagogical approaches toward the empowerment of students for better clarity and persuasiveness in communicating their ideas and reasoning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find character and characterization, also character’s development to contribution vocabulary mastery in “Zootopia” movie. the writer implemented a descriptive qualitative method to a analyze character, characterization, and character’s development which are supported by theory and various sources literatures and documents. The first purpose of this study was to find character and characterization, while the finding revealed that there are three important character which are Judy, Nick, and Bellwether. Where Judy has respect, responsibility, fairness, tolerance, wisdom, help each other, and confidence. Then Nick has cunning respect, sympathy, support. While Bellwether has manipulative, high IQ, master strategist. The second purpose was to elaborate the character development, where Judy is from coward to brave, underestimated to reliable, weak to strong. Then Nick is from cunning and sly to trustworthy and helpful, while Bellwether is from unappaciated to powerful, and helpful to betrayal. The third purpose was to present that “Zootopia” movie can contributing in vocabulary mastery, especially using movie as teaching material creates fun atmosphere to motivate the student, so they can improve vocabulary learning efficiently. In the end. the writer expected that this study can be reference in vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

English is essential to learn in today’s world, with numerous methods available for effective acquisition. First English skill that learners’ have to master is listening. Although listening is the first skill to master, however it is challenging to teach English listening in class. Due to the difficulty of teaching English listening, teacher starting to implementing teaching media to teach English. This research aims is to investigate whether using SoundCloud application can enhances students’ listening comprehension. By involving tenth-grader students,72 participant that divided into experiment and control group. Pre-test and Post-test are uses to collect the data. After the data was gathered, the data analyzed via SPSS 26. The result of this study revealed that SoundCloud can improve the students’ listening comprehension. This result was derived from the data that experimental group has higher achievement in listening comprehension rather than control group. To conclude, SoundCloud application is an alternative tool to be implemented in the listening comprehension session.  Additionally, SoundCloud does not only provide an enjoyable way to teach English listening but also significantly boost the students' listening comprehension

Abstract

Teacher feedback plays an important role in improving student’s writing skill. This study aimed to analysis the feedback technique given by the teacher and the reason for its application. This research was a descriptive study designed to provide a detailed explanation of the implementation of feedback technique given by the teacher at SMA N 15 Semarang. In addition, the data was collected using two instruments; document and interview. There were two finding of the research. Firstly, teacher used the minimal marking technique to provide feedback to students. The feedback provided was intended to help students work on their grammatical errors or writing form using symbol to shorten the correction, such as “P” for punctuation, “Cap” for capitalization, “Spell” for spelling, and etc. Secondly, the teacher employed this technique because it was effective and time-saving. Additionally, it also helps students to understand easily their mistakes. However, as the study used a small sample size, the results require further exploration. Therefore, the minimal marking technique could be applied more broadly in EFL classroom to assess its wider effectiveness.
