Abstract

As Indonesia's original cultural heritage, Hand-Written Batik is one of the featured products for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Central Java. However, the printed batik industry's presence impacted the decline in the market share of hand-written batik. The entrepreneurial climate and entrepreneurial competence are factors that are believed to increase the competitiveness of hand-written batik. This study aims to determine and explain the effect of entrepreneurial climate on business performance with entrepreneurial competence as an intervening variable. This research is explanatory research with a quantitative approach and involves as many as 138 MSMES owners at the center of Hand-Written Batik in Bayat District, Klaten Regency as respondents. Withdrawal of samples using the Slovin formula with a confidence level of 95 percent. The sampling technique uses proportional random sampling, and data collection is done by distributing questionnaires to respondents. Data analysis using descriptive analysis and path analysis were processed using SPSS software. The results show that the entrepreneurial climate has a positive and significant influence on entrepreneurial competence, the entrepreneurial climate has a positive and significant effect on business performance, entrepreneurial competence has a positive and significant effect on business performance, and entrepreneurial competence is proven to be able to mediate the relationship between entrepreneurial climate and business performance. This means that the better the entrepreneurial climate in an MSMEs industrial center will impact MSMEs' performance if, at the same time, MSMEs owners have good entrepreneurial competence. Keywords: business performance, entrepreneurial climate, entrepreneurial competence, MSMEs

Abstract

The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSMEs) sector has been recognized as an essential contributor to the economic development of Indonesia. However, the sustainability of MSMEs in Indonesia is still relatively low compared to the rest of ASEAN countries with similar levels of economic growth. This study aims to extend previous studies on the relationship between MSMEs characteristics and their sustainability by specifically including financial literation as a mediation role. This study used proportional random sampling as a sampling technique. A total of 191 MSMEs owner-managers questionnaire data were processed by using Partial Least Square analysis. This study confirmed the positive influence of MSMEs characteristics on financial literacy and financial literacy on the sustainability of MSMEs. Moreover, financial literation proves to be a significant mediator of MSMEs sustainability. This study suggests that MSMEs owner-managers need to be financially literate as it can enable them to make a good financial decision that can ensure their business sustainability.

Abstract

The new normal era during the COVID-19 pandemic has presented opportunities and challenges for SMEs. This study aimed to determine the effects of absorptive capacity and innovation capability on business performance. The research involved 189 creative SMEs owners in Malang City. The sampling technique uses proportional random sampling. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires to respondents. The data analysis used partial least squares using high-order construction. The results showed that absorptive capacity significantly affects business performance, and absorptive capacity significantly affects innovation capability. However, innovation capability had no significant effect on business performance. Innovation capability has also not been proven to influence Absorptive Capacity and Business Performance indirectly. The practical implication is that SMEs owners should develop the absorptive capacity to reach, assimilate, and acquire new knowledge to achieve better SMEs performance. Simultaneously, innovation capability does not automatically improve SMEs' performance. SMEs need extra effort to produce innovations that are rare, unique, and difficult to imitate to survive the new normal era. Kata Kunci : absorptive capacity, innovation capability, business performance, SMEs, new normal.
