Abstract

The multicultural approach plays a vital role in learning religious education in order to recognize the diversity that exists, especially in conflict-prone zone schools. This study aims to describe a multicultural approach in learning religious education in conflict-prone zones. Through exercising Garfinkel’s ethnomethodology analysis, this qualitative research was conducted at SMAN 2 Pasaman and SMAN 1 Luhak Nan Duo senior high schools within conflict-prone zones of West Pasaman, West Sumatra. The dynamics of school philosophy towards inclusive multicultural approaches in religious education for schools in conflict-prone zones indicated that academic culture within said schools must be capable of creating a more harmonious atmosphere among ethnic diversities, mainly that of Javanese, Minangkabaunese, and Bataknese. The application of multicultural approaches in religious education for such schools in conflict-prone zones showed that the planning, implementation, and evaluation of religious education must be carried out while simultaneously considering the diversity of these ethnicities. The employment of an inclusive multicultural approach in association with schools in conflict-prone zones showed that the school’s physical environment is strategic for the interaction of various ethnicities, such as with Javanese, Minang, and Batak ethnicities at SMAN 2 Pasaman and SMAN 1 Luhak Nan Duo. This research is useful as input in making and improving policies by schools and the government regarding the implementation of religious education with a multicultural approach in conflict-prone zone schools.

Abstract

When one learns a certain language, he/she should also learn its culture. This is because languages and cultures are integrated.  For example, to acquire meanings, language students need to understand the culture of the language they are learning. This study seeks to determine the challenges faced by English language learners in understanding Islamic beliefs and western cultures. This was a descriptive qualitative study that utilized semi-structured interviews to acquire data. Interviews were conducted with eight pupils from the Islamic boarding school Ar-Risalah in West Sumatra. The result of interviews showed that the majority of learners acknowledged that they experienced cross-cultural hurdles in English learning because of being culturally insensitive, misunderstanding of cultural contents in the language materials, and formal intervention regarding the textbook. Students are confused to differentiate cultures shared by Islamic values and Western cultures as those Islamic values are not vividly depicted in English textbooks. Therefore, students have difficulties understanding English. It is imperative that future research investigate this topic, since culture and language are inseparable, in which people learning a certain language are also required to learn its culture.

Abstract

The Quran is the holy book of Muslims which has a central role in human spiritual and moral life. Memorizing the Quran is a form of noble practice recommended by the Prophet Muhammad. Various methods have been developed to help the process of memorizing the Quran, one that has been proven effective for centuries is the Talqin method. This research aims to examine the implementation of the Talqin method in memorizing the Koran. The research method used is Systematic Literature Review (SLR) by analyzing 30 reputable journals published over the last five years (2019-2024). Data sources were obtained from scientific databases such as Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Scopus and DOAJ. The findings show that the Talqin method has proven effective in helping students memorize the Quran quickly and accurately. This method has also been proven to increase students' understanding of the meaning of the Koran and build strong relationships between teachers and students. This can be seen in the factors that support the successful implementation of the Talqin method such as; teacher skills, student motivation, conducive learning environment. However, there are several challenges that need to be considered in its implementation, such as the time required, teacher availability, facilities and infrastructure. It is hoped that this research can provide a valuable contribution to the development of Islamic education practices and tahfidz of the Quran, so that it can produce a generation of Qur'anists who have noble character and love the Quran.
