Abstract

This research analyses the meaning realized on online news texts about ‘France under attack’ taken from The Jakarta Post, The Spectator, and Najam TV National. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data were taken from the three news texts by classifying the clauses that related to the appraisal and then analyzing based on the subsystems of appraisal. The results showed that the news authors used three subsystems of appraisal included attitude, engagement, and graduation. In attitude, there were found the use of affect, judgement, and appreciation. There were also found of engagement consisted of monogloss and hetergloss. Further, the news items authors also applied graduation to make news more seems accurate.

Abstract

The aim of the implementation Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in learning process is to change the teacher-centered learning process into student-centered learning, where students have the freedom to move and discuss all available materials. The method is given to students in grades three to six at SDN Jambangan during the Kampus Mengajar program. The CLT method is divided into four, namely the Communicative English teaching method, the practice question method, the question and Answer Session method, the guessing game method. Further, when learning is carried out, it was designed to make communicative activities such as games so that students don't feel bored. This learning process can provide opportunities for students to improve their language skills by using communicative English teaching methods. The findings showed that it is very helpful for educators to provide what is the right method to help students in dealing with existing problems and make learning fun. The students were active during the teaching and learning process. They did the teacher’s instruction cooperatively. Therefore, it can be concluded that learning can be carried out well and feels light when using the right stages. This research also helps the researcher to gain new experiences, which are very valuable experiences for life.

Abstract

This research aims to determine students' challenges in learning public speaking. This research method is descriptive quantitative. The subjects of this research are 5 male and 15 female students from University of Muhammadiyah Semarang in Kedung Mundu. The data collection technique uses questionnaires and interviews by giving a series of written and verbal questions or statements to respondents to then answer. The results show that there is easy learning when using Manuscript and Comunication in learning English. By applying the Manuscript method in learning public speaking, it shows an increase in self-confidence. Meanwhile, conversation can improve English pronunciation skills, habits, and increase English vocabulary which previously was one of the biggest challenges for students. Their tendency was to more easily improve Public Speaking by using the Manuscript model.

Abstract

This Community Service Program aims to develop a character-based thematic English module and assessment to enhance the quality of English learning at SD Al Hikmah Semarang. The subjects involved in this program include English teachers and Grade 6 students who participated in the implementation and evaluation stages. The program employed several steps: needs analysis, module and assessment design, expert validation, revision, and limited classroom implementation. Qualitative data were collected through observations, interviews, and field notes. The results indicate that the developed thematic module is contextually relevant, engaging for students, and effective in supporting more communicative and meaningful English learning. The character-based assessment also enables teachers to monitor students’ behavioral development and language skills more systematically. Overall, this program concludes that the character-based thematic module and assessment are feasible to be used as supporting learning materials in primary school English education.

Abstract

Latar belakang: Keterbatasan media pembelajaran, rendahnya kepercayaan diri santri dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris, serta minimnya pemanfaatan perangkat mobile sebagai sarana belajar merupakan latar belakang dilakukannya kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini. Padahal hampir seluruh santri telah memiliki smartphone yang berpotensi besar menjadi alat pembelajaran yang fleksibel, menarik, dan sesuai dengan gaya belajar generasi digital. Tujuan: Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberdayakan santri Pondok Pesantren Darun Najah Semarang melalui pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris berbasis Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL). Metode: Melalui rangkaian kegiatan pelatihan kosakata, pelatihan berbicara, praktik interaktif menggunakan aplikasi Wordwall, Duolingo, Padlet, Google Docs, dan Bamboozle, serta pendampingan intensif selama empat sesi, program ini mendorong terciptanya pengalaman belajar yang lebih komunikatif dan bermakna. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui pre dan post-test, observasi, dan angket kepuasan mitra. Hasil: Hasil analisis menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan dalam penguasaan kosakata dan pemahaman struktur Bahasa Inggris. Rata-rata nilai pre-test santri meningkat dari 63,69 menjadi 85,38 pada post-test, dengan peningkatan kompetensi sebesar 34,05%. Dari aspek afektif, 90% santri menyatakan pembelajaran berbasis aplikasi lebih menyenangkan dan membantu meningkatkan kepercayaan diri mereka dalam berbicara. Mitra juga menunjukkan kepuasan tinggi (skor 4,6 dari 5), terutama pada aspek kebermanfaatan program dan keberlanjutan. Kesimpulan: Secara keseluruhan, program ini berhasil menjembatani dunia pesantren dan era digital melalui pemanfaatan teknologi mobile yang humanis, inklusif, dan adaptif. Pembelajaran berbasis MALL terbukti efektif meningkatkan kompetensi bahasa, motivasi, dan kemandirian belajar santri dalam konteks pesantren. Program ini diharapkan dapat menjadi model pembelajaran berkelanjutan di lingkungan pendidikan berbasis keagamaan. _____________________________________________________________________ Abstract Background: Limited learning media, low student confidence in using English, and minimal use of mobile devices as learning tools are the background to this community service activity. Even though almost all students have smartphones that have great potential to be flexible, interesting learning tools, and in accordance with the learning styles of the digital generation. Objective: This Community Service Program aims to empower students at the Darun Najah Islamic Boarding School in Semarang through Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL)-based English learning. Method: Through a series of vocabulary training activities, speaking training, interactive practice using the Wordwall, Duolingo, Padlet, Google Docs, and Bamboozle applications, as well as intensive mentoring for four sessions, this program encourages the creation of a more communicative and meaningful learning experience. Evaluation was carried out through pre-posttests, observations, and partner satisfaction questionnaires. Result: The analysis results showed a significant increase in vocabulary mastery and understanding of English structures. The average student pre-test score increased from 63.69 to 85.38 in the post-test, with an increase in competence of 34.05%. From an affective perspective, 90% of students stated that app-based learning was more enjoyable and helped improve their speaking confidence. Partners also showed high satisfaction (score 4.6 out of 5), especially regarding the program's usefulness and sustainability. Conclusion: Overall, this program successfully bridges the world of Islamic boarding schools and the digital era through the use of humanistic, inclusive, and adaptive mobile technology. MALL based learning has proven effective in improving students' language competency, motivation, and learning independence in the Islamic boarding school context. This program is expected to become a model for sustainable learning in religious-based educational environments.
