Abstract

The increasing cases of terrorism and extremism unite practitioners and theoreticians to put serious attention to the role of education for peacebuilding. However, finding an appropriate strategy connecting literature education to peacebuilding is challenging. Thus, the study explored the effectiveness of engaging suitable literary works to be used at schools to convey a peaceful message through To Kill a Mockingbird (TKAM) and The Kite Runner (TKR). The study was conducted in 4 classes of Literary Work Analysis course of IAIN Syekh Nurjati students in the second semester of 2018/2019 by applying Wahyudin’s (2018) five factors of peace education implementation in the classrooms. The study aimed to 1) investigate how to integrate peace education into the literature class and 2) elucidate the students' perception of peace education in the integrated literature class. It was found that applying peace education should consider 1) objectives, 2) subject contents, 3) methods and strategies, 4) media, and 5) learning evaluation. Students also perceived and learned about peace education by addressing some related issues in their papers and a survey.

Abstract

As one of the oldest genres, travel writing genre has evolved in many shapes and formats. Technology plays a great role in creating another subgenre with some differences from the printed formats. The generic features of travel writing on the internet are relatively simple in using words, only putting the key information of the described places and events, and most of the judgments are subjective evaluation. Yet, online articles provide more room for pictures that give benefits to the authors (to express their judgments), the readers (to create the image of the descriptive texts), as well as to the website traffics (for image is another tool to inquire and attract internet users). The technology also heavily influences the usage of further links and the second person pronoun “you.”

Abstract

Every popular literature has a particular formula for certain intrinsic elements such as favorite plots, stereotyped characters, and accepted ideas. Therefore, the genre is widely accepted by readers. It represents familiar shared images and meanings that assert an ongoing continuity of values. Therefore, this study aims: (1) to elucidate the kind of melodrama formula used that makes a novel popular and widely accepted, and dramatizes moral value shared by its readers, and (2) to make justification on the cultural behavior or universal pattern that may underline its popularity. The object of the study is The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Descriptive analysis is used to explore the data with the Concept of Formula by Cawelti that serves as the theory. Based on the data analysis, the conclusions draw as follows. First, conventions and inventions of the social melodrama genre are used to dramatize sexuality in which it’s identified through the theme. Second, this shared moral value turns from traditional religious into the secular humanist world. However, this change remains to defense a monogamous life and family-oriented relationship.

Abstract

The concept of individuality's sense of self may trigger some conflicts in an ex-colonized country. The British colonized Nigeria for sixty years, and the colonization formally ended after Nigeria declared its independence on the first of October, 1960. A new Nigerian dictatorial government performs hegemony as the remnant of colonization. This phenomenon is represented in Purple Hibiscus, which is based on the military dictatorship in Nigeria between 1980 and 1999. This study aims to find the forms of hegemony and its negative impacts on the dislocation of identity. The research method is qualitative. The data is analyzed by Gramsci's hegemony and is supported by the concept of diaspora in postcolonialism. The data is obtained based on the dominant and subordinate conflicts. Purple Hibiscus presents three forms of hegemony: restricted media, religion, and the English language. The novel shows the negative impacts of hegemony: isolation, no individual choices, oppression, and dislocation of identity. The process of identity dislocation is portrayed through emotional attachment and the realization of life-changing seen through the acceptance and interaction with American people with different backgrounds, diverse cultures, and distinct environments.

Abstract

Identity is strongly related to one’s culture. When a person is in an estranged culture, he/she may find it difficult to adapt. This research aims to explain the main character Mathilde's struggle with cultural differences in Morocco and how she negotiates with cultural identity. The research is a literary criticism since the object of the research is a novel entitled The Country of Others written by a Moroccan novelist, Leila Sliman. This research views the literary text using the perspective of cultural identity theory by Stuart Hall. The findings show that there were cultural differences, norms, and stereotypes between Mathilde and Moroccan people, making her shocked by this situation. This causes rejection or denial and confusion of her cultural identity. The situation made her perceive herself as ‘other’ due to the difficulties she faced in accepting the new culture. Even though she initially had difficulties adapting to the new environment, in the end, Mathilde negotiated differences in cultural identity by harmonizing her new and old cultures in her new life in Morocco. It is hoped that in the future, this research can become a reference for research which uses other literary theories or studies on the same novel from different perspectives.

Abstract

Adapting a novel into a movie combines creative art and technical challenges. The film director is required to make the novel story that is lifted to the big screen have uniqueness from creative ideas with limited film duration, various creative interpretations, and commercial interests. The process will result in two-story forms: maintaining the novel's authenticity or changing specific components. Therefore, this research compares Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes novel, published in 2006, and Harry Bradbeer's film adaptation, released in 2020. This comparison is carried out to find the fidelity or infidelity of using the detective story formula in the Enola Holmes film related to the director's creativity and the technical challenges in the adaptation process. Using the descriptive qualitative method and Cawelti's detective story formula theory, the result of data analysis shows that Enola Holmes' novel is classified into the classic detective story formula. At the same time, the movie adaptation is categorized into the hard-boiled detective story formula. This theory is applied through the differences between the focus of the story, the setting, and the role of women. These differences lead to infidelity in using detective formulas that aim to develop and clarify the storyline and make some things more realistic when the novel's story is adapted into a movie that refers to commercial interests and audience satisfaction.

Abstract

This study investigated the significance of discussing a literary work written by an Indigenous American author to students general understanding of the socio-cultural, economic, and political issues of the Indigenous communities (ICs) in Indonesia. A total of 153 students who enrolled in the Prose Class at the English Literature Study Program at Universitas Negeri Semarang participated in the study. This study adopted a pedagogical application model consisting of pre-reading activities, general comprehension, and connecting literary text with social context. The treatment was part of an attempt to incorporate local ICs content in the learning process and make it mainstream. This research employed a mixed method, and the participants completed the pre and post-tests as the quantitative data. In addition, an open-ended questionnaire and observation were used to collect the qualitative data. We employed Freires critical pedagogy to descriptively analyze the treatment process and results. The findings revealed that the treatment improved the students understanding of the issues faced by the ICs in Indonesia. They could comment critically on the issues during the discussion activity and fill in the knowledge gaps in the pre-test result. This study also suggested the integration and discussion of the ICs local values and issues into the education materials and texts to develop students critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Postcolonial literary studies aim to explore the impact of colonization, especially in the context of individual identity. The colonized identity is closely related to the culture of the colonizer who controls the territory. In the phenomenon of colonization, cultural clashes between colonizers and colonized are inevitable, which over time will undergo a process of assimilation referred to as a cultural hybrid in the postcolonial studies. The representation of cultural mixing consciously or unconsciously permeates the culture and life of society. This study explores the impact of cultural mixing on Zainichi's individual identity in the novel Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. Using a descriptive qualitative postcolonial approach, utilizing Homi K. Bhabha's hybridity theory and Stuart Hall's cultural identity to reveal the impact of cultural mixing on Zainichi's individual identity in each generation. This research finds that the realization of cultural assimilation goes through a very long stage. As experienced by several Zainichi characters from different generations, the process of achieving cultural assimilation has an impact on their identity and nationality. In addition, this research also provides an understanding that the development of Zainichi's search for identity is heading in a more stable direction.
