This research is a qualitative descriptive literature research using a questionnaire distributed to readers who are used as respondents. Respondents were selected randomly with the aim of knowing the differences in opinion of each respondent in responding to a literary work. The conclusion of this study is that the various opinions obtained are influenced by the diversity of backgrounds of the respondents such as differences in gender, age, level of education and experience. In addition, there are messages obtained by readers through the lyrics, namely; freedom of speech, feminism, inner beauty, and sex education.

Abstract

Translation is a process of transfering the meaning from the source text into the target text reader. The translator competencies in source language and target language are needed in order to reproduce the closest equivalence in target text.  This study aimed to determine interference in students’ Indonesian-English translation result. The study raised the question: How Indonesian, as the students’ first language,  interferenced their translation in  English when translating texts from Indonesian into English? To answer the question, the researchers analyzed students' mistakes in their Indonesian-English translation products. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method.  The data source was 18 documents of students’ Indonesian–English translation results. The finding showed that the problems arised from interference was the diference of syntactical construction of Indonesian and English. The results showed that interference occurred because of students' lack of knowledge and awareness of the source and target languages.

Abstract

Exploration of local adaptations of Shakespeare's plays around the world has been one of the most prolific disciplines of Shakespeare studies in the last two decades. The local appropriation of Shakespeare’s  Hamlet has led to challenging the Indonesian translators to reproduce the masterpiece work of William Shakespeare for the local reader.   Hamlet has several translated versions in Indonesia, from the early translation by Trisno Sumarjo (1950), Santiko Budi (2009), and then more contemporary translation by Fatimah, Ifa Nabila and Ratna Ofvilia (2018). This article looks at translations and rewriting of Hamlet in Indonesia. It explores how the rewriting process happens and the functions that Hamlet has served for the Indonesian reader: a rite of passage and an educational tool of literary works for students. It is also elaborate concept of Susan Bassnett and André Lefevere’s ideas about translation and rewriting at work. how the translators react to the ideas and references of the source cultures’ myths and belief systems and rewrite them to fit the target reader

Abstract

This study aims to examine how translation techniques influence the rendering of ironic expressions in Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. While research on irony translation is growing, there is a lack of empirical evidence linking specific techniques to quality outcomes in non-fiction literature, representing a significant gap in current translation studies. Using a qualitative approach, this research identifies patterns of irony classification (Muecke, 1982), translation techniques (Molina & Albir, 2002), and quality assessment (Nababan et al., 2012) through content analysis and Focus Group Discussions. Findings reveal that while situational and verbal irony dominate the text, the effectiveness of translation techniques varies significantly; established equivalents, modulation, and transposition emerge as the most reliable techniques for maintaining high accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Conversely, techniques involving semantic shifts—such as amplification, adaptation, reduction, and discursive creation—often compromise the contradictory nuances essential to irony. By providing a systematic evaluation of these techniques, this study offers critical pedagogical implications for translator training and EFL instruction, emphasizing the necessity of linguistic and cultural competence in rendering irony.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Masculinity is commonly associated with men, which leads children’s stories to reinforce narrow gender stereotypes. As these stories are translated and circulated across cultures, translation choices may either maintain or reshape such representations. However, the translation of female masculinity in children’s stories remains underexplored, particularly through transitivity perspective. This study examines StoryWeaver translations portraying female masculinity to analyze how masculinity is identified using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), how it is translated, and how translation techniques affect its representation. Methodology: This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with five purposively selected StoryWeaver stories. Credibility was ensured through data source triangulation via document analysis and methodological triangulation through focus group discussion (FGD). SFL was used to identify constructions of masculinity, while translation techniques analysis examined how masculinity was translated from the source to the target language. A double case study design treated the five stories as individual cases for cross-case comparison across different authors and translators. Data were analysed using Spradley’s ethnographic procedures. Findings: Five forms of masculinity were identified, realized through material, mental, relational, behavioral, and existential processes, revealing how female masculinity is linguistically constructed in children’s narratives. Established equivalents dominated the translations, while deletion also influenced the representation of masculinity. Conclusion: Translation techniques play a role in shaping how female masculinity is represented, with established equivalents tending to maintain meaning and deletion leading to shifts in representation. Originality: The study addresses the limited research on translating female masculinity in children’s literature and shows how translation choices shape gender meanings for young readers across languages and cultures.

Abstract

Indonesian migrant children in Malaysia face educational and identity-related challenges because some of them have limited access to formal schooling and grow up in multilingual environments that may reduce their exposure to Indonesian language and culture. This community service program aimed to strengthen Indonesian language and cultural literacy among Indonesian children at the Segambut Learning Center, Kuala Lumpur. The program was conducted through a participatory educational approach involving coordination with learning center administrators, preparation of Indonesian folklore-based learning materials, interactive storytelling, guided reading, role play, traditional songs, and reflective evaluation. The target participants were 45 Indonesian children aged 5 to 11 years. Data were collected through observation, short oral questions, retelling activities, and feedback from the learning center. The results indicate that folklore-based activities created an engaging literacy space, encouraged children to listen, respond, retell stories, and use Indonesian expressions in meaningful contexts. The activities also introduced cultural values through stories such as Maling Kundang, Roro Jonggrang, and Cindelaras. This program shows that culturally responsive storytelling can serve as an accessible strategy to support heritage language maintenance, cultural awareness, and national identity formation among Indonesian migrant children. Continued mentoring and structured reading materials are recommended to sustain the impact of the program.
