Abstract

Abstract: The human view of nature is infinite creating an exploitative attitude like industry towards the natural world and causing chronic damage to nature. Modern humans need to learn more to live in peace with nature and the tradition of society is the entrance to peace with nature. Traditions in modern Indonesian life are somewhat dubious, tend to be interpreted as a loose past and a burden of cultural identity and uselessness. Seeing tradition is basically deeper in finding and identifying true spirits. This paper seeks to find the concept of balance between nature, humans and culture so that humans live in harmony with nature. The thought of vernacular architecture was appointed as a foothold in finding alternative solutions to natural exploitation. Vernacular architecture is expected to answer a big challenge or problem about the sustainability of the earth. This research is a qualitative research by presenting case examples analyzed descriptively using the concept of vernacular architecture as the basis of analysis. As a result, the notion of the spirit of sustainability is in vernacular architecture to protect the preservation of the culture as a whole to reduce the preservation of the earth. Thoughts in vernacular architecture can be a reference for realizing architectural works that value nature and reduce the burden and pressure on nature.

Abstract

Title: Developing Mindful Eyes of the Architecture Students Change is bound to happen in nature, be it revolutionary or evolutionary. The fundamental changes that occur throughtout all aspects would consequently have an impact on life in its entirety, and architecture education is no exception. Hence, architecture education should also continue to refine itself to anticipate the substantial issues it encounters. This first year studio is one of the concepts of change in architecture education, namely by attempting to find a different foundation wherein the emphasis of education is not in the accumulation of information but in fostering individuals to acquire sensitivity and skills for contemplating through a perspective of mutual togetherness. Mindful eyes is actually the consciousness to see, to learn through one?s eyes with awareness, which is implemented in this first year studio with the objective of learning to recognize the tools that will be used in the subsequent studios in the following years to come. This paper is the response of architecture education in confronting changes and it is currently implemented on first year architecture students. Several samples of first year student tasks are presented in a very simple manner, it is, however, aimed at preparing future architects with several essential skills.

Abstract

Title: Village Preparedness Against Landslide Disaster Disasters that have previously occurred can almost be guaranteed that they would most likely reoccur without our knowing when and where they would take place once again. Maximum preparation and understanding about what we should do during events of disaster are substantial measures that we must take. In addition, knowledge or experiences relating to disasters should also be passed down to the next generation. This study employed methods of in-depth interviews and direct observations to acquire data regarding indicators of disasters found in the village of Kebonharjo. The interviews were performed with the villagers, while observations were carried out in a number of locations where landslides had occurred. The acquired results were subsequently analyzed in order to gain an understanding of the most significant indicators that can be used as a standard for the villagers to be prepared in the event of a disaster. The availability of written knowledge and documentation pertaining to these indicators will consequently lead to such knowledge being more widely known by the community and they can also serve as a useful resource for the villagers when they find locations that are considered to show indications of disaster, in which they can then make a quick identification of the situation. Transforming oral knowledge into a written one is admittedly an appropriate choice in order to strengthen the village’s preparedness against disaster.

Abstract

Title: Exploration on Josef Prijotomo Thinking towards Nusantara Architecture (1999-2020): A History of Thought Studies   The Indonesian historical journey in which showing the traces of architectural discourse is still on its way. One of the strong discourses in forming the foundation of thinking is Nusantara Architecture. Nusantara Architecture, as suggested by Prijotomo, is an architecture in which its perspective, concepts, and theories are developed based on Mother Nature. Prijotomo has been working in the formation of this Thinking and it evolves in time. It is important to understand this journey as well as to understand Nusantara Architecture The study of the exploration of Prijotomo’s thinking about Nusantara Architecture (1999-2020) aims to identify the shift of Prijotomo’s way of thinking from Traditional Architecture to Nusantara Architecture, as well as identifying the impacts or implications of Prijotomo’s thinking in the recent era. The study uses a historical research method using documents and oral sources. The document sources used are the original ones including books and articles written by Prijotomo within 1999-2020, while the oral sources are the direct conversation with Prijotomo. Through the exploration, it can be concluded that using Nusantara Architecture thinking, Prijotomo has attempted to make the base thought of Mother Nature equal to Western Architecture (European and American). This study serves as a starter to place Nusantara Architecture as architectural knowledge that is ‘liyan (the other)’ in relation to Western Architecture (European and American). The thoughts in seeking the base foundations for architects of (in) Indonesia are still ongoing. However, the offer and even the basis initiated and proposed in a series of Prijotomo’s deep thinking struggle are crucial and relevant. Emendation and purification by Prijotomo should be used and sustained by the various Architecture stakeholders in Indonesia.

Abstract

The research explores the architectural significance of Masjid Agung Kubah Timah (MAKT) in Pangkalpinang City, Indonesia. Designed by renowned architect Ridwan Kamil, MAKT represents a modern synthesis of Islamic architecture, local culture, in contemporary design. The aim is to foster a deeper appreciation of the architectural significance of MAKT. The study employs a qualitative approach to analyze MAKT's architectural elements. This study has done exploring its unique features such as the Tudung Saji-inspired dome, arch portals, Mihrab, and decorative elements. Departing from traditional mosque norms, MAKT's distinctive dome design draws inspiration from the tudung saji, a local food cover, adding a layer of cultural symbolism. The richness of Islamic art through Islamic Architecture in MAKT is evident in the integration of calligraphy and geometric patterns on the Mihrab and decorative elements, encapsulating the depth of Islamic theology. Results reveal a harmonious fusion of Islamic Architecture and Pangkalpinang's cultural identity in the mosque's design. MAKT stands as an iconic building, embodying a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, contributing to the architectural diversity and cultural richness of Pangkalpinang.
