Abstract

The emergence of Communication Science in Indonesia was related to the history of this science in Europe and America. The term “communication science” (America’s tradition) was noted to have replaced “Publisistic” (German’s tradition). M. Alwi Dahlan is an important figure behind that. Communication Science then has been developing, but still dominated by applied studies. Whereas to be a discipline, the study of history and philosophy of science shouldn’t be ignored. Furthermore, the development of a science indicates the contribution of it’s intellctuals. Here is the importance of studying Dahlan’s thoughts on communication. The researcher applied a Gadamerian perspective hermeneutic to interpret Dahlan’s writings between 1980-1990s. Based on metanarrative awareness and the spirit of non-Western perspective studies, the researcher has explored them through hermeneutic circle until getting creative meanings (Bildung). The conclusion is that Dahlan’s contribution is contextualizing or bringing Communication Science ‘down to earth’ in Indonesia especially related to development, environment, information-technology, through an eclectic perspective and by which human being as a key resource. Dahlan’s ideas has significance in the development of history and philosophy of Communication Science. Finally, this research suggest further exploration both on Dahlan and related topics. Key Words: M. Alwi Dahlan, Hermeneutics, Gadamerian Perspective, Ilmu Komunikasi

Abstract

This study examines the Tandem campaign's impact in a general election as a strategy, supported by the party, and political patronage in Indonesia. Tandem is a campaign for more than one candidate. The investigation finds that tandem not only has the parallel model in numbering tandem with candidates from the People‘s Representatives Council (DPR) and the Regional People’s Representatives Council (DPRD), but the zigzag model also applies because of agreement from candidates. This pattern is supported by the political party, so the parliamentary threshold can be achieved, accounting for 4 % in DPR and 15 % in DPRD. During Regional Leaders Election (Pilkada), a political party can promote its candidate for a regional leader without paying another candidate from another party. Tandem can grow political patronage, and the candidates for DPR can be patrons of the DPRD candidates. This is because DPR members have many resources while candidates for DPRD as clients understand no further than the condition in their electoral district and social-political behavior, or they can even serve as broker-vote buyers. We hypothesize that this is a part of finding a solution to political costs in general elections.

Abstract

The fundamental value of democracy is civil liberties to express an opinion, assembly, and organization. Data from various institutions observing Indonesian democracy show that since Jokowi's leadership, Indonesia has had problems with civil liberties, from previously free to partly free, thus falling into the flawed category of democracy. The decline in civil liberties was triggered by the Jokowi administration's repressive political communications manifested in the form of repressive legal products. These repressive legal products are used to suppress critical opposition groups who are at odds with the Jokowi administration. This study uses a critical paradigm based on qualitative methods that utilize the theory of Political Discourse Analysis (PDA). The research objective is to reveal the various repressive legal products of the Jokowi administration as well as to explain the context, history, power, and ideology behind the production of these repressive laws. The object of study related to repressive legal products is limited to online news published by media verified by the Press Council. The results of the study concluded that the Jokowi administration presented repressive legal products to perpetuate power and smooth the implementation of capitalist neoliberal ideology.

Abstract

The existence of new media makes humans have control over the media they consume only through a smartphone on their hands. GoJek contributes new dynamics because the use of new media in the form of an application has changed most of the life patterns of media behavior. In the context of new media, media behavior is inseparable from the concept of political economy communication. This research uses a qualitative approach by extracting information from users, merchants, and drivers on GoFood service features taken by purposive sampling. The collected data from the result of observations, interviews, and documentation will be associated and analyzed using the political economy communication concept of Vincent Mosco, especially the commodification. Researchers found that the aspects of the commodification of content, commodification of audience, and commodification of labor of GoFood service features resulted in changes in society in adapting internet technology which also affected the welfare of the Indonesian economy. Keywords: GoFood, commodification, political economy of communication, and new media

Abstract

This study is manifestation of a non-Western perspective communication research. The dominance of western perspective in communication studies encourages the development of contextual non-Western communication with the source from historical and socio-cultural as a grounded alternative perspective. This study is aims to read the era by examining the historical traces of Prince Diponegoro and post-truth practices that occurred during the Javanese classical propaganda era around the late 18th century and early 19th century. This study uses historiography method through literature review of historical texts related to Prince Diponegoro and social history at that time. The results of this study reveal the fields of production of reality that are influenced by the colonial culture and the practice of de-islamization that separates the local wisdom of the Palace and tradition of the Javanese society. The intersection of Prince Diponegoro’s resistance to the amoral values implies the creation of a negative construction of Prince Diponegoro as a rebel figure who only wants to gain power in the land of Java. The clarity of reading historical reality is important in order to avoid a factual twist as a whole of civilization.
