Abstract

This study is aimed to know how gender and sexuality are performed in weblogs belonging to Indonesian lesbians. This research is particularly purposed to identify the ideological meaning behind the performative identity of lesbian bloggers, and also to measure hir resistance against subordination. This is a multidis-ciplinary-based qualitative research using Foucault’s concepts of power relations and technology of the self (as elaborated in History of Sexuality) and Butler’s theory of performativity. This study then applies Fairclough’s analytical method of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). This research takes Fried Durian, an Indonesian lesbian weblog, as its corpus. The result of the research confirms that the identification of lesbian identity tends to be the combination of femininity and masculinity. Through the process of crisscrossing, a lesbian performs hirself by doing “stage performativity”, embedding the identification of feminine and masculine identity through hir appearance, clothing, gesture, and sexuality. Thus, a lesbian blogger is a creative producer in which zie transforms the heteronormative discourse.

Abstract

Beauty concept, as one of the central features of women’s oppression, has been standardized by the West through their global culture machine time after time. By contrasting a bold binary opposition between the West female body and the Other’s female body, the West has classified some certain features for shaping the construction of beauty concept. The binary causes the in-between feeling as described by Alaina Wong and Lois Ann Yamanaka in their short stories entitled China Doll (2001) and When Asian Eyes are Smiling (2001). The short stories show how the female characters of short stories, who are represented the Asian American women, are being colonized through some stereotypes since their body contours do not meet the standard of a beautiful body. Despite the stereotypes that embedded to the Asian American women; in fact, they are able to redefine the meaning of beauty through some cultural strategies. Thus, this study aims at knowing how Asian American women reconstruct their conceptual understanding of body and beauty which has been imposed by the West. By reshaping their body contours or even imitating the West beauty treatments, Asian American women are disrupting the essential concept of the so-called a beautiful body

Abstract

This research examines the hopelessness described in the poems by J. C. Dawn entitled Living in A Pride World, Womb, and A Soundless Tear in her book The Ripple of Existence. This research is a descriptive qualitative study that aims to describe the words used to express hopelessness. The method used to analyze the poems is the analysis of intrinsic elements in poetry with a psychological approach to find out about hopelessness experienced by the characters in each poem. Hopelessness is a condition experienced by anyone where where there is no more hope. This would also be contextualized in real life concerning the stages of someone experiencing hopelessness based on Abramson's theory. The results of the research show that the "I" character in the first poem experiences a failure in himself; in the second poem, "I" faces struggles under challenging conditions and in the third,   "she" finds herself unable to accept the reality of life.

Abstract

This study attempts to portray a female character, Enola Holmes, in Nancy Springer’s novel series entitled The Case of the Missing Marquess (2006). This research focuses on examining these research problems: 1) how is Enola Holmes characterized differently from most teenage girls at the setting of time, and 2) what spirit of feminism is illustrated by the novel through the character of Enola Holmes? The study confirms that the different portrayals are shown from Enola Holmes’ physical appearance, thought, and personality. Her masculine appearance was against the normative beauty standard for most women in the nineteenth-century tradition. Her critical and logical thought challenged the stereotypical gender role, which positioned women as less intelligent than men. Moreover, her independent and courageous personality highlighted the different traits of Enola Holmes as a young woman at that time. The characterizations reflect liberal feminism by emphasizing women’s autonomy and gender equality between men and women.
