Abstract

This research reports on the result of a study about ARM (accept, reject and modify) as an alternative technique in teaching speaking at the English department of IKIP PGRI Semarang. In depth research with 2 classes (experimental and control) at the department were conducted to improve the students’ achievement in speaking. The objective of the research is to find out the improvement of students’ speaking achievement after taught through ARM (Accept, Reject and Modify) technique. The researcher applied experimental research which contained 2 activities to collect the data. They were pre-test and post-test. In analyze the data; it was found that there was positive effect of teaching speaking through ARM. For the purpose of the research, the researcher used the significant level at 0, 05 (5%) and the calculation showed that the value of t table = 2, 002 and t test = 9, 56. It meant t test was higher than t table with degree of freedom (df) = 58 was 2, 002. The result of the students’ progress during the teaching and learning process by using ARM technique was good. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that there is the improvement of students’ achievement in speaking through ARM by the second year of English department of IKIP PGRI Semarang and ARM is a good technique for teaching speaking and the students were able to apply this technique well. In line with the result, it is conducted that the use of ARM technique is very beneficial and good feedback to the students in improving students’ skill in speaking. It is recommended that the technique is applied in class regularly and continually because the students were interested in using the technique. By any creative activities arranged, it can be expected that there will be interactive communication between teacher and students in teaching learning process and the students should more practice of speaking in daily life.

Abstract

This study is focused on the Conjunctive Relations found in Oprah Winfrey's speech. In this case, conjunctive relations were analyzed through how Oprah Winfrey realized them. The objectives of this study were (1) to find out types of conjunctive relations found on Oprah Winfrey's speech (2) to find out the dominant type of conjunctive relations found on Oprah Winfrey's speech and what is that mean. To reach those two objectives, the writer used both Halliday and J. R. Martin's theory. There are two categories of conjunction namely external and internal conjunction. Later on, those two categories classified themselves into four types of relations namely additive relation, adversative relation, causal relation, and temporal relation. This study used qualitative design because it is framed in terms of using words instead of numbers. The result showed that there were 106 clauses with conjunctions in Oprah's speech. The internal conjunction found were about 52 clauses, while the external conjunction found were about 16 clauses. Both external and internal conjunction was dominated by the causal relation. The causal relation indicated that Oprah Winfrey used a lot of reasoning because causal relations made her able to convince the audience to believe with her statements. Furthermore, causal relation made her speech seems natural, influential, and emotionally convincing to the hearer.

Abstract

The bread business has been very promising because it is delicious and filling. In addition, bread has many fans of all ages and circles. The problems faced by partners are that entrepreneurial management is not optimal, packaging is less attractive, and there are no labels on the product. The results of this service include partners who were adept at developing variants and decorating bread that suitable for selling to the wider community, being able to market online either through Facebook, Instagram, and other social networks, and having P-IRT. With this service, it is expected to increase product sales.

Abstract

Urgensi penelitian ini berfokus pada Kotbah di hari raya keagamaan Islam dengan kajian paragmatik untuk memberikan pengetahuan dan pemahaman kepada jamaah dan pembaca serta mahasiswa di dalam memaknai sebuah isi kotbah dengan pendekatan perlokusi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan dan mendeskripsikan berbagai jenis tindak tutur dan fungsinya yang terkait dalam isi kotbah tersebut. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan observasi checklist kemudian diklasifikasikan ke dalam beberapa jenis tindak tutur berdasarkan teori Yule yaitu; representatif dengan meliputi lima fungsi: Menyatakan, menginformasikan, mendeskripsikan, mengklarifikasi & menyimpulkan. Diikuti oleh ekspresif dengan tiga fungsi: memuji, berharap & meminta maaf dan direktif dengan empat fungsi: menasihati, meminta, memberitahu, berdoa dan yang terakhir komisif dengan satu fungsi: menjamin. Sampel penelitian ini adalah beberapa konten kotbah hari raya keagamaan Islam seperti: hari raya idul fitri dan hari raya idul adha yang berlangsung di tahun 2024.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on pragmatic English language teaching in universities. The scope of the study is limited to the opportunities and challenges of English language teaching. This study was carried out using a mixed method of conducting surveys and in-depth interviews. A questionnaire link using Google Forms from Spreadsheet was sent to 6 English lecturers via WhatsApp group and personal contact. The study sample consisted of 6 English lecturers from state and private universities in Central Java. Observation, questionnaire analysis, and interview transcripts show that the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has created opportunities and challenges to teaching and learning English. AI has transformed English language teaching in higher education. The findings and discussion elaborate some novelties of this study; 1) the profile of utilizing ChatGPT in pragmatics ELT teaching, portrays that ChatGPT roles in teaching scenarios play 3 major sessions, like; designing creative and innovative pragmatics teaching materials, setting up the midterm test of pragmatics project, and lastly, assessing and evaluating the pragmatics final test project. 2) The opportunities of using ChatGPT for lecturers, ChatGPT is one of the most sophisticated AI tools available today, and it can write nearly anything that an instructor wants it to. ChatGPT can help lecturers with a variety of tasks, such as creating course outlines, student progress reports, test and quiz questions, and grading rubrics; developing more inclusive and accessible learning activities; interacting with students and their families; and contributing text for websites or bulletin boards to maintain a connection between students and their families. 3) The challenges of applying ChatGPT for lecturers; ChatGPT can provide immediate responses to student questions, ChatGPT can adapt to individual student needs, ChatGPT can increase accessibility and inclusivity by providing language support for students with diverse learning needs, ChatGPT can serve as a valuable tool for language practice and strengthening, ChatGPT can encourage active learning by encouraging students to ask questions, engage in discussions, and seek clarification on challenging concepts, Integrating ChatGPT into language teaching can inspire innovative teaching approaches, such as blended learning models, flipped classrooms, and gamified learning experiences, that leverage technology to improve student learning outcomes

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types of code-switching and code-mixing produced by teachers in spoken short functional texts, the dominant type, and the factors that influence it. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data source was taken from the English teacher's speech in the classroom. The result of the study was 61 teacher utterances which included 37 utterances of code-switching (60.66%) and 24 utterances of code-mixing (39.34%). The teacher used 3 types of code-switching, namely inter-sentence code-switching, intra-sentence code-switching, and tag code-switching. Then it also uses 3 types of code-mixing, namely insertion code-mixing, alternation code-mixing, and congruent code-mixing. The dominant type of code-switching is inter-sentential code-switching 30 utterances (81.08%), and code-mixing is insertion 15 utterances (62.50%). The factor that influences the use of code-switching and code-mixing is the situation where students' ability in English is still lacking.

Abstract

In Indonesia, many students still cannot master English because they are not interested in learning English The appropriate learning strategy, which is suitable to the qualities and surroundings of the learners, is one of the factors in accomplishing English acquisition. This research aimed to know what cognitive strategy is most frequently used by the student at SMK N 4 Semarang and why them shoose that activity. This research applied a qualitative descriptive method. In collecting data, the researcher used an online survey through Gform and. SILL questions with a total number of fourteen questions related to the cognitive strategy was use to being the instrument. The subject of this research was X grade of mechanical engineering 4 at SMK N 4 Semarang which a total number of 36 male students. The data were analyzed by data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. From the SILL questions, the findings showed that watching English language TV shows spoken in English or going to movies spoken in English was the most frequently used activity by the students with a percentage of 50%. And the least used strategy was to start a conversation in English with a percentage of 8,3%. These findings suggest the teachers apply that activity to improve the English skills of the student so that the students are interested in learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students' perceptions of the Memory language learning strategy in mastering various English as a Foreign Language (EFL) language skills in SMK N 7 Semarang. A descriptive qualitative method was used with a questionnaire survey to collect data from 34 students of SMK N 7 Semarang who completed the nine items of the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire and a Background Characteristics survey. Three simultaneous actions in data analysis, according to Miles & Huberman, (1994): data reduction, data display, conclusions, and drawing/verification. The findings showed from the frequently used memory language strategy was to remember new words or phrases by remembering their location on the page on the board. The conclusions of the study's findings indicate that how English is used in practice affects how well it was learned. On the other hand, the findings showed a connection between using memory strategies and effectively learning English the most popular memory language learning strategy was remembering new words or phrases by remembering their location on the page, on the board.

Abstract

Keberhasilan proses pembelajaran dapat dilihat dari hasil belajar yang diperoleh peserta didik itu sendiri. Terdapat berbagai macam kendala dalam pelaksanaan pembelajaran yang berdampak pada rendahnya hasil belajar yang diperoleh peserta didik, salah satunya adalah pembelajaran konvensional yang dilakukan guru dengan kegiatan belajar yang hanya menggunakan media lembar kerja siswa, sehingga keterlibatan dan pemahaman peserta didik terabaikan. Penelitian ini merupakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas Kolaboratif yang dilaksanakan bersama guru pamong dalam dua siklus, ditujukan untuk mengetahui peningkatan hasil belajar peserta didik pada materi Explanation text kelas XI IPS 4 SMA Negeri 6 Semarang pada tahun ajaran 2022/2023. Yang berjumlah 36 peserta didik melalui metode pembelajaran kooperatif dengan model Teams Game Tournament berbantu video animasi. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPS 4 yang berjumlah 36 siswa, sedangkan objek penelitiannya  adalah hasil belajar pada materi Explanation text. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik observasi, pemberian tes berbentuk pilihan ganda 20 soal dan dokumentasi. Kemudian hasil penelitian tersebut dianalisis menggunakan analisis data statistik deskriptif. Hasil analisis data pada siklus I didapatkan rata-rata ketuntasan siswa secara sebesar 56%, sedangkan pada siklus II sebesar 83%. Berdasarkan penelitian tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan video animasi sebagai media pembelajaran pada materi Explanation text dengan kegiatan pembelajaran yang menggunakan model Teams Game Tournament dapat meningkatkan ketuntasan hasil belajar peserta didik kelas XI IPS 4 di SMA Negeri 6 Semarang. Maka direkomendasikan untuk meggunakan model TGT dengan berbantu video animasi pada pembelajaran materi Explanation text agar ketuntasan hasil belajar dapat diraih secara optimal.

Abstract

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK) dengan data dari produk siswa yaitu kegiatan menulis explanation texts sebelum dan sesudah menggunakan teknik Think Talk Write pada siswa kelas XI IPS2 SMA Negeri 6 Semarang. Berdasarkan hasil analisis dapat disimpulkan bahwa sebelum penggunaan teknik think talk write siswa kemampuan menulis siswa masih rendah. Pada siklus I dari data diketahui bahwa nilai rata-rata adalah 72,2. Sebanyak 12 siswa atau 33 % siswa telah mencapai kriteria ketuntasan minimal (KKM) dan 24 siswa atau 66 % siswa belum mencapai kriteria ketuntasan minimal (KKM). Pada siklus II, skor rata-rata yang diperoleh adalah 80,94. Pada siklus ini guru menerapkan teknik think talk write dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris materi explanation texts. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh sebanyak 31 siswa atau 86 % telah mencapai kriteria ketuntasan minimal (KKM) dan sebanyak 5 siswa atau 16 % belum mencapai kriteria ketuntasan minimal (KKM). Ini berarti dalam siklus II ini telah terjadi peningkatan kemampuan menulis. Pada siklus II siswa sudah mulai tertarik dengan pelajaran explanation texts. Maka, dapat disimpulkan penggunaan teknik Think Talk Write dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis explanation texts siswa. Hasil penelitian ini menjelaskan bahwa 85% siswa mengalami peningkatan dalam menulis explanation texts. Dengan demikian, penggunaan teknik think talk write membuat pembelajaran menjadi menarik, menyenangkan, dan memberi kemudahan bagi siswa untuk berkreasi dan menciptakan ide-ide yang dituangkan dalam sebuah tulisan explanation texts yang kratif.
